So the first 30 minutes of having my new M17x my hard drive crapped out on me. The tech finally came to replace it today and after I reinstalled various drivers things have been going fine except for one problem.
The touch control buttons (volume, wireless, command center, etc.) either don't work (such as the wireless, command center, and stealth) when pressed. On the other hand the volume buttons work, except when pressed they don't give me the on screen display of the volume being increased and decreased, etc.
Along with that, the Fn commands don't seem to work either.
This can all be corrected with installing the drivers for the OSD from the dell support website. After I reinstall them, everything seems to work perfectly. Though when I shut down the laptop and restart it, things go back to the way I previously explained.
Does anyone have any idea how to correct this problem?

Sorry to hear you are having problems with your machine. After reinstalling the OSD drivers, we will recommend to contact our technical support to assist you on updating the bios which should correct this matter.
Thank you. -
I have some questions... And it sounds like the Mobo may be having issues more than drivers related things, since you have a clean HDD and fresh installs.
I talked to another owner here on the forums and he just got his m17x less than 3 weeks ago.. He had a issue with the optical drive not functioning for BRay... He called and they are sending him a complete new unit since he "owned it less than a month". He was pleased with this, but I wonder about the turnaround time for a new system.
Did you have that option? Or decide to have them come to your home to fix it, which it seems to not yet be resolved to satisfaction?
thanks ;-)
Still on the fence about what gaming notebook -- lol
AW warranty/ CS is my biggest concern along with initial qualtity control.. -- many seem to have little hardware problems when they get their machines from what I read here. -
When I removed the OSD app, the command center and the Stealth buttons quit working.
The eject, volume and wireless one work. On the wireless button you may have to press, then press again, as it cycles through enabling disabling wireless and blue tooth...
I re installed the OSD and they all started working again..
I really don't care to see the OSD as it causes some problems and is flaky... -
So I updated the BIOS off the dell support website. That went alright. But it did not fix the problem.
Though I didn't call tech support because I don't feel like dealing with them after all I had to go through to get a hard drive replaced. Though I have a feeling that's what I'm going to have to do.
And no I didn't get the option to get a whole new system. I even asked the tech support guy when we were diagnosing my problem with the hard drive and he seemed to not even consider that an option. -
That really seems inconsistent to the other buyers situation that got him a replacement. Could it be you have a different type of warranty, I wonder? -
different reps will help out more or less
Dell is the best for warranty repair -
Moo, that is a concern.. Ddridz probably is rather ticked right now.
I would hate to think someone who is having a bad day or decides they don't like my voice has that much latitude in decision making to screw me over on a 2-3 thousand dollar purchase. It's what is keeping me from clicking
" add to cart" -- and I really want to new notebook soon. -
every one i have talked to was amazing overnighted every part
now i never needed a replacement system but i know Clauss got one because his keyboard lights wouldn't come on
unless something happens NBR can solve it ..... and as far as issues with the Laptop i have had none that weren't my fault
ALSO the ratio for people who are just here to talk vs complain or need help is like
90:10
which is why you see so much bad stuff, look @ me Scook, Mandrake , Quadzilla and others.....etc and see what we have to say not every one else because most of the people aren't SUPER experienced with computers ( no offense guys)
(M17x) on screen display problem
