The 260 and especially the 5870 shouldn't have any issues gaming at 1080.

I treid enabling stealth mode while on battery, and it gave me a window saying said "STEALTH MODE NOT SUPPORT ON BATTERY" (yes, with that exact grammar :p) So... is that supposed to happen?

People working at Flextronics are Asian (China) so there is your poor grammar ;)

How does it look if you're gaming 900p on your set up? does it look blurry?

    No, it doesn't.

But I must be honest and say I haven't run a game at non-native res in a long time. No need as GPU's are pretty powerful these days ;)

Yup! i have 6gb of ram so thats what i got. one 2gb stick and 1 4gb stick ..just make sure theyre the same speed.
And yea the 260m OC's very very nicely! and can handle way more than its stock clocks...enough for it to go well over a stock 280m!

Thats pretty nice! but i would try giving it a little more! im running at 680/1100/1660 stable. I know not all cards are the same but it should give a little more ;) ... with all these 5870m owners nowadays... i think im going to push my 260m to the limit, and upp the voltage! :p. after all... my 5870m should be coming in about 10days :D :D yes i did order it :p

its time to see what the GTX 260m is really made of! i wanna be able to get 700/1100/1700 rock solid stable.. and uping the voltage should do just that....as i managed to complete 1 rrun of vantage...but crashed on the second while stress testing for stability :( ...soo close

definitely but try to have 2.5 times the core in the shader makes it run smoother for example my clocks
    650/1100/1625

1625 divided by 650 equals 2.5 i try keeping to that system for my clocks

Well I'm happy to report that after an evening of trial and error, I've managed to OC to a peak of 700/1100/1600. No glitches, crashes, or artifacts. I've stressed it as much as I can (played Crysis Warhead for a good while) and the highest temp I've seen was 75C.

    :D

For those wondering, my driver is 186.47

I may not have hit 1700 with the shader clock, but it still pretty dern good.

Ok got my M15x today and I have a few questions.

    1. When I start up there's a loud clacking at the DVD drive, it's a sec and it starts up.

    2. For some reason the cpu and ram speeds fluctuate when speedstep is off but not when it's on.

    3. My ram can only go up to 1066 mhz even though they are rated at 1600 mhz.

How come for all those lol...

    I don't think there's any 1600mhz ram for notebook, there's only 1066 and 1333 dd3 rams.

I got P62XX at those clocks.. i dont quite remember what those last 2 numbers were... i probably should've taken a screenshot lol..ohwell i successfully flashed my gpu to 1v last night at like 130 am.. but since im at work today... i didn't get to do any testing....so the next time i do a run ( tonight when im home) ill take a screenshot again. I'm thinking of applying some AS5 paste on the 260m to handle the higher temps with 1v...instead of that cheap crap dell uses. Should help abit. I do remember maxing out at 86degrees though...but that might be because i wasn't at a desk.. it was on my lap ( i did however, make sure the vents were clear).

That is pretty damn nice! i'd try lowering your mem some...and giving a boost to the shaders as im pretty sure they help more.

186.47 is one of the best drivers for benching... 197.16 works really well in the real-world when gaming.. but gives lower scores when benching. So you might wannagive them a try ( if you don't care about benchign that is... like me :) )

How much better is 197.16? The process of wiping all my drivers and installing new ones is pretty annoying, so I was just wondering if it's worth the time. Do you know if they respond to overclocking better than 186.47?

well i used to have 194.xx drivers and could only attain 660/1100/1660 stable... then i upgraded to 197.16 and i attained 700/1100/1700 which i thought was stable.. but after running a second vantage run crashed.

still pretty impressive since i did complete one run...and with the 194.xx drivers everything would go out of whack right away without benching if i raised clocks from by 5 from 660/1100/1700 to 665/1100/1660 ...

So i'd say theyre better than 194.xx drivers for sure... not sure about 186.xx drivers...

