    Hi guys,

I am really gutted, only just picked up a 17 r4 today 7820 + 1080 combo, anyways repasted took my time etc..

Then realized I missed off 1 damn LCD cable and it's basically taken out the EDP connector on the motherboard, is anybody specialized in fixing these if I had a donor board, happy to pay really gutted :(

Never done this before - must be Christmas and all the damn rushing about

Guys - do you know any wizards who are good at repairing/resoldering?

I always get a little nervous soldering connections so small that I have a hard time seeing them well. I am sure that I could probably do it if I absolutely had to, but I would try to find someone that does it every day with their eyes closed. I haven't ruined anything in my SMD soldering adventures yet, but I'd hate for the first time to be on something owned by another person. I really need to practice soldering on electronics destined for the dumpster.

Is there a way I can force the laptop to boot and bypass the onboard monitor I'm getting 3 bleeps right now then 2..

Would be cool if I could bypass the screen for now and use external display while I wait for replacement connector? Do you guys have any ideas if I can make this happen please ? @iunlock @DeeX

I don't know who in UK can do it. I'm sure there is someone that can. I do not remember where @t456 lives, but I'm confident he has the skill. The only people I know of in the states that can do it (and I am sure there are many others that I don't know of) are @Khenglish and perhaps myself.

That's not a difficult replacement with a heat gun. You'll definitely want to use a heat gun to remove the damaged connector. You'll then want to make sure all solder pads on the motherboard are tinned with solder using an iron and flux. After that you can use an iron or heat gun to put the replacement connector on. I recommend a heat gun. Preheat the board with the heat gun to reduce the chance of overheating the replacement connector.

thanks, guys - appreciate the feedback - calmed down a little now.
I have been in touch with somebody that specializes in micro soldering in the UK - they mainly do Ipads etc now but said they can sort this no problem at all ?

Just waiting for the parts to arrive and then hopefully she can get fixed

Not 100% certain, but I think what he might be referring to is none of the solder pads are torn off the motherboard and the PCB is not damaged (which could ruin the motherboard). Of course, that is a "lucky" thing in spite of the unfortunate accident.

Happened to my bros AW13. Soldering that EDP port takes extreme skills but eventually that motherboard died. Replaced with a refurbished one.

Just be careful when removing the EDP connector or when inserting the connector. I would have attached a screen shot but i am in a hurry. What I wanted to point out of that if you look at the the "first image you posted. The top and bottom has these grey squares on each side. The gray means the pads where ripped off with the connector. These two pads keep the connector EDP connector..trying to find the. right words... it basically holds down the connector. this being said you you ever need to seperate the cable from the connector BE SURE to gently pull the cable away from the connector in a parallel motion, basically DO NOT accidentally lift the EDP cable to disconnect the cable. Sense those 2 pads were ripped off with the original connector there is no solder to hold how the replaced connector. The only thing holding the connector down is the data/power pins. If i did the job I would have felt bad and used a special epoxy on the both sides of the connector so you would have to worry about this again. but that i just me. I assume she is trying to run a business and only does the bare minimum so that unit works. This job probably took here about less than 10 mins to do. it is a very easy fix with the right soldering technique and the right tools.

I am really happy you got it fixed though! congrats! Also dah Mr.Fox was correct when i mentioned "clean-pull" the pins' pads were not ripped off there board. it would have been a much more serious job to get the connector to work if the pads for the pin where ripped off.

AND AGAIN CONGRATZ!!!!!! You did a great job breaking the connector, it could have been worse and so you are one luck person!

Hey man, just stumbled across this post and I see that you were able to fix this problem!

I recently disassemble my 17 R5 due to my fan making a lot of noise. I pulled out the EDP plug and it ripped off the little prongs on the motherboard lol! May I ask which part you were able to get and how you were able to put it on the board?

Where do you live? Are you in or near a big city?

If you have any electronics, TV, or radio repair experts nearby, they probably have the right tools and experience, or can point you to someone that does. It is not super difficult for someone with the right equipment and some experience with SMD soldering.

Just had the exact same thing happen to me while changing out the fans in my m17x R5. Really unfortunate, especially since I'm working from home full-time these days.

Anyone in the U.S. have recommendations for getting this repair done? I ordered the part from eBay, so once that arrives I'll need to find someone to do the repair. Unless a repair shop might carry an EDP mobo connector like this, in which case I can get the repair done sooner.

In the meantime, anyone have any luck getting your system to bypass the embedded display and boot with an external monitor? I tried plugging one in the HDMI port but no luck thus far. Having the system functional in some capacity would be extremely helpful, at the very least for getting my data off of there.

I'd truly appreciate any tips or advice from others in this thread who've gone through this already. And happy holidays to all. Thanks.

I did the same cleaning the dust out of my son's 15R3. Didn't notice the six tiny screws (not in the vid I watched) holding the heat sink to the fans (which are connected under the MB) trying to jiggle the MB the heatsink and the rest of the laptop I pulled off the EDP.

I saw this thread and got the connector off eBay. Thank you MrFox!

I'm in the UK and got

SmartFoneFix to sort it. They are UK based

I sent the whole laptop DPD next day. The same day it arrived with them, they emailed to say the connector was replaced and the laptop tested and working. I paid paypal and three days later had it back
    BRILLIANT!

My Laptop is an ASUS ROG GL703GS it replaced an ASUS ROG ZX753VD (i7 1050 version) I like the 17.3" screens

There are different places that can fix, it ultimately depends on how bad the damage is.

If the connector is quite badly damaged , you really need to find a "micro soldering" specialist - some phone shops can do micro soldering but do your DD before sending anything in.

Looking at the thread i posted a while back with the ebay link, they have sold over 71 kits now.. must be a common issue.
