it now has an LG Philips LP171WU3-TLB3 screen which is nowhere near as nice as my old AU screen was..
Kindof upset but what was I expecting.. it's AW customer service after all..
I think I might just bite the bullet and get a TLA2 and install the darn thing myself.
boo on AW.

the screen install is not that bad for the M17, be happy you aint got a M17x you don't like the screen in

Not sure what screen I had in mine, but it did suffer bleed and lack of colour richness/depth. Glad you got your machine back working though mate
-
Glad to hear you've at least got a working machine, unlike Alex.
What are they going to do about it, Alex, if it isn't working? You really should either demand a replacement equivelant M17x, or take legal action against them.
I'd still stick with Alienware-just the Dell Alienware rather than Alienware Alienware, if you see what I mean. There's a big difference. -
I've had major issues too and have got a refund on my original M15X and have to admit that I've ordered the new model through Dell and the experience so far has been much better. I'm a little concerned that Customer Support will still be through the Bratislava call centre though....

Since Dell is in control now things seem to be going much smoother

I would be willing to accept a GTX280SLI/4870Xfire M17x but I doubt they're going to offer me that; and I wouldnt accept anything less as I lose out somewhere (I lost PCM HDMI audio just going nvidia).
If you have an M17x issue, do you talk to Dell or Alienware, I know with the M17 you speak to AW. -
As far as I know, M17x issues are handled by Dell.
You should really be willing to accept 260M SLi, performance is on the same lines as the 4850s or just a bit less but look at the great machine you're getting as well-overclocking in the BIOS, better build quality, great cooling, more lights, better screen, etc. That's just my opinion at least.
That's the thing about the M17x; it's now completely Dell who are reputed for having superb support. If they do offer it to you, I'd go for it-although I can understand why you'd want to avoid Alienware altogether. -
well the 4870's are not available in the uk for the m17x
but anyway he should get 280s as the 260s are a downgrade and they should offer equal or better gpu performance tbh -

I do agree the M17x has its benefits (lights isn't one to me, I actually like subtle); but the loss of PCM audio over HDMI which I use (If I'd bought it at RRP, my AV setup is worth best part of £4k [$7k], although I spent a fraction of that by buying offers, second hand etc) and slightly slower cards would curtail that benefit for me, at least if I opted for the Kobalt I'd gain another HDD bay, and similar cooling benefits etc, and Clevo/Kobalt seem less likely to mess me around on upgrades, they'll either say yes or no.
Im a big audio person, so the reported issues of sound latency/stuttering issues are also a downside to me.
Will have to see what they come back with though, common sense responses so far have been suprisingly absent -

yeah congratulations Maximus on getting your machine back.....forgive me for asking a dumb question but how do you tell what sort of LCD panel it is?? without opening up the machine that is?
I dunno whether its just me but I love the screen on my M17 to death....but I havent really seen many other notebook screens tbh.
Alex, If I was in your shoes I too would be pushing for a M17X with 280SLI because as PMAN says it has to be equal or higher performance and the 260s from what Ive heard are less.
I could imagine Alienware playing funny buggers over this because of the fact you would have to get it from Dell.....any excuse you know how it is.
And yeah....still no 4870s in Europe but as Mandrake says doesnt mean they dont have them yet....worth asking! -

Its all on the table; I just need to see what happens, and what I can get, if I get a refund fine, if I get a massively discounted M17x with new warranty and SLI 280s/4870s (260s at a pinch, thats really going sideways/down in my mind as slightly slower and less features I'd use), also fine

cheers maximus!
are you gunna update your sig? or are you not finished yet? -
I hope Alienware will still update M17'S BIOS and drivers...but it seems unlikely...
-
You can still get updated Catalyst drivers for graphics, and mod them to work with your M17.
- Just got my m17 back -
