Which one do you think would be a better investment? Which will affect performance more?
-
I'm hearing allot of people getting the crossfire. My self would love an SSD but they are way too expensive at the time being.
-
What performance? If you are talking read and write times then get the ssd if you are talking game wise then get the 5870.the ssd will not make much diff in gaming except for load times.

CF 5870 + 320 HDD now, then upgrade to SSD when the prices drop & use the 320 for data storage after the upgrade?
-
Just get an aftermarket momentus xt and you will live

Megacharge Custom User Title
I'd take the 5870's in Crossfire, and as Mexican pointed out, a Momentus XT.
-
Get the 5870 in CF and buy a cheap SSD on Newegg or on the NBR section of this forum!
-
The ONLY thing the SSD will help with is basically all-round loading times. Windows will boot faster, programs will load faster, games will load up faster, but it won't improve performance beyond loading times.
The Crossfire 5870s is the way to go. The performance difference is vast compared to a single 5870. PLUS, while you could get both a second 5870 or an SSD aftermarket, buying a second 5870 aftermarket would be far more expensive than buying it with the laptop itself.
So, buy the Crossfire 5870s now, and buy an SSD later when you can get one and/or when they come down in price. -
Personally I would wait till next year for SSD's. Technology is increasing so quickly that the more SSDs that flood the market, the cheaper they get. It took a while for 1TB HDD's to drop, but you can pretty much get them for $100 now.
256GB SSD's are bound to to drop. We'll soon see 1GB per $1. Next year is what industry experts tell me (and thats for like Intel makes). More like $300 for 256. -
Definitely add an SSD later on.

SSD Later GPU CF now
-
Have to thank all of you, decided to screw the SSD and get my self a CF laptop.
-
A year or two from now, assuming you don't change the machine out, I think you'll be very happy with that choice. SSD you can get later and install with few issues. GPU's are often "forever" so to speak. Sometimes you get lucky and can manage to change out the GPU's but most of the time you get what you get. HD's are changed all the time and easy to do really.
300GB X25-M's are my leaping point. Having done the whole raptor 74's and 150's in desktop machines, I've come to want a minimum of 300GB before I consider that worth being a primary drive. 600 is nice, but 300 is minimum.
CF 5870's are desktop level power in a lappie. Nothing but gaming bliss for years to come. -
- SSD for traveling and if your a student.
- Dual 5870's for gaming
- Its always easier to upgrade a HDD then an graphics card.
256 SDD or Crossfire 5870
