I don't personally care what you do. When I use my driver cleaner software, though, there are more than a dozen files that are still sitting there.

all of which are probably overwritten by a new install!

Trying my best to avoid another stupid argument.

Why do those driver cleaning programs exist then? When a forum member is having driver problems, why is the first question that generally gets asked "have you done a clean removal of the old driver"?

how do you arrive at that conclusion?

me personally, i always use driver cleaner and ccleaner when installing a ne driver. now, i don't know if they actually improve performance, but i'm figuring that they certainly dont' hurt performance, so why not run them?

not many files are generated from the install... most are copied... so they had to come from somewhere...

Driver cleaning software are there to make sure there are no remaining remnants of the driver left after it has been uninstalled. It's to ensure that the process of installing the newer driver is done on a clean slate. Drivers will still work regardless of whether you do or do not use a driver cleaning program.

Whether the newer driver will be completely stable is another question! Stability issues may arise in the event that a file left over by the older drivers are used by the newer drivers or by programs that explicitly utilize files from that driver. Though the chance of this happening is unlikely, people tend to freak out regardless just thinking about it happening, so that is why there are driver cleaning software.

I think most (if not all) of the NVIDIA drivers have files that are contained in one executable file first. After being extracted into one folder, the files are then copied over from that folder during the installation (and/or are generated by the setup executable itself.) That's my guess.

that's what i'm playing at the whole time. it just seems like the safer option IMO to "build" the driver on a perfectly flat surface rather than a pile of rubble left over from the last driver ;)
