I've got the back propped up and I'm still getting 92C max temps.. room temp is like 75F..

What's the best cooler money can buy for the m17? I want this thing to last me at least 3 years, don't think that'll happen if it's constantly running this hot

    Thanks guys

Also, I'm looking all around the computer and realizing that I don't see any air intake vents.. just some small slits in the bottom, but the top left and in the back are the only places with vents and the air comes OUT of those.. weird?

The slots on the bottom are the air intake vents.

Open the notebook and clean the fans/heatsink with compressed air (this is something you must do every now and then if you want your laptop to last 3 years); also replace the termal paste on the GPU(s) if you know how to do it, or wanna learn how to.

first part is a facepalm because he just got it like last week

the second part is right on the money because thats is the problem

you need to replace your thermal paste

also open the bottom of your laptop and remove the black cloth over the vents it hurts more then it helps with dust

Just replace the paste Maximus and report back . Sometimes they do an awful job applying it and it can make for very hot cards . My cards after hours of playing on the M17 only hit about 83 with the back propped up .

The fans wont be blocked up with dust since the machines a week old :).

yeah I just ordered some AS5 and some Arcticlean to clean off the old paste from newegg for $15 with shipping, I'll replace the paste and see if that helps a lot before I get desperate and remove the dust pads from the vents

    I'm idling at 60-66C :(

AS5 is ok for the GPU? I did some googling and some people advised against it because it's conductive and that it should only be used for the CPU?

    Thanks for the responses guys

AS5 is fine for the GPUs and people will advise against it since alot of people are sloppy when applying it . OCZ freeze is what im using at the moment but ive used AS5 a million times without issue. My GPUs idle in the m17 anywhere from 53 to 59 . If i have been playing games for along time they will idle back down to 59 and usually stay there . From just a boot and never playing a game they sit around 53 .

So with the cooler and the AS5 I'm going to be looking at say.. less than 80C on full load? that's my goal

Even with a cooler i wouldnt say less then 80 honestly . Maybe if you used the machine with no cover on the bottom you could see those temps . I also dont know how much hotter/colder the 4850s are compared to the 3870s. Remember temps on the GPU can vary from game to game .

I'm getting about 77-80 max full load without xfire enabled.. maybe I'll just do that till I get the paste, every game I have runs at 40+ fps on just one gpu!

these 4850's really do kick butt :)

Btw, anyone else removed the cloths from the bottom vents ? Been thinking about it a while now since the dust they gather on them is pretty much impossible to clean. So im guessing as time goes by the air flow will decrease.

Though not sure if its better to remove and have the dust get into all the parts in the system :p

I didnt have any cloth on mine at all but i got mine from a member here and he also drilled some additional holes for the CPU and GPU.

the cloth will lower it about 5 C

the holes will help 2-3 c

    the reapplying hould help 5-10c

the 4850 under full load should only hit 82-89c which is safe for the cards :)

You seriously need to get some new paste on the cards. I do think that's most likely the problem, as has been said before AW doesn't always do a great job on paste. Get some new paste on those and it should drop to 90C or below which is safe for the 4850s.

well, read project freeze is all I can say dude...

here are my temps on whitebook after some mods, new paste, holes, NZXT Cryo LX:

After a few vantage runs, that is idle at 37 and load under 70

I believe those were with AS5 although might have been OCZ freeze. They gave similar temps for me but the OCZ freeze is easier to use.

I actually had alot more mods planned but sold before I carried them out, was too lazy for the massive amount of grinding/sanding that would have needed to be done haha.

Here is what I had planned:

Never made holes for 2nd GPU like planned either.

Bloody hell. How much copper did you add on top of the copper that was already there o.o

Where'd you get those copper heatsinks? It'd be interesting to see if they helped even without drilling any holes.

    Newegg haha

Swiftech 8800GTX ram sinks and the enzotech copper sinks, the shorter ones. Enzotech has a pretty good list of stuff you can try to get into a laptop and newegg carries most of it

This is what I have to play with:

I have another 8 of the group on the bottom left, that was only 1 box of the 2

I will still have all of these in case I get bored with my M17x since I never used them on whitebook hehe

My only problem is that Newegg is a US company. I'm in the UK. ;)

I don't think I'll bother seeming as 1. my temps are fine already and 2. I can't overclock my processor any further anyway or I'll bluescreen and it already maxes at 80C when overclocked.

Ya the mods I did do weren't NEEDED for my whitebook, but they certainly were welcome haha (and the GPU's really enjoyed them in particular)

Considering my GPUs only hit 82C max anyway and I don't plan on overclocking them I don't think they need them either, heh.

From my experiences overclocking my desktop 8800GT, it doesn't bring a huge benefit. (I only do it because it's got tons of headroom, it runs cooler than my processor for god's sake, thanks to an uber Zalman cooler) Besides once I've got my 4850s, I'll be able to max everything out at 1440x900 anyway (seeming as they get nearly 30fps average on Crysis maxed at 1920x1200) and no I don't plan on upgrading the screen ;)

I have never actually measured the performance gain in games for an OC on GPUs haha, I only benchmark. I always game at full stock settings haha

But is always nice to know what your system COULD do ;)

read project freeze for any questions regarding cooling. it seems that we need a mod to move it to the alienware thread since no one has an ocz no more.

Quick question, i think someone said that you cant use paste on the NB because the height from the heatsink is a bit too high. Anyone found a solution for that or people are still using pads ? And if pads is the way to go does changing them to another brand like this one give better results ?

You can use metal shears to cut the copper sheet. Or if you want a nice clean cut, you can take your copper sheet to any big hardware store like Lowes and they'll cut it to the size you want. Just make sure you lap the copper after you cut it.

The KGB is watching you, scook9.
