I've had no problems with heat in mine. Just be aware the little bugger can be pretty noisy when the fan does kick in. But I've played RIFT for a few hours straight with no issues. It gets a bit warm but no more than you should expect. Just don't block the vent and I'd recommend a notebook cooler if you want to do any lap gaming. The one I use with mine (notepal U1) works great because it is small and has a movable fan that you can position where the nameplate is, which seems to be the area that gets the warmest.

Doesn't get as hot as my R1 does, and Rockwell is right, actually stays relatively cool given the fact of what it's doing.

The m11x is an incredible little machine, with almost no flaws in my opinion. A few things could be nitpicked, but all up a very fantastic unit. You won't regret getting one!

R1 is the coolest of the cool. But some people are have heat problems. Dell usually comes out and replaces the motherboard and heatsinks for this problem. But the problem is due to poor thermal pasting. When you get your laptop, open it up and repaste it... usually takes between 1-2 hours to complete.

Others like me have added modded heat sinks to the factory heatsink to make it better. Mine runs so cool while gaming that the fan rarely even turns on.

Alienware laptops are meant and designed for gaming, you can rest assured that the cooling is good on the laptops. The main overheating cause resides in dust in the vents/poor thermal paste. As long as you clean your laptop, and monitor the temps especially if you OC you’ll be fine.

You don’t even really need to invest in a laptop cooler, raise the corners of the M11x and it does the job- that extra gap provides wonders for the machine.

Oddly enough, mine runs cooler when its flat on the table than it does when lifted.

I repasted mine, and if it sits on a flat surface it will shutdown due to overheat within an hour when running a graphics-intensive game or 1080P movie.

I might try redoing the paste again, but since I have to remove everything to get to the cpu and gpu it isn't worth the hassle right now. I just put a book under it to prop the back up to ensure adequate airflow.

My experience is that it runs cool. When I ordered my m11x r3 months ago it was postponed because of "updated parts awaiting arrival". I wished they told me what parts were being updated.

I got it weeks ago and been using it for gaming every night for many hours at a time and until last night thought the fan had 2 speeds. It was either low when I was doing simple stuff, or when gaming it would be what I thought was high. I didn't realize until last night the fan has 3 speeds as I had fallen asleep while gaming and covered it in blankets and when I woke up the fan was faster than I've ever heard it.

Maybe the "updated parts" was new paste. My experience is when gaming my fan typically runs at medium speed, so mine is staying cool.
