I've just received my M17, and the HDD and clicking is on constantly; even without any activity. I've only installed one game so far, updates are set to off, I'm not scanning for anything (atleast not that I know of), restarting hasn't done jack and my running processes appear to all be legit.
Suggestions? Any HDD tool out there that can police this?
-
do you have indexing turned on or off?
(not sure if this is an issue, but just something i thought of)
and in comes E-wrecked.....(or Mystik, or Whizzo, or Oceanus....)
-
Anyways, it's really pissing me off... -
i had this issue with a couple of these (ocz version) and i ended up honestly doing a full re-install of vista and not sure why but that fixed the issue.
but lets all try to fix yours first..
first off do you have raid? (i dont think you do judging by your sig but figured id ask anyway)
can you tell me what procc's are running at startup (if you do not know how ill be happy to help you find out)?
is it doing it from the time it hits windows then stops after a while or is it constant?
do you have any hardware you installed? like a printer or anything?
etc... ill help all i can but i need more info -
ArmageddonAsh Mangekyo Sharingan
that really sucks man i hope you can get it fixed
im getting the OCZ the only thing i like about the m17 is the lid -
100% agreed ^^^ love the lid on the m17

This is kinda what happend to my m17.. HDD was going nuts when i apparently installed applications or sometimes when i did nothing.. I ended up having to the ship the machine back to AW because they could not figure out why it was doing it.. essentially it would slow my system down things would get choppy and overall slow performance when the HDD was accessing all the time.
-
Have you tried reseating it?
-
For some reason, it appears to be shutting up now. The good thing is even though it was accessing, it wouldn't hinder my performance at all; strange, or maybe 'cos it's running on the battery.
Anyways, I will keep this thread updated. I'm currently at work, so I'll look into this further when I get home. -
lol, this is probably a vista thing.
Windows Defender... which is a background application for security and virus scanning, will want to do a full system scan. not to mention the indexing service will want to index EVERYTHING.
I'm guessing that if you left it alone for a few hours, it'd probably stop doing much of anything.
You can also check your performance meters, it'll tell you which processes are using which major resources (CPU, RAM, HDD, Network). find it under administrative tools, called "Reliability and Performance Monitor".
enjoy. -

It's vista thing, dont worry about.
It goes away after awhile. And there is automatic defrag goes on in the background too. -
I hope it'll keep this way, otherwise, I'll be sure to post some further details. -
sounds like then it may have been the prefetch vista uses running. possibly the defender thing but i hate defender.. lol one of the first things i disable on a new install.. i recc a good av instead
-
thimk your making me get scared here .......i thought we were in this together
-
Turn off Vista Super Fetch, thats what it is.
I went nuts also on my 1737, now my HDD light never turns on unless I do some activity.
indexing is also pretty useless. -
ALL: What's this Windows fetcher? -
As they said, it's Super Fetch.. if you go into Vista's Services under computer management you can disable it. It basically "learns" the programs you access the most.. it's another form of indexing, and it will keep your HDDs spinning the first few days, once it realizes what you access most, it organzies the information so Vista can access it quicker in order to speed up your computers performance. I've always disabled it after booting Vista for the first time. So, I can't tell you if it works or not. But, just keep your system defraged with a program like JKDefrag, and you won't have to worry about it. SuperFetch is aka Pre Fetch.. or Vista Indexing.
It's your call, it won't harm anything and may help.. but I don't have first hand experience, cause as I said I always disable it.

I don't think there ever be enough +rep on these forums for you. -
lol.. I just spend too much time on the forums, so I am usually here to lend a hand. No biggie. Glad to be of assistance
-
How the heck do I kill it?! -
lol.. click start, then type "msconfig" in the search box and hit enter.
Go to the last tab on the right - "Tools"
Click on "Computer management" then click "Launch"
Now dbl click "services and apps" then double click "services"
Scroll down to "Superfetch" and right click it. Click stop
Then right click again and properties. From the dropdown box choose "Disabled" then click apply, and Ok.. Now it wont load at boot, and shouldnt spin up your drives anymore. -
Thanks again for the suggestion, and it appears to have improved. You're friggin' rad.
Will keep this thread updated. -
Dont be worried if your drives still spin once in a while, it happens.
but, they wont continually spin for no reason.
-
-
Eventually it will.. your oils from your hands will settle in and make it slide.. even if you clean it, the oils will soak in a bit and let it slide nicely. Give it some time
Congrats on the rig! Now, install some games and go to town on it! -
well that answered my question lets hope mine doesnt have this issue
-
-
Thanks for posting the information about superfetch. I have been having the same problem and have disabled it. Looks like I might have to disable the other feature you spoke of too.
-
So just to summarize what I did:
- Disabled indexing for the entire drive and sub folders by right cicking my C drive and hitting Properties
- Disabled the Indexing service
- Disabled the Super Fetch service
I also just let the thing just run over night, and it's real quiet now.
Thanks again to everyone for the kind suggestions! I would otherwise be feaking out still, or yelling at AW tech. support if I didn't have these forums. -
