I had almost the exact same problem, Alienware is now replacing my M17x with a new R3, of course I also had a host of other problems. and them replacing almost every part didn't help the problem. as for the 460m I'm not positive. but I am fairly certain I'll be putting mine up for sale to move up to the 485m soon.
-
I don't see how that really relates to what he's asking...
-
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
it didn't but the first part did, he also stated
And there are plenty more people who have M17x R3's that plan on upgrading and selling their 460m's, so I'm letting him know it wont be too difficult to find a 460m soon enough. -
Fair point. Apologies.
As for the 460M, try here.
Laptop Video Cards - R&J Technology, Clevo Barebone Notebook kits, Laptop and desktop system builder
I just wanna say I take no credit for the link, twas given me by somebody else on here!! -
Im having the exact same problems
They have replaced my GC once with another 260 and it seems to crash more often now .
Im going to ask for a different type of card next time . -
I had the 260 as well and sometimes it would crash being stuck in certain games or showing rainbow colors (red, green, yellow, etc) However that may partly be the the driver issues. You may want to play around with different drivers to see which is more stable. However I did end up upgrading the GC to the 460 and I have never been happier!
-
I have now bought a 460 as cant be botherd with the hassle of the 260 ..
-
Normal warranty covers any hardware glitches and so on. And you're on complete cover, you could just call them and tell them you're having problems with your gpu, they'll most likely change it for you.
I have all these issues too, replaced my GPU twice, mobo 3 times, ram once, speakers, keyboard, laptop housing, and I'm just on a normal warranty plan.
However, I do suggest upgrading to the newest driver and see whether the problems persists and if it does, just get it replaced.
I'm currently using gtx260m, gonna upgrade it soon. -
thans dude for the link i may find it usefull later!!
-
460m......im lovin it!!
ty! -
hi all.....
can i get perfomance benchmarks@ 260m,5870,460m....which could help me in
upgrading or replacing my stock card? -
All thanks should be directed at Revelator, am pretty sure it was him who pointed me that way. I know almost nothing about computers and hardware acquisition, short of scouring Ebay and tearing my hair out.
-
actually im newbie...here!!
ill be along with the pace soon !!!
-
Yup, this is the regular haunt of many a notebook magician. A genuine fountain of knowledge, so drink deep!
-
I'm upgrading from 260 to 5850, what are the procedures I should go through to completely remove my video drivers on my nVidia to replace them with my ATI ones?
-
Yes, uninstall the nvidia software (use ccleaner afterwards if you wish), then install the card and then the ATI drivers.
-
My i7 920XM shouldn't throttle with the ATI 5850 card right?
I'm not going to OC or anything
Ever since I havent been using Rivertuner and after I switched BIOS ver A09 I'm getting a BSOD kernal power 41 -
No, it works perfectly for me so far.
What do you mean? Your system crashes since the A09 update? -
The Revelator Notebook Prophet
-
Well you got throttlestop, I dont want to have to use any type of program at all to stop throttling
-
Take a closer look. He used Throttlestop only to verify that there's no throttling, he didn't manipulate anything at the CPU with it.
-
The Revelator Notebook Prophet
"Monitoring Only"
-
yeah you will be fine with that combo. throttling for the most part is the thing of the past.

Here's an update incase anyone is wanting to know (WEI score)
After I upgraded my HD and GPU, I'm getting
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU X 920 @ 2.00GHz 7.4
Memory (RAM) 6.00 GB 7.4
Graphics ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5800 Series 7.2
Gaming graphics 3834 MB Total available graphics memory 7.2
Primary hard disk 86GB Free (119GB Total) 7.5
My old 260m was at 6.7 -
The Revelator Notebook Prophet
That was fast! Congratulations. I suspect that you will enjoy the 5850 very much. Remember that it is *highly* overclockable.
-
I hope my BSOD error 41, Kernal Power is no more since I got a new GPU
-
Nice scores mate I managed to get 7.5 for CPU running 26x on all cores. Other values are the same. Enjoy!
