Ok the first thing first, I DO NOT EXCEPT ANY RESPONSIBLITY FOR DAMAGE OR PROBLEMS CAUSED BY USING THIS GUIDE.
I got about 10 request over the past week, on how did I overclock my CPU. So I thought I'd put it in a guide.
Note: ClockGen overclocks the FSB which means the entire system is pretty much "overclocked, the hdd, cpu, ram, gpu, everything runs at higher clocks. Just be careful that you do not overclock too high because the hard drives may not be able to cope and the system will crash and you might think it was because of something else that could not hold the new clock frequencies." You may want to just use Clockgen while gaming and then reset it for normal use.

First thing find a copy of Clockgen 1.0.5.X, CPUID seems to have stopped offering it. I would google it or hit the Torrents. Avoid toggle.com it is not the real version.
Step 1:
Start ClockGen. Click PLL Setup

Under Clock Generator Setup choose ICS 950405
Now click Read Clocks

Step 3:
Select the 10th Hexcode, in the figure it reads 7E. The Hex Value box under IC Dump will populate.
Change the Hex Value to 7F.
Click Apply Selection then Update Selection
!!!If the field reverts back to 7E!!!
Click Update Selection then Apply Selection

Step 4:
Close the PLL Setup Dialog
Click PLL Control

Step 5:
Click the CPU Meter
Use the slider in the Selection area and adjust it your desired speed.
I recommend the following settings:
CPU 2.0ghz change to 2161.25
CPU 2.16ghz change to 2333.86
CPU 2.33ghz change to 2424.94

Step 6:
Close the PLL Control dialog.
Click Options

Step 7:
Click Apply current settings at startup. This allows ClockGen to apply the new speed on start up of the OS.
Close the Options dialog.
Your DONE!!!!![]()

do you know if these processors are factory unlocked or will this clokgen work on any other laptop?

Yes ClockGen should work with other laptops as long as you have the correct settings. Some people use Memtest86+, I'm never tried it. -
hhmm, i would be weary and curious. besides synthetic benchmarks, have you tested this on a real world application? like say, render a video file to a specific out before the overclock, and then do it again and see if there is a performance boost.

The only testing that I have done is with 3DMark06 and UT3, both provided gains. Small but gains. I have around a 500 point increase in 3DMark06, but that maybe just based on clock speed and not exactly CPU speed gain. UT3 did give me about 3-5fps on average.
But this is just a guide, it is up to the readers to determine if overclocking is for them. -
so what exactly does this clockgen do? does it basically increase the front side bus so the entire system is overclocked? if the processor is multiplier locked, the only way you can increase it's speed is to increase the FSB of the system. this is what i remember doing when i was into building desktops and overclocking them back in the days.

I have no idea, maybe someone else can help. Their site did not provide much info on how it works. Most software developers don't volunteer that kind of info. But this is from their site back in May of last year:
"ClockGen is an program dedicated to overclocking. Its main purpose is to change the system clocks on the fly : FSB (Front Side Bus) and GSB (Graphic Side Bus). ClockGen also provides some functions that allow you to improve and monitor your overclock."

eightd, i will dwell into this clockgen utility after i recieve my m9750 and i will help you complete this guide. from your results that are posted on your guide, i am calculating that the FSB has been overclocked to 718.12Mhz from it's base of 667Mhz. this will translate to an 8% overal system performance increase.
the main issue i am seeing with overclocking the FSB on the m9750 is the ram and hdd because these two components do not have an active cooling solution. in other words, if there was a fan blowing cool air into the ram compartment (like the d900t has) you would get a more stable overclock.
having said that, i think the ram is the weakest link when using clockgen on the m9750. the solution for the ram would be to purchase the 800Mhz ram, allow it to downclock to the 667Mhz of the m9750's system bus once installed (all higher clocked ram downclocks to match the motherboard's FSB, anyway), then attempt to overclock as this ram can withstand higher clock frequencies than the standard 667Mhz ram, obiously. you should be hitting more stable overclocks.
i would also advise using arctic silver 5 on the gpu(s) and cpu and maybe even on the south and northbridge, depending on how this laptop is put together. i will know once i get it in my hands

