Was reading my email today and got the usual Alienware/Dell newsletter.
As I was about to close it, my eye caught a small detail in their description of the M17x..
"Available with up to 12GB DDR 1333 Memory".
Went to the M17x customizations and noticed a 12GB option wasn't there..
Thought I should post this here and digest your thoughts![]()
Here is a slice of the ad:

WoW thats useless and will cost almost a m17x
thanks though -
That's not useless!, cow.
BTW... 8GB modules?, that even exists? -
um 8 gig mod.s?
you mean 6 gig modules?
it is useless .... for me
and i am the only one i can speak for BOOO YA FAT MAN -
-
6gb modules doesn't exists... At least should not
.
I think it would be 8 + 4. -
I got the same email. i think 6gb of ram would be nice now, still waiting for prices to drop more
-
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
How can they fit 12 x 1GB sticks into that M17x?
-
Soviet - the randomness lord
-
i love soviets comments
-
I got the same e-mail, but the order page hasn't changed...

Bloody hell, I'm still running on just 2GB and now they're going to offer 12GB?
Who the hell puts this ram to use? Someone who wants to play about 10 games at once?
Even with the likes of CAD, 3D rendering and the such, I can't honestly see 12GB being put to use-or even 8GB-at least not to a point to make the price worth it. -

I know of physics/science apps that demand at least 16GB to more than plot an apple falling from a tree lol.... -
I'm the nerdy type that loves doing such tests xD -

Hey Scytus! I remember something called "Earth Simulator" that required 16GB RAM on a workstation, and that was back in the late 1990's!
There's a program called ESPResSo, that does matter simulation at the atomic and molecular level that can use 16GB also.
Maplesoft is a math/science app too, though not sure if it can take advantage of high amounts of RAM.
But I can't remember the name of the specific program we were talking about. It was a physics simulation app, and my friend said it was a notorious resource hog, but the school required them to use it anyway. He was telling me the workstation they bought specifically for it cost like $30,000+.... -
EDIT: ...where the hell am I gonna get that much RAM xD -

LOL....it should not be that hard with the right motherboard....high-end workstation-class MBs would have 4 banks, 4GB per bank....presto!!
Interestingly, talking about physics, in my view, thats the next direction for gaming innovation, incorporating more real-world physics in the game. Visually, graphics aren't going to get much better than they are now - on Far Cry 2 some scenes are almost passable as a photograph on my system. The shadows, the radiosity, the textures - all done in realtime at 40 FPS - are at levels I've seen my $4000 3D Studio Max 9 put out.
What we need now are true burning effects, real destructible environments, and other aspects of physics in games.... -

I hate maple....evil program....There is also Matlab and I think Active HDL can put a hurt on memory as well if you have a massive project.
Of course, running those on my new shiny M17x next to everyone else with their little puny laptops will be fun this fall haha -

if it's 12gb @1333fsb. the chipset should be able to take another ram increase of 16gb@1066mhz. or if it's still 16gb@1333mhz then it should be about to take 24gb@1066. and so on........
i would have to see what the Chipset is able to do. -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
odds are 16gb max on chipset, but I doubt even that
typically, in consumer level products, 4gb per dimm is the limit
and the bios is still going to be a limiting factor -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
well yes i saw that on the m1730. the limit was 4gb@800. then a new bios update made it to 8gb@667.
-
one time i did this drawing in MS paint that took 3 GB of RAM

I just used a desktop throughout my engineering degree... ate any laptop for breakfast
I mean I basically lived in the engineering building, it wasn't a big deal to transport lol.
-
This Ad is a mistake. The order page has not changed and if you check online there is no company yet making a 6gb RAM notebook size.
-
As for destructible environments/physics, I think 'Digital Molecular Matter' is heading in the right direction, with what they did for Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. [Tech Demo]
-
I would think it would be hard to make the mistake of writing 12GB in GIGANTIC letters.. lol
-

Haven't seen Digital Molecular Matter, but sounds cool.... -
if the thing can in fact handle that much I'm more inclined to purchase it, future proofing ftw.
-
The real question if this news comes out to be true is will it bring the current RAM offering price down?
-
lordqarlyn Global Biz Consultant
Probably a little, but I would not expect a HUGE drop....
-
-
He is right it "took 3gb of RAM".
-
the3vilGenius 3vil knows no fear
i think dell is smarter then doing something like that. It would be useless and looks impossible to me. Somebody messed up in their advertising bigtime.
-
Looks like marketing didn't check the dates with distribution prior to releasing the ad. I wouldn't be surprised if it's coming soon.
-
Most likely an error. Shortly after the XPS M1710 was released, Dell sent out a catalog and it showed the M1710 having a backlit keyboard. Dell stated the add was a mistake and no backlit keyboard was available with the M1710.
-
I got a Dell catalog in the mail the other day, and on the last page they advertise the M17X with the "Q9000 4.0ghz Quad Core processor" lol. I wonder if the marketing people ever look at the catalogs before the give the go ahead and mail out command.

It's a marketing error.
