Why would you use acid? That's dumb. Use alcohol, natures greatest solvent.

Do you have experience with Liquid Ultra and the staining it can do to a die? It stains copper and the die it's applied to. The heat sink can be refinished with an abrasive pad provided by the kit. The die can not. The staining is deep and can not be broken up by simple alcohol and pressure. It's great stuff and stays useful for a long time but that is the drawback aside from the conductivity and it being liquid metal. No need to throw dumb around. Did you know what compound we were referring to?

Well, I have some great news. I received the liquid metal TIC in the mail today and noticed that the temps reached 85C within 10 seconds of playing a game! I pretty much assumed that the heatsink and gpu die was not making contact. When I pulled the heatsink out, barely any if at all the TIC was on the die. I figured out a way to make the GPU die and heatsink have a closer fit. Now I am running 900/1250 @ 0.975V with 70C max temps! Weeeee....finally got my card working properly and now I can play full screen 1600x900 without worrying about temps! Thanks so much everyone...I can now fully enjoy my M15x!

Wow 900 at just 0.975v. 8970m is definitely better binned than 7970m then!

The potential of your card could easily be 1000-1050mhz with reasonable temps and voltage.

Iam jealous! Basically a fully unlocked 7870 card! Nice :D

I might try over clicking again soon. It has been a year and driver support is much better now. Perhaps more stable overclocking is now possible!

Tonight I will see how far 0.975v gets me....

    I think I got to 880 or even 890Mhz and 1400 @ 0.975v but anything over that was insta-BSOD

No, probably a few months ago. LOL @ my max GPU and CPU temps after about an hour of Watch Dogs on pretty damn good settings.
GPU (900/1450@1v) was 65 max and CPU (x25 four cores) was 72. I'm going to ghetto-mount more sideways facing fans :)

What clocks you able to achieve at 0.975v?

Yeah, I am really excited for this card. It hasn't slowed down on anything I threw at it yet. I will try 900/1350 later tonight and see if it's stable. The best part was, I got the 8970M for cheaper than I could have got the 7970M! I also forgot to mention that I had problems playing back Blu-Ray's in my internal Blu-Ray combo drive. This is with Cyberlink PowerDVD 8 supplied from Dell and AMD's Catalyst 14.6 RC Beta driver.

It would play back audio but display no video. I noticed AMD released Beta 14.7 RC drivers on July 9th and downloaded/installed it last night. After that update, Blu-Ray movies now work! (Well with the exception of Avatar, but that is due to the EXTRA layers of DRM from Sony!) I have A110 firmware version of the BD-ROM drive and there is no new update as far as I can search for. I am trying fo figure out how to get it to work, but that is a whole other issue altogether.

Your solution would be anydvd. That software is great at removing DRM from blurays and dvds to allow you to watch on your computer.

I considered removing the BD drive. I didn't want to lose the ability to watch BD movies, and I don't 100% need the storage as of yet. If I decide to do this, I would need to find a way to make the BD-ROM drive external, find out what caddy I would need and what is the highest capacity drive I can get for my money.

I keep my BD player inside an external caddy. Very compact and very usable. The extra 2TB I get inside is VERY useful to me!

2TB is the highest capacity 9.5mm 2.5" drive out now.

Well it looks like I have bad news. :/ my 8970M died. I got artifacts on the screen while gaming twice and after every time, I re pasted and it seemed to fix the issue. Now it does not even display anything at all! I do get caps and scroll locks flashing. I tried my old 5730M and it works on my M15x, so I know the laptop is fine. Any suggestions?

Power drain by removing power plus AC jack then holding power button down for 30 seconds. Leave 8970M in static proof bag for a few hours. I had a similar problem with my 7970m and the above fixed it.

I tried to remove the 8970M and put it in the anti static bag it came in. I left it for about 6 hours and when i popped it back in, before i put in the battery and charger I power cycled it. Now it powers on, but it does not display anything on the screen and does not have the caps/scroll lock flashing. any tips?

Rinse and repeat. This also happened with my 7970m. Do the fans spool up to full and stay at full while display is black? Remove card and store in bag again for longer, power drain and reseat. Be patient.

Worse case, are you able to return the card still?

I tried to leave the card out overnight and now it goes back to caps/scroll lock flashing again :/ I contacted the seller and he agreed to exchange it for another one. The only thing I fear is that he will see the modified bios and he may not accept the replacement. I hope there is no damage to the card or any defects that would cause him to not replace it. This sucks!

Leaving card overnight really did sort my card right out but it sounds likely we have different issues. Were you trying to push the card particularly far on core or memory?

Not really. I kept it at 900/1250 @ 0.975V. I shipped it out today so here's hoping he will replace it. I don't know how it just stopped working. I even put thermal pads to all the places that the 7970M guide has shown. I'm trying to figure out if I did something wrong. :/

Maybe stick with 7970M if you can get a refund. Or else sell the 8970M if you get a new one back.

I will be selling mine quite cheaply (165 pounds) next week if you are interested.

Hmm, maybe if he replaces it I can sell the 8970M and just buy your 7970M. I just gotta see if he will replace it or not. How much is that in USD King? Would you provide the x-bracket/screws?

To update I will sell you card with everything. X bracket, screws, thermal pads which are phobia btw. Only thing you need is thermal paste and the drivers.

I will leave it undervolted at stock for you but give you the vbios rom making program svl7 made for this card along with 2 rom files; the stock with normal 1.05v and the one the card is currently flashed with at 0.975v. I would recommend if you take it to leave it at stock or close to it as the card behaves very cool with this undervolt. It is capable of 950/1450 at stock voltage though if you have the cooling.

I will put it in the marketplace by next week. If you pm me by the end of this week I will hold it for you alone.

I was a big fan of the 0.975v vBIOS before carrying out my cooling mod. It runs nice and cool and at stock clocks! Best of luck with sale King. Hope you break even on 680M and don't get in trouble with wife ;-)

I am still waiting to hear from the seller of the 8970M to see if he will replace it. Also, how much are you willing to let it go for in USD? I don't want to make any promises yet but I will keep you posted as he informs me. The seller should receive it by tomorrow or Thursday. I would more than likely keep it at 0.975v and would probably clock it to 875/1300 speeds.

You might need to bump to 1V to do 875mhz. I know 900 needs 1V for sure.

Ram can you run independent of core voltage. Even at 0.975V you can stably put it at up to 1450mhz-1500mhz without problems. Just extra heat. In fact this card does well with a vram frequency bump. Even at stock clocks you will see improvements up to 1400mhz quite easily. Just make sure your cooling is in order before doing so.