you know what, i forgot about the most critical aspect of overclocking through FSB. when the FSB is overclocked it will require more juice from the psu. this is a problem for notebooks as the psu is fixed and you cannot upgrade. so, if you have a maxed out m9750 spec-wise, you should not be using clockgen UNLESS you test your overclock under full sysem load letting the test cycle non-stop overnight or something equivalent. i belive the total sustained output of the psu is 180w. if the system calls for more than this it will spell trouble.
symptoms of not enough juice from the psu vary from data coruption to bsods and reboots. now that this crossed my mind i will not be able to use clockgen because my laptop is also used for work and i cannot suffer data corruption.
but anyone that will be using clockgen should be running benchmarks (preferably the ones that test the whole system) non-stop overnight to test for stability. -
@ARGH - You are definetly right when it comes to a maxed out notebook. I saw that you have Raid 0 so you are probably taxing your M9750 power wise as much as it can go. I may try overclocking though since I only have a 160GB 5400RPM which probably consumes less power.
We will see how much more performance I get out of this.
Addition: @OP - Can you link up the .rar file to mega upload or something so we don't have to go through the torrents to get to it? -
actually the hard drives do not consume that much power compared to the screen and gpu. each hard drive consumes about 5-7 watts. the culprit is the gpu. each 7950 needs 45w so that is a total of 90w for an sli rig. this is already half of the power output of the psu. if you are running sli you should not be overclocking the fsb as you may face stability issues.
for serious overclocking you will want to get a more powerfull psu, like the 220w versions found on the sager d900 series laptops. you will need to rig the connector to fit your laptop. after that, you will need to get the 800mhz ram. then next step would be to correctly apply AS5 on the cpu and gpu's. get the best laptop cooler and keep a cool ambient room tempurature, relatively speaking. this will help address the increased heat from the higher power consumption and fsb overclock.
having done that, if you can reach a stable overclock of an 800mhz fsb or very close to it, you will expereince an incredible boost in performance. -
I overclocked mine from 2.33ghz to 2.5ghz stable with clockgen.. some things i notify.. i made a check at Ignore GSB/PCI... i don't know if they ignore it on overclocking or just on showing up. But i think it's better to not overclock GSB/PCI so for me it looks like it only overclocks the FSB RAM AND CPU but i don't know... Do mention is that a cooling pad like Zalmann is an great addition if u overclock....

1. Make sure you "Click Apply Selection then Update Selection" in that order. Clockgen doesn't seem to save the value unless you do.
2. run Clockgen as Administrator. -

Hi everyone I know this is a bit off topic but im sure you will all be glad to hear this. Ok now my other halves uncle is a bigwig at DELL and as we all know own alienware. The decision to decline the chipset upgrade possibility for the m9750 to support newer processors was turned down beacuse Alienware believe that they will not profit from it as people will now be more interested with the m17x.
Ok heres the interesting part, he assured me that if it was possible to prove that many m9750 owners would be interested in purchasing the upgrade, then alienware (or more likely DELL) would have to offer it as it would be another big profit turner.
So if we can collect enough names and details to forward to DELL (better DELL than Alienware because although they are still seperate companies DELL have the decision makers), then it is 90% certain that they WILL offer the new chipsets supporting SANTA ROSA. This would also solve many other of the chipset related problems including the notorious RAM issue. On a side note, it's "Update Selection" (second button in the window) then "Apply selection" (third button). Unless my ClockGen is odd; if you click "Apply Selection" right away it resets the value to 7E.

ok i need help i use the whole 7F hex value then click apply and the hex value goes blank so i dont know what to do or is this supposed to happen. im using the Alienware M9750 -
you use ICS 950405
then change the 7E to 7F, then update selection, then apply selection, then read clocks, after that you use the PLL control to increase your clocks. -

I'm having a problem with this overclocking thing. More of a question really. I have a m9750, intel core t7600 2.33GHz, 4 GB of RAM. When I run clockgen and initially just check the clocks, it shows that my CPU is running at 997.3. Like, every clock seems to be running at way less than it should, even before trying to overclock. Is clockgen reading it wrong, or do you think there is something wrong with my system? The clockspeed values are:
CPU: 999.3 (it fluctuates but minutely)
FSB: 166.25
RAM: 332.51
AGP: 166.5
PCI: 83.12
edit: also, when i try to change the clock speed, it just reverts back to the original values. -
Looks like you are down-clocking for some reason. Maybe your Mobile settings are dialing down the speed.

on the PLL Control setting part of the ClockGen i have the exact same setting as shown in the picture on the guide but the only thing that doesn't match is the CPU which is at 1077.17

so you're running at 1077.17 @ 6.0X (i'm assuming). this is to help power consumption and cooling, as the slower the CPU is running, the less power consumption it's taking, which leads to less voltage being supplied to the CPU, thus, less heat is being generated.
if you run a bunch of programs, your cpu speed should spike to the 12.0x multiplier and will run at whatever the full speed with the OC is. -
I am curios what temperatures you guys are getting when over clocking because I am have some temperature issues without even overclocking. Like when I run 3dmark one of the graphics cards reaches 89 degrees Celsius and apparently 85 degrees is overheating according to the guy that I talked to on Alienware. they think it is the heat sink but I honestly cant imagine why a hunk of metal and a fan the works fine would go bad. And unfortunately they were supposed to send me a new heat sink but I waited for a while and I contacted them and they are out of stock on my heat sink. I am also using arctic silver 5 and a laptop cooler and it still reaches those temps without overclocking.
