Incredible, good job Table +rep. As we thought all along it seems that the 7970m makes a mockery of last decade fermi cards, scorching them by unprecedented numbers and being cheaper too boot... Finally mobile cards can be on par with the top tier desktop cards like the 7870 and the 570, and crossfired they can even surpass the 7970 and 680. It seems that once again Amd has already won the battle before it began, and Nvidia will have to desperately throw out a 680m in another half a year. Ofcourse it seems unlikely that it will be in the same realm as the 7970m, and will likely throttle and exceed 100tdp as per the norm, not too mention being atleast double the price, but alas thats what they need to do to compete and mitigate those nearly $1 Billion quarterly losses that they are experiencing..

Glad all us believers were proven right, and that day of monumental performance increases at incredible prices has finally come upon us. Now even the most stubborn and blind fanboys will have a hard time concocting some imaginary excuses and reasoning as to why its impossible for True Elite Mobile Graphic Cards like The Legendary 7970m to topple overrated cards like the 580m/675m, and its cronies the Gtx 560ti and Gtx 570. Will be ordering the M17x R4 this week with a sizzling 7970m for only a $200 upgrade lol :)

Yeah too interesting... Bought 2 x 6990M for my M17X-R2 4 months ago for $900 Aus and have never been able to get quite stable and now a single card shows up possibly issue free and almost as powerful!
    Ohmmmmmmm....

Table21 can we have more information please? Is this card hotter than the 6990M? Power consumption etc also do the fans work natively? This is for the M15x of course :D

Otherwise a fantastic bit of news. Shame I bought this 6990M!

What laptop brands are getting this card? I only heard about samsung and alienware, is there any other I can look for?

In any case, I'm going on vacation to the US (Miami, FL) this June, and I really want to get a gaming laptop (now that I read this thread I think it's gotta be a laptop with 7970m videocard), the catch is I can't get it online. So I guess alienware is out of the question (not that I wanna pay their premium either) Any suggestion guys?

Clevo should get one as well, there is origin in miami, so you can pass by their HQ and see what they can do for you, but basically give most resellers a call and see what they can do for you.

Alienware has some (don t ask me where) stores where they showcase hardware and maybe sell some models straight up but I wouldn't think so due to the amount of customization offered to customers.
Best bet is to arrange for someone to organise a purchase for you via the market here on forumnotebbokreview.
As admins say, "take it to the market" :D

Really? How does that work? the arragement part I mean. Keep in mind that I can't use my credit card for online payments due to my country's laws (don't get me started on that lol), so the only way I can pay is by going directly to the store :(

Also, do you think one can find a laptop with this card in the 1500$ range?

If you get a Clevo/Sager P150EM you can get it in that range; you won't be able to get any other add-ons though and no OS. You can get a Ivy Bridge 3610, 7970m, 8GB DDR3 RAM, and a 750GB Hybrid Momentus XT drive for probably $1500-$1600. This is the build I'm looking at right now.

The problem with clevo/sager is that I haven't found any store that sells them on site, just online retailers :(

Well yeah; thats how most custom computers are.

If you live near one of the Sager/Clevo Re-sellers then you can go pick up the laptop at the shop once it's finished they email you and tell you when to come in and get it.

If you live in California there are many resellers, I live near RJ Tech and Prostar Computers which are two resellers. I will probably be buying from one of them.

Also if you want to not pay sales tax order from Powernotebooks. They have great reviews/customer service and good prices + Free shipping and 3% cash discount if you wire them the money instead of pay on credit/debit cards.

I am probably going with Powernotebooks to save money on tax, when you buy a $1400 laptop the tax is $122. And you save $42 if you get the 3% Cash discount. So where you'd normally pay 1564 with tax + no discount you can get it all for $1368 which is killer. I plan on spending roughly this amount. Maybe $100 or so more.

In the AMD 7970m vs GTX 680m thread someone ran a furmark benchmark with a screenshot and got 67-68C so the temps seem pretty good.

Hey Table, if I have the 7970M, the 7970M xplate/backplate and screws, and an M15x, are there any issues with installing/modifying, or is it a direct plug n play? Also, any modification to the stock Power Supply on a M15x needed?

