Realising I had left Street Fighter IV V-Synced, I also turned that off, and got a new score at 1280x720 of just shy of 17000, with an average fps of 141. I can only presume the game is CPU limited, as I then tested at 1920x1200 and got an average FPS of 136.

Have my X9100 installed and happy at 3.325Ghz, along with my Scorpio Blacks and have re-pasted the CPU/GPUs. These results are taken using the new 9.8 Catalysts.

*********UPDATE 2***********
Right guys here we go,some extended benchmarks from DMC4 DX9, DX10, SF4 and also a re-run of FarCry2 in Ranch Long, set to Ultra High mode![]()
I did try to retest RE5 under DX10, and it appears ATI *HAVE* corrected the poor performance in the benchmark there; however there appears to be some instability with the driver at the moment; as my graphics/the benchmark froze up part way through each time. THAT SAID, in the phase 3 where I was running at 30-25 fps in DX9, I was running 45-60fps in DX10...MASSIVE difference, so in a driver revision or two; I will try again, and they might have fixed/optimised the DX9 performance by this point too![]()
These ATI Cards are VERY good at allowing high levels of AA at playable framerates!

*******UPDATE*******
Hi guys, as promised, I have re-run the RE5 benchmark once I got hold of new drivers. I can happily report the bug withy RE5 is now completely gone; the bench/game now not only runs better than before; but in DX 10 compared to DX9 to boot!

For any interested; Im using the new 9.8 Hotfix drivers![]()

mmm, what about a Devil may cry 4 and the resident evil 5 benchmark
Far cry 2 as well
-
Alexrose1uk Music, Media, Game
I've got that DMC bench somewhere, I'll try and dig it out. RE5 and FarCry 2 shouldn't be an issue if I can get hold of them
-
You can download the RE5 benchmark (for free that is a bit over 500mb download i think)
so only need to look for the far cry 2
-
Pretty sure you have to buy FC2 for the bench, but it's a good bench. I don't think anyone with CF 4850/70 has tested them either.
-
If your M17 is coming now with 4850s that's at least a good sign that we will get an upgrade.
I'd like Crysis benchmarks and Vantage personally. -
Alexrose1uk Music, Media, Game
Hmmm, seems there might have been an early version of the FarCry2 benchmark tool released outside the game; but there were a few bugs so it was withdrawn.
As I'll just be comparing before and after scores; I'll see if I can find it via torrent.
Im also grabbing the RE05 benchmark, SFIV benchmark, Uniengine Tropics 1.1 and the Cinebench V10, to add to DMC4 bench, 3dMark06 + Vantage, the Crysis benchmarker (and I think Warhead has one too) and for the sheer LOL factor...Aquamark 3.
I have an appalling internet connection atm so these might just about be done in time! -
vantage ASAP

Anyone know if theres a bench/premade demo tool for Dead Space, remembered my mate gave it me as a thankyou and it could be quite good as a tester!

pm email address. please. i'll show you a trick or two. i know this thread is going to get flooded very bad and i won't keep up.
farcry2
3dmark06. it's a old dead benchmark but i want to compare it to the 3870x2. also i can't wait for you to get your x9100. i wish you got the qx9300.
dmc4 is a inportant one. you must beat the 280m lol.
vantage is tricky but you should be able to break 11k.
there's more but that's off the top of my head. -
alll the benchs and programs you need are here

Haha, I have most of those already; it's the main GPU benches I really intend to run though; I'll possibly leave out Farcry(1) simply because its so old; and the only other game that uses the original CryEngine is Aion.
We all know my CPU score is going to be relatively low as Im not going to overclock that (unless I get bored) until I swap the X9100; the QX9300 simply wasn't worth the hassle for me; lower general overclock, slightly better multitasking; some issues with the M17 and stutter et al, and 98% of my programmes wont use those extra cores right now. Throw in it costing me an extra £100 for something thats going to be slower for the majority of my use and possibly cause issues; then...well I really CBA lol -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
the x9100 is going to work just fine for you, don't worry
right before I decided to sell my whitebook I ordered an x9100 after the stutter frustration with my qx9300.....haha
now they both will get tested in my upcoming m17x! -

