Will Alienware ever make notebooks with 16:9 screen? I prefer 16:9 as it is great for watching movies.

True but with 16:9 screen, you will see less black bars and hence less space is wasted for the black bars.

I thought the 15.4's already were. What ratio are they in then?

Just checked, 16:10 apparently, near enough for me.

Other than it being a standard HDTV resolution, I see no point in 16:9 screens compared to 16:10. Black bars aren't a big issue as some make it out to be. When you watch a movie in normal conditions (lights off or very dim), the bars aren't even noticeable.

But apparently 16:9 LCDs are cheaper to manufacture than 16:10, which maybe why more notebooks are popping up with them...

ichime is correct, the only reason we have 16:9 screens is because they are more economical to manufacture.

@OP: no one outside of Alienware's engineering/product development department knows.

It's not so much the visibility of black bars that bothers me, it is the amount of space wasted by the black bars. For a 1.78:1 movie, 11.1% of screen real estate is gone with 16:10 screen, compare to zero percent with 16:9 screen. For a 2.35:1 movie, 47% of screen real estate is gone with 16:10 screen, compare to 32% with 16:9 screen.

Put it another way, a 16.4" screen is just as big as 17" when it comes to watching wide screen movies.

Did anyone ever think of the fact that you may lose viewing room with the 16:9? Either it will stretch the screen more or it will shrink it. I hope it's not like Bioshock for the 360 because that would suck :(

Anyways if its the latter AW probably wouldn't do it as AW's are made for gaming.

I hate 16:9 with a passion. I have used it before, and you feel so squished and confined when you use IE or Office with it. You truely lose some work estate with 16:9 resolution.

Quite frankly black bars don't bother me at all, and a laptop is not suppose to be your main DVD player.

I can agree with people wanting it for films and possibly games, but for any type of office work its a bloody pain as you cant review anything you've done, Whizzo's right there.

I don't think it will stretch the screen if you set the video driver control panel to maintain aspect ratio. Otherwise, all the games originally created for 4:3 screen will stretch too but that is not the case.

Unfortunately for me and others whose living space is very limited, laptop is my only DVD player. I don't have TV. I don't have the space to have them both. My laptop is also my only newspaper as I hate to pile up papers in house. They become an eyesore. I do very much everything with my laptop.

Not all movies are 16:9 either, many of my movies on my HD DVD player will have black bars on the top and bottom.

I'm not fond of 16:9 resolutions either but 16" sceens make for just the most perfect sized laptop.

If only someone would find a way to squeeze 2 GPUs in one.

Well the exception to this is if the game doesn't support that resolution but you're right I don't think that it would be too big of a problem at all.

Well If you use VLC you can right click>video>aspect ratio> and change it to your preference.

I do this for most movies on my laptop when they seem stretched.

I mean an Alienware notebook with a screen that has 16:9 aspect ratio. Most notebooks have 16:10 aspect ratio.

Well, if Alienware adopts the upcoming Clevo M98xNU chassis in the future, then that would be one...

VLC media player allow you to set default aspect ratio at 16:10 and thus, no more letter boxing of your movies, only full screen which looks just as good.

Is Alienware even still using Clevo chassis now that they're a dell sub. and I would think FPS gamers would like the 16:9 for the extra FOV.

I think it's because of the space they would loose for the hardware by changing rom 16:10 to 16:9 ...

When you open the m17 dislpay you see a black, don't know how I should explain, "spacemaker frame" around the LCD ...

I mean ... the m17 has a large "space to lay tha hands on" ... sry for my horrible English :p wich makes mutch space for hardware ... and that is what we want^^

Like one of the first posts:
    Alienware =/= watching films
    Alienware = playing games => Crossfire + Raid .....

    Greetings
    Julian

    Edit:
ok but I like 16:10 more than 16:9 even for gaming ;)

google and download media player classic

open/Drag a movie on to it, or play it straight from dvd using that player.

Go to 'View' or right click on the screen and go to 'Video Frame' then select 'Stretch to window'

There now all your movies/videos wont have bars unless the video itself contains black bars, in which case even with the 16:9 screen you will see those bars. Then your option would be to crop

you will NOT need to go through the process everytime.
