I thought as long as it is 2.5 inch it will fit in most notebooks that have a 2.5 inch bay.....The M17 and M17X does!

It's 12.5mm thick, which is thicker than a standard 2.5 inch hard drive, so only fits in some notebooks.

As noted, the WD 1TB drive is 12.5mm thick; the outright majority of notebooks can only accommodate drives up to 9.5mm thick. That said, I believe someone managed to get one in their M17x though it required a bit of modding. Let me see if I can locate the post.

    Edit: I found it - see post #19: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=407338&page=2

I think there was an older thread I remember seeing asking about another 12.5mm hard drive for the M17, and I think the answer was no it doesn't. Sorry.

Right I see,,,,,the majority of notebooks are only 9.5 thick.....Im gutted.

Im sure a 2.5inch 9.5mm 1TB HD will arrive eventually and when it does I will be waiting.

    thanks guys.

Have you thought about external hard drives? You can get a 1TB external HDD for less than $100. I mean, you are using this for your M17x, which isn't a really mobile laptop. By all means you may move it from place to place, but if you have a workstation, nothing beats external HDDs. You save $150 off the 2.5" 12.5mm.

Given you live in the U.K. so the costs might be different. But for the OP, this might work.

I believe that's an oxymoron? Besides, wouldn't the addition of an external HD make things even more cumbersome?

The point is the M17x is a desktop replacement laptop, so if you were hard up for HD space, an external HD is not a bad option if you don't move it around constantly. I have an external HD for my M17 to store the stuff I don't use all that often.

Why not? I use my M17x as a mobile unit all the time!

    How mobile though?

I would say use the external HDD for things you don't often need, but how many people have a terabyte of things they don't need?

I've got a 50meg internet connection... I could fill up a terabyte fast. I just went through and cleared out about 300GB worth of stuff off my M17x today... and I haven't even had it for a month yet.

Sound ideal for portable video editing (CS4), where external drives are either too bulky or slow :)

Try removing some pr0n guys - you might free up more space /grin

I wasn't saying that I need all this space or that I'm even going to try this out in my M17x (which I don't even have yet lol). I was just curious if this was possible