Haha, well looks like I'm gonna have some fun tinkering around with this black swan of the Alienware family; although drivers and hardware will be.
Sorry I didn't come back with anything last night, some benchmarks took almost 2 hours *glares at PCMark Vantage*
What the other guys have noticed is correct; the stock drivers don't seem to take full advantage of crossfire [vantage seems to show improvement, whilst 3d06 doesnt]. Both are listed as working; but there's not all of the extra oomph you'd expect. That said; what is there is pretty decent already; and rivals my desktop 4870.
Aquamark refused to run; possibly because it doesnt like 64bit OS; that said I ran everything ELSE on my list except FarCry2 and Crysis, as I didn't particularly want to waste time installing everything only to wipe off later when I knew it wouldn't be the optimal show off for my machine.
Here's the initial test results run as the machine came 'Out Of Box' <All programmes run at default settings and resolution; bar the exception, programmes were set to run fullscreen where windowed was default>:
-
Alexrose1uk Music, Media, Game
I've also just noticed that as of this morning, Mobility Modder supports the 4 series.
It doesnt mention 4850X2, however the IDs seem to be the same as a normal 4850, so before I fiddle around the machine I will likely try DNA (9.4 or the latest whichever?) vs Mobility Modder (9.7) vs normal 9.7s with tweaked infs manually installed vs AW. Testing with vantage and perhaps one or two quicker others for comparison. -
Definitely need new drivers. Your scores are no where near where they should be.
-
Alexrose1uk Music, Media, Game
The CPU deficit will be doing some of that. ATI cards have always appreciated some processing grunt behind them, but yeah, I think theres a good bit more to come. That said; the Vantage GPU score wasn't terrible.
Im working long shifts the next few days so I'll get this sorted as and when I can -
Alexrose1uk Music, Media, Game
Hmmm bizarrely Im still getting the same GPU scores with Cat 9.7 mobility modded (06 rose to just over the 11k mark; which suggests its still not really fully using the second GPU.)
Perhaps this is something that will only be fixed with a fresh software reinstall; and Im heavily being held back by the CPU.
That said, the GPU score of 9000 in vantage is fine by me, especially if that averages across my games; as it puts me in EXACTLY the same place as a 4870 desktop edition; exactly the sort of performance I was after; anymore is a bonus!
Oh, and I'm running the drivers on balanced not performance mode. -
9K in Vantage with a notebook is definitely using 2 cards. Drivers obviously will heavily influence the score.
-
The 4850's and 4870's have shown themselves to be CPU dependent, so 9k is about right. I believe a stock x9100 was getting 10k with 9.4 drivers?
-
Alexrose1uk Music, Media, Game
Aye the Vantage score is absolutely fine; Im just a little baffled on 06, given Im hitting the same as Marshall is when he figured he was hitting single card, but meh...tis an outdated benchy so doesn't worry me too much.
-
"Im just a little baffled on 06"
Your sm3 score is very good, it's the sm2 that is cpu dependant and the CPU score that is making your overall score low. Overclock the P8400 to 2.6 with Nvidia system tools and you will probably get 13k + -
Do you have the newest hotfix update for 3dmark?
-
Alexrose1uk Music, Media, Game
Aye latest version fresh download from the site.
What can ye do? hehe -
lol sounds like how i work alex
That 3dmark06 score is lower then i got with a p8600 so i think is definate work needs doing with the drivers for the 4850's
The vantage score isnt near the 280's either which is dissapointing
it seems like a decent update for the m17 tho!, be interested in things like crysis and COD5 benchies, get away from those artificial benchmarks
Re5 would be good too
Marshall, did you get yours firing on all cylinders yet? -
Alexrose1uk Music, Media, Game
Well the 4 series were never much of a jump from the <desktop>3 series in 3dmark06 anyway, as it loved the architecture either way, the 4 series improvements were in areas that mattered to games [like AA resolve]
. Im thinking once I get some juices going CPU wise, and perhaps do a little tweaking here and there (GPU overclocking...I'll have to see if theres a tool that will), this thing is gonna fly (more than already)
I unlocked the sync rate on Street Fighter IVs Benchmark last night... got me something like 17000 points and ran at 150-200+ fps all the way through (bar the spinning area where it was 100+) at 1280x720 haha
