What kind of difference will you notice going with the Momentus XT from a standard 7200 HDD? My boots times are almost 2 minutes and it kind of pisses me off..

While I havent used a Momentus XT going from a regular HD to SSD is like night and day so would definately recommend going SSD. There's really no going back once you start using them. It's that much of a difference.

I disagree with people who write "Go for a SSD 100% sure!", and I will tell you why:

The choice SSD or Hybrid HDD it really depends on the use of you M11X, for example, if you plan on using p2p to download (many Linux copies, of course), it would ruin your SSD (you can even have data corruption, I've been there).

I am planning to order a new 15" laptop, and there will be only one hard drive slot, so I am definitely going for the Momentus XT 500GB, because I don't want to have an USB drive connected all the time.

SSDs sure are way faster, but they don't suit to every use.

An SSD gives you absolutely unparalleled performance you cannot find anywhere else. If your top priority is performance, get an SSD. In exchange for that performance, you sacrifice affordability (higher $/GB), and storage capacity (largest realistic SSD is 240GB). SSD's are extremely popular among forum members who want performance, and are willing to pay for it.

A Seagate Momentus XT is a nice balance between performance, price, and capacity. It is also a very popular drive among forum members, because of those reasons.

If you *DO* care about performance, then an SSD is untouchable. In areas that actually matter to your computer's overall performance, like Random 4KB reads (sequential read/write is irrelevant) and I/O's per second, an SSD absolutely smokes mechanical HDD's or the Seagate Momentus XT. Take a look at this graph from Anandtech's review of the Seagate Momentus XT:

You can see that an SSD is literally 100x faster than mechanical / hybrid HDD's. Random 4KB reads go from 0.5MBps --> 40+MBps. I/O's per second (IOPS), which determines how well your storage device handles multitasking scenarios, goes from 500 --> 40,000. It is like going from a 56Kbps dial-up modem to a 5.6MBps broadband connection.

If you want another example, here is a video that I've been pimping for a while. I boot Windows 7 + load all 27 applications on my work laptop in about 1 minute (including POST time). You'll never get that level of performance with a mechanical / hybrid HDD.
YouTube - Why I love my SSD - Windows 7 boot + loading 27 applications in about 1 minute.

If you do decide to buy an SSD, and need one immediately, get a non-OCZ branded drive based off of the SandForce SF-1200 controller (G.Skill Phoenix or Corsair F120). If you can afford to wait a month or so, you'll start seeing a bunch of SATA-3 drives based off of the SandForce SF-2000 controller. Even though you may not have SATA-3 in your laptop, it would be worth buying a SATA-3 drive so that you can carry it over to your next laptop that does have SATA-3. Again, don't buy OCZ, because they are currently porking their customers in the rear in unholy ways.

I would say SSD hands down if the M11x had USB 3.0 or eSATA ports to alleviate internal storage concerns. As it is, "reasonably priced" SSD's have limited internal capacity, and I don't know about you, but I grow frustrated with external USB 2.0 hard drive transfer speeds.

The Momentus XT seems to be a good balance between high capacity and boot up speed over SSD's & traditional HDD's - it's almost the best of both worlds.

For any other laptop that has 2+ internal HDD options or has USB3.0/eSATA ports, I'd suggest SSD's. For the M11x, I picked the SMXT.

Never used a SSD, but hear their MUCH faster. But their size/Gigabytes is limited. This is a Win-Loss situation. Less space but faster vs. more space but slower. I obviously needed the 500GB MomentusXT. Because I install a lot of junk.

Also, you do know that SSDes are huge USB flash drives? No wonder.

I've used both. I would say spring for the SSD if you can afford it. The Momentus XT offers quick boot and decent windows response, but it can't compare with a full blown SSD. I'd recommend Intel 160GB, Samsung 470 256GB, or Corsair C300 240GB. OCZ is too squirrely at the moment.

i'd go with SSD but i am aiming for a smaller capacity of 160gb. now if i get my tax return and it's of a good amount then i might get a 240gb SSD.

so momentus XT is fast HDD right? :D
I always misunderstand it as a SSD @@
So if I switch from normal HDD to SSD I will lose recovery partition and I cannot have those original Alienware contents?