But gameplay is forsure better at stock with the 197.xx drivers so i'd go through the hassle anyways...They just seem really solid and stable. My favorite drivers so far (not for benching really though)

EDIT: i Really hope 700/1100/1700 will be stable with the voltage increase... can't wait to test it out tonight :D... if they are.. i won't even try going higher...as i'm pretty sure thats already pushing it...and those clocks are friggin sweet considering the 550/950/1350 stock

How do you go about increasing the voltage, do you need RivaTuner? I was hoping to stick with Nvidia system tools, since it's pretty reliable.

no you have to flash the bios...by creating a boot-usb drive, then go into the bios at startup and select boot from usb. Its a little risky, and can brick your computer if you dont do it correctly....that being said..its easy and takes no longer than 5mins.... You can still use NST, however Rivatuner is the only way to get rid of throttling 100% ( if you experience any)

Anyways the precedure and files you need is all on the first page of this thread by 5050joker:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...e-investigation-stock-clocks-overclocked.html

Remeber though, that flashing to 1v will make your gpu run hotter...so monitor those temps closely!!!

Thanks for the info, +rep ;) So far my most stable clocks are 700/1050/1650, and that's without messing with the voltage. My highest temps with these settings were around 75, though under most cases it hovers around 70. Since I still have some thermal room to breath, I may try uping the voltage, but my performance is good enough for now, so I'm not sure if I really want to mess with it.

Heh. I knew I shouldn't have got my hopes up. UPS states that there is an 'Emergency situation' with my package, which happens to be in Shanghai, which will cause a delay in shipping. I'm glad in a way, it reminds me never to get my hopes up (I'm not complaining about Dell or UPS, as it's neither of those companies fault), as a great man once said 'Wishful thinking only leads to disappointment'.

On a side note, I can't wait for it arrive sometime this year.

I tried installing 197.16 and went to do some gaming, but i just got really poor performance. So i went back to 184 and seemed to be getting good fps in games. (90-120 sims 3, 60fps outside in wow) compared to the 197 which just seemed to lag really bad for some reason..

so J did you flash the 260 yet?

what programs are you planning on using? it all depends on your uses, if just gaming then 3-4gb is fine, but if you do alot of video encoding, photoshop, or a heavy multi tasker then 6-8gb. from 1066 to 1333 is around 5% increase in performance. best to use task manager to see how much ram you are using, if your maxing it out, then i suggest getting more.

There is practically zero performance difference between 1066 and 1333.

Latencies help even out the slight advantage in clock speed.

i work for a design company, we make signs, also do large format printing, make neon and work with LEDs, and custom fab work. so pretty much anything you can think of we can make, if your willing to pay the price :D . have a couple of really big projects going on at the same time, so not that much free time lately. yeah i had the dust in the screen for a few weeks already but been lazy to fix it, then had the keyboard problem a few days ago. although i did find some free time today to make a few custom skins for my lappy, but waiting to put it on after the screen repair. someday i put in 12-14 hours and sometimes 7 days a week. that and family equals no game time, lol. but its not really that bad, the pay is super great and i get to go to alot of crazy places.

also use this number when calling tech support: (305) 251-9797
just press 0 and if you get operator ask for tech support, took me 10 sec to reach tech support.

so what are you gonna do in boston?

I'm failing at finding topics that I know I've seen around here - but can anyone give me a fairly solid starting set of clocks for overclocking the 260M? I don't need anything extreme, but a decent solid overclock that I can work from would be appreciated. I've tried searching a few places but hte numbers vary by a big margin between areas.

I am pretty sure it is the same 9.7mm they use in the sxps machines. I will be doing the same but my m15x is still stuck in shanghai thanks to the icelandic volcano disruption!

BTW, you will probably have to do some modding to get it to fit. It will probably need the end of the caddy hacked off as it is designed to fit in a nomal optical bay. I currently use a ODD->HDD bay I got off ebay in my clevo so will be hacking that into my m15x.

Next I want to find a 9.7mm ODD caddy to fit the slot loader and use it as an external. So far I can only find 12mm sata ODD caddys.

LoL, this thing is a beast. I just finished playing Borderlands with the game running 4x simultaneously and all joined in a 4-player LAN game. I got a very playable 28 to 45 FPS with occasional shuddering, dropping to 20 during some heavier fights. Might be time to try overclocking :)

Does anyone know what kind of thermal paste is used by Dell? I've got some AS5 (arctic silver 5) left over and was wondering if it's worth replacing the compounds in the M15x..

    Thanks in advance :)

EDIT: It seems that the m15x also had some exploration with new thermal compound and apparently the AS5 was worse than the original compound used by alienware. I imagine they're using the same or better with the newer machine (especially since it cools so great).. So probably I'll just leave it as is unless anyone is sure it would help :)