From Marshall's testing, it may actually be that with a fast CPU, these cards really benefit from the tweaked OS that is 7. Seeing as I've got the free upgrade I'll be trying it as soon as it comes out
If Marshalls 16k 3d06 is anything to go by anyway!
I've actually got Crysis/RE5 benchmark etc here anyway I just don't wanna run them til Im happy with the laptop config
Both a little NV centric unfortunately, and COD4 doesnt have a benching tool. -
I can prob help you with oc'ing the cards if you need
Mandrake's 17x scored around 10.4k at stock i believe, the cpu change wont really change the gpu score in vantage, it will of course increase your 3dmark06 score. I scored 16600 on my m17 with 3870's, but we all know it is heavily cpu infulenced.
Problem with vantage is i still refuse to pay for it
The SFIV bench is good tho! i think i got about 80 something average with oc'd 3870's so thats a nice improvement.
Be interested to see if it can match the 280's oc'd
but i agree for the price its amazing
although i brought my m980 for the same price i paid for my m17 -
a higher clocked dual WILL increase the score alot in vantage ... its why i can't beat mandrake in vantage
quads for 3dmak 06
duals for vantage -
Alexrose1uk Music, Media, Game
Hides on internet at work, because only a mad person works on Sundays
Part of the quest for CPU speed, is that actual, in comparison to NV cards, ATI cards do actually scale a bit with the CPU behind them, the drivers seem more CPU aware/dependant than NVidia, which I've noticed for a couple of years (oddly enough the 9.7 drivers even list one of the improvements as higher framerates in cpu-choked areas, so I can't be the only one who's noticed this trend, which they're now working on)
Vantage will do 1 run for free each key; although I have an advanced code from a graphics card I bought for my brother haha
Im really happy with the power I have in front of me; I was never expecting it to facepalm the 280Ms as they're basically 9800GTX repackaged so a little faster than the 4830; but for something that cost 1/4 less, and comes with roughly 10% less performance...well its a clear price : performance winner; and is about where I expected it, within a stones throw. (So far this setup has cost me just under £1700, which is less than you paid no doubt; hell that's the OPENING price for a UK M17x... and I wouldn't have got a Blu-Ray if Id just ordered; so saved another £200!) -
YUP 11.4k recored on the GPU's with overclocking
-
Alexrose1uk Music, Media, Game
Its a nice score; I won't say elsewise.. *goes to find 2K of GPU grunt from...somewhere*
Not worth the extra £500 to me though!
I could build another desktop for that haha -
no on the Asus w90p with the dual 4850's
M17x is 12k+ -
Alexrose1uk Music, Media, Game
Same still stands, not worth the extra £600 or so, I mean without the blu-ray this machine'd have cost me under £1500, and a similar M17x is £2100 or so here!
To be fair, the 4870s used weren't much faster than these 4850s (extra 50 on the core and 80 on the memory I think, neither have GDDR5 [wonder why, I thought it was meant to use less power!]), so I wonder how much overclocking potential there is (without unduly reducing the lifespan). Should have had a look at the ram chips and tried to trace the rated speeds -
DUNCE !!!!!
the 4870's were 4850 chips with a small overclock
thats why we have compared them .....

Gah I'd forgotten how slow laptop internal drives were for data. Trying to install Crysis Warhead at up to 4x DVD speed isn't fun! Taking like 30mins +
-
get a SSD
or go home -
Alexrose1uk Music, Media, Game
It's not the HDD thats the problem, its that Im having to install this off a DVD-DL when the blu-ray drive only reads those at 4x max (approx 2.5mb a sec...or less!)
DAMN LAPTOP OPTICAL DRIVES!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! -
i would be very interested to see much of the gpu score increase with a more powerful cpu
depends on the bottling threshold with the change in CPU, if they are too heavily influenced then we might as well be running 3dmark06
so it looks like the 4850's are pitching somewhere between the 260's and the 280's
looks good for the 4870's then -
Alexrose1uk Music, Media, Game
It shouldn't be a problem in real world terms in the large majority of cases; oh, and btw I just re-ran that SFIV benchmark at 1920x1200 and still got 14211 points and an average of 134 fps, if you did get about 80, I'd say thats a pretty substantial showing of the power of these chips; especially when you consider I have a 2.26Ghz P8400 right now