    Thanks

What is the best deal I can get for a gaming laptop with an HD 7970M and i7? The Alienware MX17 with i7-2760QM / HD7970M in 1080p is $2000. Worth it?

Wow thank you for pointing that out. Any chance powernotebooks does monthly payments? I like how Dell has that for Alienware which makes their notebooks attractive. Getting that much money together at one time is pretty hard for me.

    you're right ntrain...5381 is BS...

I got 6125 3dmark11s, so the 5381 must be BS
Oh and just so you can call more BS, i got 6125 with zero driver support using modded 12.4 beta drivers.

I'll have pics of the 7970m card in my install guide going up later today in the m17x forums

EDIT: Anandtech is showing 5800 3dmark11's and 23k in vantage

Yep, love to see this pics(or video even) of the actual card(up close too of the GPU die so the #'s can be seen).......and will gladly give an apology if evidence is posted that leaves no room for doubt. I just dont see the claims adding up considering the GPU processing power and bandwidth is still significantly less than a pair of 6990m's in xfire mode......and using half the power to boot. I would love to eat my words and make a formal apology. ;)

Just having a hard time believing any of this without unfallible proof.

ANd btw: The anadtech link is just SPECULATION based on AMD's rough claims......nothing more, no actual sitdown review with card in hand with independant benchmarks posted.

Yep, later today I guess.......and I would LOVE to make a formal apology........just hoping the post includes alot of pics and/or videos(video of benchamrks running at stock clocks, stock driver and gpu-z etc) and benchmark scores that cannot be disputed at all.

A card that has the power of a pair of 6990m's(Basically a desktop radeon 6950/6970)while using half the power is more than impressive to say the least..........

If I had a card like this in hand before anyone else and was on a forum like this there would have been loads of pics and videos posted up before even a word was said..........

i don't want an apology. This is not required. With the evidence growing, you'd be a fool to discredit it all. Anandtech isn't going to post up speculation. THey aren't fudzilla

My results were all achieved on stock clocks 850/1200...There will be at least 3 other forum members getting 7970's this week. One member's 7970m is on a UPS truck as we speak. The evidence will be overflowing soon

I will absolutely apologize. Just curious.....how did you get your hands on this card? Is this an ES card, or a full blown production unit?

Still, looking over the hardware specs........the memory bandwidth, the gpu processing power, the shader count(2240 units for 6990m xfire for example vs. 1260 on the 7970m) etc......even with the slightly higher clock rates...........its still not equal to the raw crunching ability of a pair of 6990m's...........which is why I am highly skeptical that its able to perform as well.........like I said, id already have a ton of videos posted if i was one of the first to have this card........

You missed one thing...a drop to 28nm and completely new architecture. Hey man, i was expecting 20-25% increase max over 6990m, but when i started seeing 6k in 3dmark11, i was shocked. 60fps in unigine @1080p, tessellation on normal, high, high? Are you kidding me?

AND THIS IS STOCK clocks with no driver support. what happens when i crank the clocks up to desktop 7870 speeds? The 7970m is a desktop 7870, minus 150mhz core speed

I have a final QS (essentially oem) card. Its a dell with hynix vram...that will clock up another 20% easy

Where are people getting these? Someone in another thread mentioned upgradeyourcomputer seller on Ebay......did they mean "upgradeyourlaptop" which is Eurocom? I got a few bucks to blow.......would have no problems getting a pair of these even if the performance is slightly less than claimed......

Why would performance be "slightly less than claimed?" What possible benefit could be obtained that would force those with early units to go through the trouble to lie about something that will soon be common knowledge anyway? Think about it. Also, the 7 series is leaps and bounds ahead of the 6 series. Throw in the 28nm process, higher binned chips and you're going to see near (or identical) desktop numbers show up in laptops.

I'm likely ordering mine today; should have it around may 8th. Hopefully can get my P150EM with 3610 Ivy Bridge in it by then also; but probably not till may 10-13 because I'm ordering from out of state. Might pay for rush order/shipping. I want this thing ready for Diablo 3, I've been waiting 11 darn years since I was a little 9 year old playing D2 haha.

    Josh speaks the truth

We are seeing desktop gtx 570 performance in a laptop. This is huge. No more compromises because you are gaming in a laptop. no more expectations to turn settings down to run at playable frame rates

We are at a turning point in history here and we are witnessing it first hand
