Shutting down will save more battery. Your laptop is still "on" (in a low power state) when it is in Sleep mode. Hence it is still discharging.

I always put mine on Hibernate. It's saves your session but turns off your laptop.

yes, all hibernate does is move all the data from RAM onto your HDD.

i personally like hibernation. starts up faster than a cold boot and uses no power. its really the best way to go unless many times a day you need your laptop on in short periods of time apart from each other. then sleep may be best for you. as you barely have to wait for the system to respond before its usable.

I would use hibernate as well. Fastest boot time, near the same battery life as shut down (requires slightly more as you have to write everything to the HDD). Thats what I use when out and about using the m11x for work and normal stuff. I do usually restart if I want to game though, but that is unnecessary.

To add something about sleep vs. shut down (I think hibernate has been covered nicely above), it depends how often you will be waking the computer up while on battery (whether it be from power-down or sleep). Sleep uses some power while asleep, whereas almost none is used while shut down. However, booting from a shutdown is fairly power intensive, so keep that in mind.
