Theyre the fastest...but its up to you man...SSD's get complicated... REAL complicated.. between sequential speeds...random access speeds..sustained speeds...TRIM or No TRIM....its a big mumbojumbo of specs all coming together to give its overall performance.... and the intel g2 takes the cake... alot of older model ssd's get REALLY slow after a while.. and only start off quick... Here to be safe... get any one of these :D and you should be good.

The OEM is the drive alone. No cables, no manual, no mounting brackets... but i think you should be good with the oem

80gb is too small for me... but if you keep basic apps on it it shud be enough... you could also transform your existing 250gb hdd into an esata external one with a kit, which would make it like an internal hdd just outside your laptop... since esata is ALOT faster than usb2.0 and you could install and run apps off it no problem...and if im not mistaken the cables inside your m15x for your hdd are good for your ssd also. and im also pretty sure trim is on the firmware already...maybe not the latest and greatest firmware.. but trim should be on there...

no cables needed for firmware update, you just flash it like your bios. just install it, if its new then it should already have the newest firmware already.

Well less than 4 days and my motherboard is dead...

Tech is coming in a few days...

Sucks... I don't want some unknowledgeable 3rd party tech...

This honestly sucks so bad right now...Dell wouldn't even let me replace it with a tech over the phone.

Can I do the work and have the tech just watch?

I just sold my 128GB SSD, I was using the G Skill Falcon drive and it was awesome. The only downside was that 128GB wasn't enough space at all. I'll have to wait for larger SSD's to come down in price before getting back on the bandwagon. (E-Sata 500GB was just too much of a pain to carry around, its only a solution if your laptop is staying put).

thats a bummer bro, well at least now you can take everything apart to check it out, without worrying about damaging it. :D

yeah 160gb and not enough either, so i bought a 1tb western digital, slower but much easier to carry around, pretty awesome for something the size of a deck of cards.

Have you tried the classic troubleshoot stuff?

    Inap
Pretty cool, the city itself is sweet, the stuff we're doing is pretty lame though :p Historical stuff... Oh well tomorrow's gonna be better, going to cambridge :D
The only downside so far, the traffic... >.>
My M15x just went nuts for 15 minutes, didnt start at all..
I got the battery out and waited for a while before rebooting.. Changed my Bios settings (I had modified them earlier..) and it works fine again.. still no AlienFx, so less wow-factor :(

Hey guys i'm really torn between the M15x and the M17x, i have a couple questions about the M15x :)

    1. How much better is the M15x 9-cell battery in things like basic web surfing and taking notes compared to an m17x with a single 5870 and one hard drive? Whats the longest run time anyone has experienced?

    2. Are the speakers on the M15x the same as the M17x or are they not quite as well regarded?

    3. I've seen both in this vid YouTube - Alienware m15x - new gaming treasure but how does the M15x "feel" compared to the M17x? Would the 3lbs really make a difference or are both pretty un-portable? Kind of hard to explain but would it feel a lot lighter in a backpack or is it kind of negligible since there both really big? Thanks

I can only answer 1 - but in light use I get about 3 hours. In heavy use 1h30m or thereabouts.

Meh, yeah the difference is barely noticeable once in the backpack. It sure feel a little lighter, but it is also smaller..
Cant tell the speakers difference.. I never really use them, ear buds/headphones :)
For the battery, well thats a 33% increase over the 6 cell, I can last about 100 minutes on battery, watching a movie or playing lights games, so You can expect to get more like 135 mins out of the 9 cell.
If you are just surfing, you can last much longer... Turn off alienfx, speakers and screen luminosity, you can last easily 200 mins!

Nah there is no chance of voiding your warranty when you are opening your computer, thats Alienware's good side!
If you wanna make sure you can always give dell a call, the tech support will help you going through the troubleshooting's steps..!
I once had my computer unresponsive for 2 days, called a tech guy, he was coming on monday, got it fixed in a matter of hour with this forum helping out!

Yep Alienfx is the lighting system!
The g2 intel are worth it, but the G3 definatly are coming, in about a year the new SSD will be cheaper and better, encrypted in 22nm or something, you should see a great difference.. But for now the INtel are the way to go, along with the OCZ stuff.

Just wanted to drop by and say hello. I'm new to the forums and a new owner of an M15x, just ordered yesterday. I had a couple questions I would like to ask. I'll be honest I'm not really the most computer savvy guy, I get by with just the basic knowledge about them. But I love to game and that's why I got the M15x.

Anyways my first question was when it arrives what should be the first thing I should do or what should I look for? I didn't have them install McAfee because I hate their AV on my desktop, only reason it's on their because it's an old computer and it's free from Comcast. But I don't want my M15x ever touching it so, what good AV software would you guy recommend? I'd like to purchase this now so I can have it ready to install on my system when it arrives.

That's all my questions. I can't wait for it too arrive, it's my first Alienware system. This is what I got. Let me know what you guys think?!

    I don't mean to be a nerd, but it's actually a 50% increase! Going from 9 to 6cell would be a 33% decrease.

    9 cells have 150% the capacity of 6 cells, not 133% :)

    Congratulations!

Regarding and AVirus, I use comodo since it's free, includes and firewall and an application firewall (defense+) plus some other fancy stuff. Very solid and configurable and very easy and simple (if you don't use defense+ and the firewall hehe)..

Check it out Firewall & Antivirus Software Suite - Internet Security | Comodo

McAfee is worse than the virus haha.

Also check out Malwarebytes for their AntiMalware app. It's nice, small and free and it finds practically everything and removes it 99% of the time.

The machine is a great desktop replacement. Solid performer and although it's not up to par with the desktop side of things, it's one of the best laptops out there. Pretty upgradeable too. Prepare to be fulfilled :)
