I put some paste on roughly a hour ago, but it is not overheating, it never gets above 60, no matter what.

Make sure you're Intel drivers are updated. Make sure your paste is properly applied, but I'd say it's driver related. Where'd you get the CPU at?

I think you are right, I need to update drivers, doing it now. Would being on A03 bios matter?

I bought it from upgrade monkey on ebay.

Edit: What drivers should/do I need to update?

I just seen that the speedstep thing was disabled in bios, I now know what it does, enabled it and now we are good to go.

I am up to 7.3 and a lot hotter. 60 on idle and 80 in game.

Yup that sounds about right. With an OC I have 7.5 WEI.

Don't forget to use HWinfo64 to control your fans manually. Dialling in a adequate fan speed before gaming can really help keep your temps down.

60 idle is too hot though. In ambient 24C as I type my 920xm is idling at just 40C. Also update your bios to A09. It is the latest and greatest.

I have the computer sitting on a tote right now (staying at my parents house until school starts again, no other place to put it :( ) but right now, the idle is sitting at about 44-50. I used the arctic silver 5 paste and read that it needs to cure, so with the fans blowing, no tote and the paste curing, I think I can reach 40. I did put a bit of a heavy layer on though, I will reapply at a later time if the temps do not come down.

I installed HWinfo64, maxed the cpu fan out, now I sit at 38-39 on idle.

You don't need a heavy layer. You need a thin even layer. Heavy Layer=Bad Paste job=Higher temperatures

Yeah I know, it was my first time :D

It was not super heavy, I put a little in the middle and spread it out as even, I will re-do it and see what happens, though my temps are decent for now.

How is the 7970 coming along?

460m came in the mail today, had to update to A09 and all went well (thanks to all of the bios update guides)!

My only problem now is the x-bracket, can I remove the one off my 240m and put it on the 460m (I know it will fit, but how would you remove it, it is stuck on there good).

The 460m came with no x-bracket and there is one on ebay but they want 25 plus 60 shipping :/

Just push it gently from the GPU die side. It should slowly become loose. Just don't hurry. Be patient. Same goes for when you put it on the new card.

Too bad I am a nvidia fan boy...I think the 460m will work for now, I do not need anything crazy, I thought the 240m did a decent job anyways :D

The funny thing is, I have played 3 hours of starcraft 1 and 20 minutes of new vegas since installing the 460m, why did I upgrade

lol you will need every ounce of power the 460M can summon when you move onto more modern titles. It is a good midrange card. But nvidia and amd will soon be releasing a new gen of midrange cards that will probably outpeform even the 580M and 6990M lol.

The M15x is more comfortable with such a card heatwise anyways. Congrats on the upgrades and have fun!

Looks like I am having the 460m throttling issue, it will not clock up.

Edit: Stealth mode was off, I turned on stealth mode and then turned it off (after 5 minutes or so, it did not want to turn off, it now clocks up again. Why does it do that when stealth mode is off, and is there anyway to disable stealth mode? I has got to be the worst idea I have seen...

Me too :) Can't wait for the 7870M to debut... Only if I replace my GPU heatsink with something more substantial (a possibility) will I consider the 7970M. The M15x just isn't cut out 100% for a 100W card...

^^^^ yeah i know what you mean king if interns, now that i revived my m15x im just waiting for the 7950 to debut and at 50watts(if this is correct, along with the 3d mark 11 p4000 score....? it should perform as an oc 6990m) which shouldnt cause any type of throttling. the m15x will be awesome with the 920xm and the 7950m combo, i cant wait. i will post some pics of a m15x gpu heatsink replacement later that i had been working on till i found out my pump was dead.......... i use some older hardware but cheap

This forum never ceases to amaze me with all the tech savvy m15x owners. I recently upgraded my 240m to a 560m a few months ago (for original poster asking) and my performance went up by about 40-50%. Unfortunately I will probably upgrade yet again when the 7970m officially launches.

A few questions for you gentleman:

I have had this m15x for about 2 years now, I havean't repasted my CPU since I got it, but I was thinking about buying a new CPU anyways, but I read here that there were some issues using the 920xm with the 560m in relation to throttling issues. Is the 740qm sufficient enough to support the 7970m? I want to upgrade my cpu eventually but I don't know much about going about it (I know theres posts here). It was pretty easy enough putting my 560m in (albeit with modified drivers).

Also, I noticed in certain games (Swtor in particular) everything runs pretty nice even on high settings, but when we get into boss encounters where it's shader-unfriendly due to a ton of spells and effects being tossed out, my fps drops dramatically. The card should support all this drama, but is my CPU to blame for the sudden drop in fps? It goes from literally 50 fps down to 15. Is it strictly the GPU?

    Thanks in advance!

What CPU are you running right now? If you have a 920XM why on earth would you want to downgrade why not just down clock it to a 740Q. I'm running a 940XM paired with 6990m with no throttling. I love playing WoW on ULTRA with FPS ranging from 60+ frames up to 170+ frames.

Sorry for not clarifying. I currently have a i7 740qm. WoW has never really been graphically demanding, my old 240m used to play it just fine, but like I said, I would experience severe fps drop, even with the older card when I would go to firelands and we would fight bosses. All those spell effects and animations just used to eat my fps up. I'm sure my 560m would not have those issues, but I just wonder if my CPU is strong enough and if that might be a contributing factor for my fps drops during spell-effect heavy fights. Swtor is my main concern atm. I have to run the game on it's lowest settings just to do end-game content like explosive conflict.

I can honestly say it isn't your CPU it's your nvidia card. I used to be a nvidia fanboy also but always realized massive throttling but since I switched to the 6990m throttling is a thing of the past. I believe that the GTX 560m draws a lot more power then what nvidia states which causes the throttling.

Well I won't be getting a new card untill the 7970m launches, is there any way to check to see if it's throttling and what can I do to prevent or stop it?

A good purchase. It is the same as the normal slim line 240W flextronics adaptor anyway.

Besides the adaptor is actually lighter and smaller than the 150W one which is pretty amazing. It is slightly fatter but because of its half thickness much easier to pack away in a decent laptop bag :)

I actually still have the 150W one spare if you want it for just cost of shipping. However I also recommend going 240W if you can afford it!

I still need to get another laptop bag as my old one I used for my m11x is well, small :D

Have yet to play a game on it :p I know this might seem a waste but I paid the equivalent of about $150 dollars for it when all is said and done. Mainly proceeds from 6990M made this possible and is the reason I went for it when I did and once I found a massivly great deal come my way ;)

I have only played one mission of red alert 3 on it which doesn't count.

Not interested in any game out there until Far Cry 3, C&C Generals 2 or Crysis 3 so it won't be used for gaming for about 6 months lol

I have looked and looked but the PC gaming industry looks pretty baren to me. No decent new RTS or firstperson shooter to play. I played BF3 on the 6990M maxed and was not impressed at all. Too short and too consolized/dumbed down...also the graphics were no way as good as crysis 2 or even crysis 1 for that matter. So basically I am in for a wait. I might buy WC3 for a laugh and have a play around but otherwise no interested in gaming atm.

No problem about the PSU. I will keep it spare just in case something happens.

I can not wait for Hitman, and I could say I want RE6 as well, but I would be better off playing COD at that point lol

But that is it, besides Hitman I am not looking forward to anything, at least the Mass Effect 3 multiplayer is getting another DLC pack next week.

Well I ordered a M17x R4 today. My plan was to put a 7970m into the M15x, but between what I can get for the computer and the cost of the card/bracket and such, I decided to spend the extra money and just get the R4 instead.
