Drake like i said awhile ago its lonely at the top . John was unbeatable till this machine came out and he still holds records on the 9262 that no one has beat . He spent more time in other forums then the sager one because he wanted some good competition and he pushed others into really getting the most out of there machines including myself

The only thing special about my system is the x9100. Anyone can beat my scores if they just put the effort in.

I'm even getting the QX9300 to do more direct comparisons.

Lol not sure what to say on that one . i spent some time as you know getting my CPU stuff straightened out then it was the GPU issue, then right around all that time i got this m17 and i have just been so busy this summer in general i just didnt have it in me anymore to keep pushing the envelope so to speak. I was burnt out before it all began lol. In a month or 2 when my son go's back to school im sure everything is going to change again. Single parent 14 year old son with Autism aint easy as it is and our summers are packed with things im trying to do to make him happy and myself as well :).

You can't beat John in Crysis because of the drivers. He was using some old ones like 176.xx I'm sure... those won't work with the 280M period :p Dox 182.46 would be your best bet... just a matter of getting a stable run in, Crysis doesn't care for overclocking. He got 48 FPS on DX10 high @1680x0150, I got 33 FPS, so I'm happy enough.

Problem is that his overclocked GPUs were are stock clocks lol and when we overclock were still not seeing it . i went from 27.4 to 30 with a decent GPU overclock on the test . Mean while my W90 was 29 with only a 50 mhz overclock on GPU and mem .

Ati does better at very high, Nvidia does better at high.

You've done Crysis runs with the QX9300 yes? It will make a pretty big difference at very high from the P8400. Seems the high number of distant objects puts a toll on the CPU.

One of the first things i did was run crysis when i threw in the CPU and no performance difference other then the benchmark was smoother lol which is all quadcores are good for in crysis sadly.

Morning guys, I haven't been able to check temps as they don't seem to be reading in anything, am wondering if thats why GPU-Z and GPUTool seem to enjoy crashing out every time I even load them to look. After GPUTool crashed last night, by chance I also noticed that in vista with a black background, if I place my pointer over the side bar, and it brings up the shaded panel, there's a bit at the bottom which is notably distorted (whether I put it left or right); almost like its trying to do some shades of grey/black and the TN panel just does NOT like it.

Well, this is a bit cack...looks like my screen has a fault, and Im gonna have to RMA the beast :(

I've tried with a respawn, and without drivers (which made it even more obvious), but theres an area of the screen that just isn't behaving 100%, its only minor but it'd annoy me and worry me that it could get worse :(

On the plus side, this screen has a fair bit of backlight bleed, so perhaps a new one will be better.

Ya these are very nice laptops. Even though I sold mine, a part of me will always miss it (as my first high end laptop)

I was actually contemplating selling my desktop today since I will have such a beast laptop......(but never will haha)

Hmmm, well after a bit of hunting, it seems what Im experiencing is actually an ATI/Vista SP1/2 thing rather than a screen defect. Reason I've come to that conclusion is that if I lower the res, the area of distortion increases (which suggests software), also having looked very hard, its present on some other screens with other pcs using vista in my house; however its much harder to see on them, probably because the black levels are lower.

Im guessing that its a visual artifact in the vista sidebar transparency effect; however as this is a fairly bright/washed out screen in comparison to some, it makes it stand out much more. This is further reinforced by the fact turning the screen brightness down 2/3 notches makes it much less noticeable. Have to say, I think the screen itself is probably the weakest and most dissapointing thing about this M17!
Im glad the AW tech told me to try and get some photos/videos before they'd issue an RMA, or they might not have been able to do anything; as my camera battery needed to charge giving me time to look around. Windows 7 is looking better and better if it solves this issue for me :)

Hopefully, I have nothing to worry about then!

Oh and I've ordered my X9100 from Shirley, along with some OCZ Freeze/cleaner (as I'd run out, and my remaining tuniq mx-2 is getting on a bit!), my mate paid me back last night so was able to top up my bank balance :D

Hardly uses any resources when you don't run much from it ;)

It's a problem particularly with the sidebar/vista, as I say, seems to affect a few PCs I've got so Im not bothered anymore.

BTW Scook, if you flashed the ZFactor BIOS onto yours; did you have to do anything special? The CD obviously doesnt work since the B14 BIOS from AW, and whenever I try to make a USB loaded versions; Im getting errors, originally when I loaded phlash16, it reported no bios found, so I changed the name of ZFactors bios, and now it reports it cant flash with memory managers (himem) loaded. Don't suppose you saw this at all? Im a little wary about just trying things when its the BIOS at stake :D

I did the usb method as detailed in zFactor's sig. I had to enter the long string and not the simple phlash16 command. Everything you need is detailed in a file that came with the BIOS. Sadly thought it did not seem to change the OC result for me....still couldn't get past 3 GHz on my qx9300.

Tried his as well as the one from the Killer Notebooks site for the Nagamaki (one of the only dam things that is open to everyone there haha) The KN one was easy to use, just burn ISO to a disk and go. People have reported getting good OC out of that BIOS as well

I managed it a little while ago (couldn't get onto here at the time :(), used Z Factors USB boot guide (incase it was different to others I've read), then seeing as the old ISO used to work, but wouldn't boot anymore; I copied the contents across from that; but stopped any files being overwritten, and seeing as the USB drive didnt have any issues being booted to, it worked absolutely fine.

Hehe, probably won't help me just yet; but I figured I may as well install it now whilst I have a chance, I doubt it'll make any difference until my X9100 reaches my desk (should be here in the next week providing Fu/EMS/Customs don't lose it on the way to the UK.), but Im looking forward to the day where that arrives. My fresh tube of CPU gunk and cleaner have been ordered as my old paste is getting old, and might turn out to be unusable, and the cleaner is because another mate of mine borrowed my old set and didn't return it with more than a drop left haha

Once I've got it, I'll see how much hotter it runs than this p8400, and go from there...hopefully I'll be able to push the multiplier up quite nicely, and then if I feel like it I can tweak via setfsb, will all depend on the chip and temps though, I'll no doubt be pretty happy at stock; but these 4850s do seem to respond to cache and core clocks sooooo :D
If I could get a hot running q6600 to windows at 3.8 (wasn't stable but hey), I'd be out of my mind not to try clocking the extreme aka overclocker chips, especially as these QS chips are meant to be pretty damned decent.

Im hoping it'll get through customs and it'll pass through without me getting an invoice for import tax too mind!

If it can't be bought domestically, no tax should be allowed (at least that is my opinion haha)

Aye, I've used EMS before for a Meizu M3 and also for my HeadDirect RE02s, I think they're pretty much the largest external mail company in china.
Last time there was a delay with them, took about 3 days longer and this wasn't EMS's fault, it was customs at coventry holding onto the package longer than expected, thats why I didnt bother paying extra for the UPS delivery; as they're just as likely to get held up by the muppets in customs, Im guessing Shirley may have had this before as it even says it may take longer to non-US destinations!

Did Shirley give you a tracking number, Tony?

reading through the thread some where zFactor shows how to make it helped me. For example the "Bootable DOS" files of the stick are hidden, so if you show hidden I think you can see them

yes Ive been tracking the parcel since last Monday. It took nearly 3 days just to get out of China then disappears for a couple of days until it was handed over to customs at Coventry over 48 hours ago.

Your probably right....just customs holding things up.

About that ATI FirePro M7740, that has to be an r770 based gpu (HD 4800 series). Pictures also have shown it as being mxm 3.0

    That bodes well :)

800 means it could be 4850 or 4870 or 4890 if we are comparing to desktop parts

Not familiar with a 4860 (doesn't exist just speculated?)
