Good Lord, Joker, I surprised it didn't incinerate. That's awesome, but believable; 7 seconds is other-worldly. Congratulations doesn't seem adequate for that kind of result. Did they increase the TDP any on the 940XM?

Here's another run I just did. This is with the system fully loaded with 5 firefox tabs, radeon pro, TS, MS essentials, alienware osd/command center and no services disabled--in another words, if I disabled services and did a clean run it probably would have broken the 7 second barrier. Rev, the default TDP on the 940xm is 62W. I did this run at 105W!

The undisputed King of wPrime in the AW world, and maybe far afield. Very nice indeed.

Edit: How can you tell TDP was at 105W? (face palm!)

I'm hoping that with some CPU cooling tweaks, I can run under 7 without worries of the CPU getting too hot. With an AC blowing on it, I bet sub 7 runs would be very easy to do.

Lol I don't know.. but my score's for Wprime are at 38 seconds?!

EDIT: Cancel that, forgot to set it at 8 cores. Change that to 8.7 seconds! Not 38 lol..

EDIT2: Managed to get it to 7.8, but closed it without taking a screenshot and gave up lol again.

I put 90 on mine.. but I think I can handle more as well.

EDIT: Wprime run up. Proper run after restart. Did have a few programs open though (msn, hwmonitor, cpu-z, TS, radeonPro, skype.. mostly)

So no Joker score.. but its decent.

    105W/72A used.

    What's a safe everyday usage/gaming TDP increase?

BTW, the 920 Desktop can achieve 9.2 seconds on stock.

Looking at hwbot wprime 1.55 listings, OC'd i7 920's are running slower than the runs I put up. There's of course some that are a few seconds faster but those are hitting 4 ghz. Once I'm done tweaking my cooling, I bet if I raise my bclk and tdp and hit about 3.8 ghz on the cores, I'll start matching the very best i7 920 desktop numbers. Who needs an X7200 eh? :D

Here is a good wprime run I did for HWBot for my 920 and 940 CPUs. Not to bad. don't remember what TDP I used. The 940 I probably could have pushed harder, but there wasn't really much incentive. I should be able to match my 920XM fairly easily. Maybe one day this week I'll put the 940 back in.

These runs are done at room temp just sitting on the cryo cooler on my desk. I'm too lazy to set up a stand for an A/C runs.

DR650SE -- that's sick. 6.559 seconds. On air? You are the new King. Congratulations. Now, how do you do that? Joker was running a 940 at 105W, but is nearly a full second slower. There has to be a limit on this hardware. So, teach the newbie a few tricks.

@Inap -- great run for us normal folks and amateurs. Kicked my assets.

Lol thanks, well for starters I used SetFSB to up the FSB of the CPU so I didn't need so many multipliers. I don't like the CPU multiplier jumping around to much. Upped the voltage by 150mV in the BIOS, and cranked the TDP way up. Probably 115W or higher. I figured it's a quick run so it should be ok. Plus, I got a warranty. Can the voltage be upped in the M15x? the M15x has the ability to increase by 75mV or 150mV, which really isn't much. I've run super_pi 1M runs at 3.963GHz before. The wprime run was just over 3.7GHz. Plus the 940XM is really a 920XM running with a multiplier of 25 at default versus the 24 the 920 has. Other than that they are the same chip. Only advantage to the 940 is the default speed. If your overclocking, a 920 will do just as good. In Vantage my 920XM has scored 22366 for the CPU, though my GPU score wasn't up to snuff.

Once I get home I'm going to try and get some stuff together to do some bench runs on dry ice which should give me a CPU operating temp of -70*C to -80*C. Pretty low, but I don't think it'll be low enough to run into any cold bug issues.

Also looking for ways to get into the voltage to increase that some more. Can't find any software to do it, and I'm no programer.

See what did I say? Increase teh bclk and it'll reach desktop OC'd 920 speeds. :D The M15x doesn't have CPU voltage control but they should still be able to push sub 7 if they use setfsb + tdp control.

Yeah. SetFSB won't work on mine. Hit or miss on the PLL with the M15x's, but shouldn't be that big a handicap with multiplier control, even if less precise. How do you find a limit for TDP (short of killing the brick or the motherboard)? Are there any warning signs? I lost a mobo pushing a Vantage CPU run at pretty high levels (but with TDP nowhere near the levels you guys are talking about), and got no warning signs at all before things just went black -- and stayed that way.

Yea, the 920/940 really are impressive chips. Currently I hold all the HWbot records for the 520M/920XM/940XM chips except the Super_pi 32M record which TheCodeBreaker holds. It appears his CPU idles (with 5% OC enabled) at 140.9MHz and mine at 140.4MHz. So when he increases his multiplier to 26 or 27, he is at 3.94GHz and I'm at 3.963GHz. So since his is slightly lower, it is just stable enough for a sub 10min super_pi 32M run. Mine makes it 1.5 min into it and crashes, and if I lower anything, I don't have a high enough clock speed to keep up. :( It's ok, when I put it on dry ice it should help out a little. Just give me a few months :p I tried everything from high multipliers (29,30) with a really low FSB (under 130MHz) to high FSB (150MHz) with low multipliers (around 22-23), just couldn't find the sweet spot. Yet. Played with it for maybe 4 hours yesterday.

To give an idea of how much testing and crashing I've done on my benchmarking SSD (40 GB Intel X-25V) Crystal disk at the moment is reporting a "Power on Count" of 955 times, and "Power on Hours" of only 162. Thats roughly 17 times I've powered it on per hour (16.9 times/hour) Sad really :p Out here I have no life lol.

Which explains why there are a few players in the benchmarking business, and the rest of us are dabblers and witnesses. Still, it's fun to learn what your computer's capabilities are and how they work. Thanks for giving us a peek inside.

No problem. Yea it is fun. Although when I get tired of the benching I use my computer to run my projector and watch movies. I havn't had a chance to game on it yet either. But that should be coming this week. I agree, it is fun. But once I have the benching done, I run everything at stock settings.

My buddy tells me that when the day comes that computers take over the world my notebooks are going to come back and haunt me for torturing them. Then he laughs when I baby it by wiping fingerprints off :p

Was that wPrime run at stock i7-920XM clocks? If so, that cpu is very close to twice as fast as the i7-620M, which makes a lot of sense if it is indeed true that the Extreme cpus can have each core to the highest Turbo Boost multiplier at the same time.

No, not stock; it was heavily overclocked with multipliers set to 26-26-26-26, so all 4 cores (8 threads) were running at 3.467Ghz. In that configuration, it is twice as fast as a stock i7-620M, but it can't stay there for long because of the heat.

ThrottleStop. Works only for the 920XM though

You may also try setFSB but that works dodgy (as there is a problem with timings) and not all M15x's seem to work with it

    Edit:

What were your temps while doing that? Did you use an external cooler?

Well if it's stable for ever. If it's shuts down or freezes or BSOD at all, then not stable. So really, how long it can run, and whether or not it's stable are two completely differant things. Also depends on what CPU your running 3.2GHz on. ;)

All - Does anyone every benchmark the base I3-330 to see what game performance is like with the 5730 or the 5850?

I have checked about 10 pages, searched and didn't see any figures.
