I did what most owners do and ordered my m17x with minimal RAM and Hard Drive space. I've upgraded the RAM to 4 GIGS, what kind of hard drive is in the M17x? I plan on ordering the drive from New Egg but I dont know what im looking for. Right now I have the single 160 Gig 7400RPM drive, do I need to order another 160Gig drive to be able to run it in RAID? Thanks.

No, you do not need the same HD to run raid. But to my knowledge, which ever drive is slower, it will run at that speed?

BTW usmc eh? semper fi. im in africa right now. serving as an ariel gunner on the ch-53s.

if you set up RAID with two drives that aren't equally fast, the faster drive will artificially slow down to match the other. kinda like what happens when you use two different RAM sticks for dual channel.

on a side note, are we non-military types allowed to make all those manly "ooorah" sounds to show our spiritual support for the armed forces?

Thanks again for the info. The occasional moto Oorah from the CIV DIV is good to go, its only anoying when a civilian yells hooah or someother moto call that isnt ours.

Ok, so I should get another drive that is 7400rpm or higher, can I get a solid state drive? What is the type of hard drive I should be looking for? Example, there are different kinds of Lap Top RAM ie DDR, DDR2, DDR3 ETC. Is there a certian kind of lap top drive that I should be looking for?

hard drives come in two different flavors, IDE and SATA, the latter being far more common nowadays. the m17 uses SATA as well, so that's what you want to look for. make sure it's a 2.5" drive (HDDs come in three different sizes, 1.8", 2.5", and 3.5". the sizes are used for PMPs, laptops and desktops, in that order).

Ahh yeah, its getting hot as . The other day it got up to 121 at lunch time. Today we flew to Ethiopia and normally the wind is actually pretty cool, but today...it was ing hot wind...?? haha and there were some other guys riding along, one of them, a sgt, puked 6 times hahahaa ahhh i loved it.

but anyways, hows Iraq? Do you know anyone that works at MALS-26? I know a few people over there right now.

And yeah, Solid State Drives are quiet and have faster start up times. They use less power and cause less heat. Theyre more reliable because there arent as many moving parts. There are some disadvantages, like cost and that flash-memory cells will often wear out after 1,000 to 10,000 write cycles for MLC, and up to 100,000 write cycles for SLC.

    As per our KB,

Make sure that the system is equipped with two identical hard drives to support a RAID configuration. Click here to learn how to install a hard disk drive on the Alienware Area-51 m17x mobile desktop. Since the hard disk drives on the Area-51 m17x are SATA drives, a jumper configuration is not required. Hope this helps.
