I have 1080p screen at 120Hz right now.
Looks good!

900p screen OC'ed to 120Hz
-
Nice!
This old thing continues to surprise me.
-
It's possible to OC this displays more, but there is no point to do it. Difference between 60Hz and 120Hz is noticeable, but there is not much difference between 120Hz and 144Hz.
BTW, my display module can work normally up to 136Hz. After this point, lighting of the display start's to distort a bit.deadsmiley likes this. -
Good to know. I was concerned that I may be pushing it a bit. I guess not!

whaaaaaaaaaat? The 1080P display can do 120Hz? That's absolutely nuts. What program do you use to increase the refresh rate?
-
Had to quadruple check that today wasn't April 1st. How does one overclock their display? If this isn't a joke I simply HAVE to know!
-
Gah, I have an AMD card....
-
For AMD cards you can use CRU:

You guys must have hit the panel lottery because mine cannot do 120 Hz
-
Mine hit 120hz, but I didn't leave it that way for too long. I immediately noticed very small scanlines across the entire display, as well as ghosting of windows I had open on the desktop in various spots on the screen. Particularly, I'd see a brighter bar stretch out to both sides of the screen from the title bar of a window in the middle of the desktop. Kind of hard to explain. Maybe I'll take a picture when I get home. Battlefield 4 looked awesome though!

What is the point in increasing refresh rate? Bit of a newb on this subject haha

It eliminates any flicker and the image appears sharper. Someone will come along and explain it much better than I have.

You will notice a major difference in how smooth games look when the refresh rate is above 60hz. Essentially, the FPS we see in games on our laptops is at a cap of 60 due to the refresh rate. Even if your CPU/GPU is capable of playing a game at more than 60fps, that is all that is visible to you because that is all that our screens can output. By playing on a monitor with a higher refresh rate, say 120hz, you're able to see gameplay capped up to 120fps. Which makes a HUGE difference. Even on the desktop, you will notice a major difference in little things like moving the cursor, dragging a window, or scrolling up and down a page. -

This is good to know. I wait until new year to see if anything comes out to replace the 260M (something polaris I hope) will try this then
Bluetooth card dying too so I guess 1 final round of upgrading before goodnight M15x....I hope

This is really cool. I want to try it, but I'm going to research this more before I blow up my screen. Ha ha.

The M15x has been the most venerable and honorable MXM platform that ever existed, truly. Being able to upgrade from Fermi to Maxwell is nothing to sneeze at and will likely never be matched by another laptop computer.deadsmiley and King of Interns like this.

Actually Geforce 200 series until Maxwell
fermi already 1 upgrade in

Update...Installed the GTX 970M and opened the built in nVidia display utility, set custom resolution to 1920x1080 @ 120Hz and...it worked. I'm amazed. This little machine is quite capable. Doubling the refresh rate is quite remarkable. Scrolling/moving windows and mouse around is noticeably smoother.

That is impressive. Seems like the monitor on the M15x is of very high quality if so many can double the refresh rate!
Is there not a chance of burning out the screen so high above spec?
I am hoping to do a final mxm upgrade and do this. I would even be happy with 100hz.
So if this was possible 7 years ago with 7 or 8 year old hardware why do laptops still not come with it as standard...hmmm

Unsure, but the display seems stable for now. If it burns out, I would try to track down one of those rare AUO 95% gamut panelshmscott likes this.

Still most articles I read say average overclock is about 50% so getting 100% on a screen is a very good result!

I have a question. Does this apply to all the 1080p panels on the m15x? Cause I can't find an option for 120hz on my panel O_O

Yup. There isnt : you have to overclock it and see what it can run

The default 60hz is usually the only preprogrammed option, sometimes you might see 30hz or 40hz, but for the most part just one 60hz option.
You need to create a custom resolution, and currently only Nvidia's Control panel Custom Resolution works as expected.
Here's a brief visual tip to help you set it up:
You click Customize, and then Create Custom Resolution, then only change the refresh from 60 to whatever you want to try, then save it if it works.
17.3"/18.4" have worked for me and others OC'ing from 70hz - 120hz, mostly 90hz-100hz is stable.
15.6" panels haven't done as well, topping out at 63hz, so don't expect much.
Have fun

Yeah this is definitely something I would call an "anomaly"
Very uncommon to have a display overclock this high.hmscott likes this. -
WOW!
Just saw this and tried with CRU utility on my M290x with 1600x900 display. WHAM 120Hz working!!
Thanks a lot!! -

Then again M15x is a special machine. Built to put OEMs and their present antics to shame

Ahhh okay. Thanks guys! Indeed I still can't let go of my m15x but I really can't wait for the pascal mod King
-
Can you tell me what settings you used? I have the same display but couldn't get it to look right. Thanks in advance.
-
I just unpacked and opened the CRU utility and in the first window with default selected screen, I chose to add a resolution and then just changed the value from 59.978Hz to 120Hz.
-
Thanks, I'll give it another go.
-
Can't get it to work right. I get visible line across the screen. Tried 120 and different increments down to 100 with the same results. Are you sure you are actually seeing the 120Hz mode? I had to move the 120Hz profile to the top of the list (or delete the default profiles), click OK on CRU, then double-click the restart executable for the change to take effect. Otherwise it just defaults to the 59Hz profile.
-
Yes I am sure it is 120Hz, especially when scrolling web pages, as my eyes are very sensitive to flicker, unfortunately (and why I never had a plasma TV). After creating the custom resolution, I go to windows graphics adaptor settings and choose 120Hz for the display, and thats where the magic happens . I'm sad to hear it doesnt work for you - have you tried 90Hz or maybe 75Hz?
-
Tried 90Hz, I can still see the horizontal lines, although they are fainter. Tried 70Hz and it looks good, but the stock refresh rate looks a bit crisper, especially video content. Maybe it has to do with my GPU (Firepro m6000).

Currently my M15x and I are separated my about 6 thousand miles. When I return in 3 week it will be show time

I couldn't get it to overclock worth a damn with the 7970M. 970M i was able to go from 60 -> 120
Anybody else overclock the display?
