Question: How do you guys who bought your Alienware pre-September 2009/Dell merger systems get your video card drivers? Surely you haven't got nVidia's versions to work, have you?
A More Optional Read for an Explanation: Hello all - this is my first post here. I've come in hopes to find a solution to a problem I would imagine has irked anyone who bought an M15x before September 2009. I'll explain my case in a nutshell: I bought my system around July 2009...but Alienware stopped making Alienware drivers for my graphics card in October 2009, thanks to the merger with Dell (joy). As such, I've been running on 2 year old drivers on my main (and only) computer! I'm even in a certain beta to a certain game that everyone's looking forward to...and now it tells me that I can't even run it because my drivers are too old! This was not the case in the previous version, so I know that my drivers are on their last legs. If I can't even run games on said rickety legs, something's gotta give.
And I've tried to make it give. Several times this year I've tried to call Alienware about this (they were more passing efforts during the school year), and a few months ago I tried to install nVidia drivers to no effect. Months later, I was told be a tech support fellow from Alienware that I should try that again - so I got the latest drivers, installed them, and...ended up getting error messages, the system telling me I don't actually have a graphics card installed (it specifically said I don't have mine in there, by name), and a good number of lovely blue screens that have happened so many times after I tried to get my computer simply turned *on* again that I wonder if my computer's about to implode from just trying to get new video drivers(it's worth mentioning my computer was largely fine before trying to upgrade, even if I always felt it was underperforming a bit). I must also say that the blue screens have only occured upon trying to start the computer up again - not during net browsing or anything.
So I have to ask - how do you guys who bought your systems pre-September 2009 get your video card drivers? Surely you haven't just got them through nVidia, no?
In any case, could you all help with my problem in particular? The issue is that it tells me my graphics card does not exist on my system after I try to install the latest nVidia drivers - it might be because my card is Alienware made and just won't take the standard nVidia drivers, but I'm not sure. Alienware tells me they should work fine. In any case, I'll post my specs below, but I'll show you an older version as well (right now, my graphics card is not showing up in current dxdiags because of how my new drivers are not taking - so I'll give a before and after). Note: That missing item is a NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GT, which I am trying to get to run on my Windows 7 - 64 bit laptop!

I will make you a modded inf, all you have to do is download the latest nVidia driver from nVidia.com and replace one file, then it will install your drivers for you.
Give me 10 minutes to upload it here.

Ok, download the latest 275.33 driver from nVidia, run the installer and let it extract to where you want, then replace the nvwi.inf file in the Display.Driver folder (you will find this where you extracted the nVidia setup files during setup) with the one I have uploaded.
Then run the setup.
If it still fails, revert back to your older driver installation. Reason for this is because it seems to recognise your Device Driver Strong Name which is used by the nVidia installer to check hardware requirements.Attached Files:

Unfortunately, it did not work - but I can't thank you enough for the attempt; I even asked Alienware if a simple file needed modification, but they said no. Can I ask what you modified in that file? I couldn't see what was changed.
I should point out exactly what I did before I say anything else, to make sure I got the process right. First I should point out that I had the old Alienware drivers uninstalled, and the new nVidia drivers in already. I then looked to where I extracted the original file, in my C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\275.33\Vista 64-bit\International\Display.Driver folder, which is where I replaced the old nvwi with your new one. I then went back to C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\275.33\Vista 64-bit\International and started the setup there, and did a clean install with your modified file in that above directory (..../Display.Driver). That's what didn't seem to work - even after the computer restarted).
So yeah - didn't quite work out! But nonetheless I'm impressed that this is something we can work towards accomplishing, by simply modifying old nVidia files.
What else do you guys think can be done? Perhaps further modifications to the same file? -

Do not despair just yet.
All I did was add your Device Strong Name to the list of supported devices, it works for my graphics card so I figured it should work for yours.
Don't worry, I have another modded .inf you can try. I can't take credit for this one, I didn't make it myself but it supports LOTS of different graphics cards.
You should know, there is a whole website dedicated to what you are trying to do (force install the latest nVidia drivers because manufacturers are too lazy/slow to implement the latest drivers into their own driver install packages). I don't know If I can post it here, but that website has its own forum and everything so there would be more experienced people there to help you.
Don't believe alienware, you CAN modify a single file to force install. I've done it plenty of times before and so has many people.
If this doesn't work, please tell me

Oh, by the way you should have the drivers installed that gives you the old DxDiag output before trying to install the latest nVidia drivers. I think thats why it didn't work for you this time round. Try making sure you have the drivers installed that gave you the old DxDiag output, then try installing again with my modded .inf. If that fails, try the newer modded .inf in this post. Be sure to extract them and replace the old nvwi.inf in the driver folder!Attached Files:

I really can't thank you enough for the awesome, free help sir! But alas, it did not work again, even with the advice you gave in your edit
Funny thing to, because Alienware advised I do the same thing (to install it over the old, working drivers).
So what I did exactly was install my old drivers, then put your first nvwi file in the extracted area, then ran that setup on top - and that didn't work. I then uninstalled those drivers, popped in the old drivers, put in the 2nd new nvwi file, ran setup, and it didn't work again. Once I ran setup each time, I used 'Express' setup so it would simply update my drivers, and not do a 'clean install' like the Custom setup option would've allowed me to do. I'm assuming that's the right way to do it?
In any case, I'm back to square one. *facedesk*
I'll note that whenever I just installed the old Alienware drivers, everything turned out fine - so I can still easily get to where I was a week ago...but that's obviously not where I want to be. I just want not-two-year-old-drivers... In any case I think that shows all my hardware is essentially working fine, but this software situation is just a mess.
I looked into 'force install drivers' in a yahoo search, but the threads I saw (didn't find entire forums for it) all seem to just want to get a driver installed - not 'working'. My drivers have all 'installed' just fine, but the thing is, well, this is the error message I see when I try to open up the nVidia settings on the lower right: ImageShack® - Online Photo and Video Hosting . I'll also note that I get blue screens of death still on occasion when I try to restart the computer with these drivers installed (it talks about how dxgkrn1.sys is screwing up I think), as well as things like choppy web page navigation, an inability to start up Aero, and how dxdiag shows up with no display adapter still...so I'm pretty sure they're not working
So the drivers that have installed just never work, even with both those .inf file attempts I hope I did everything right though.
Starting to lose hope...is there anything else that can be done? Or is there something I could've done wrong? -

It should say 'Click here to download the requested driver' and 'Click here to download the modified INF file'. These are the links you want to click on. Download, extract driver, and replace the .inf, install
Then after that (if it hopefully installed), try the 275.33 driver from earlier, try both modded infs until it (hopefully) works.
I had a friends laptop that had the 9800M GT and I used that driver and it installed, so maybe it will work for you too.
Have you also considered updating your BIOS if it isn't up to date already?
Last resort would be to take it to the next level, and ask on the laptopvideo2go forums about this issue; it's their specialty, they will be able to help you more than I ever could

Thank you so much for your help sir! I shall try over there at that forum now - I couldn't spend your time any further here. Sadly, I tried to follow your every direction (and I do believe I have), and it still would not bloody work...flerg. Took a long time between all the blue screen's and copy and pastes and downloads, etc (see the following pic for the blue screen error: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/833/20110804230212.jpg/ ). I'll also note that when I installed that driver from that site, it seemed to go ok but once I restarted the computer I didn't seem to see anything like an nVidia control panel or what not available. Long story short, all the steps didn't seem to fix anything
Also the BIOS seems to not be updatable, sadly. I have the following:
