Nice find, probably they got bored of people calling them all the time :p Or they had problems with the cards, which doesnt seems like the case since 2-3 people have them in the forums and they are happy with them.

4850's are still listed under the Tech Specs on the UK site (in fact they're listed as the only dual graphics option).

Lots of reasons why the cards aren't listed on the order form ranging from simple erratum to the cards are temporarily out of stock. I wouldn't sweat it too much.

Thing that worries me is that CS said to a few people that the cards will be available in two weeks. Thats this week starting from Monday. And i doubt they will actually offer them this week, seems like they are avoiding the whole issue.

Hmm, if they were out of stock you would think they would just put one of those "May delay your order" highlights on it. I will say this, I got my M17 yesterday with 2x4850's and the stock setup from Alienware was not what it should be. Crossfire was not enabled and in fact it could not be enabled. You would get an error anytime you tried. The 3DMark06 score for my machine was 12,897, which is less than the 3870's.

It wasn't until I installed the 9.7 mobility modded drivers that the 4850's started to work correctly, so I'm guessing they may be trying to work out the software details so that the cards actually work as intended when the computer ships.

Or it could just be an errata. :)

3dmark score is negligible IMO. If you want to compare cards check Vantage, 4850's get almost double the score of the 3870's.

thats a little strong cool ;)

i got 7k with them and 4850's get about 9-10 from what i have seen ;)

it could well be an error, but it seems a little strange to be honest, they would normally put will delay your order on them, not remove them altogether

Not sure if the processor has anything to do with it but with my T9600 cards score about 5.6-5.7k. And from what ive seen most users with the same cpu (since ATI are cpu dependant) score around 10k :p So thats "almost" double the score :p

Ps: Im talking about GPU score not overall. You actually got 7k GPU score with 3870's ? :p

I realize 3dmark06 is out dated, but it's still relevant when a pair of 4850's shipped from AW can't perform as well as a pair of 3870's. :) My point was, in my case at least, they shipped the box without crossfire working at all and perhaps in the UK they are taking some more time to get the software right.

Actually, the first ones to get them around here have already set us up quite nicely. Just get the official 9.7 (or upcoming 9.8) driver from ATI and use mobility modder to install. They work great!

yeah but Alienware wont ship them and say well to get them to work you have to use a custom unsupported driver, are they?

Yeap thats the only reason i still got 3dmark 06 installed at the moment. To verify everything is working fine :p But as for comparing systems seems like Vantage is the way to go for now. Of course you could do exactly the same thing with Vantage since you could use the score to see if crossfire is enabled or not :p

As for the cards, i will probably wait till the end of this week, probably till Friday morning and give them a call (again :p) to see if they got any news about the cards.

Yes, I'm getting about 9500 in Vantage with crossfire enabled using 9.7, which is about what I expected. I didn't even bother running it with the stock drivers because I knew they were lousy.

yeh so the 4850's are a little behind the 280's at stock, about 1k.

Which is exactly where they would be placed compared with the Asus model.

With all the confusion with the 4850's i wouldnt want to be waiting for the 4870's :p

Just run Vantage again cause i couldnt remember the GPU score (thought it was 5.5k-5.6k which apparently is 6.5k-6.6k) :p Got a 6592. So if 4850's get 9.5k-10k thats 50%-55% increase :p

Hi guys - first time poster and AW UK buyer here. I was wondering if anyone knew anything about what's happened to the 4850s, since I just purchased my m17 before they removed them from the site last week. I've contacted support three times from three different email addresses and phone numbers, all to no avail? Can anyone enlighten me, i'm beginning to worry :(

Atm there are no upgrades, but its looking more and more like they will release them, its just a question of when. As far as contacting support, what happens when you call? No one picks up? or you are just left hanging on hold?

Mine aren't being ordered as upgrades, they are actually part of the machine spec I ordered. Contacting support, I rang the number and got through, but got told they could not reconnect me due to 'a technical fault'. The guy then provided me an email address, which I sent an inquiry to. I got a reply saying I should forward it to another email address, have done and that's as far as i've got. I also sent a message to '[email protected]', but have had no reply from that either. But I won't get my laptop for ages anyway, as apparently they've run out of RAM as well. And they've already taken the money for it as well!

    I wouldn't worry too much.

Things have been known to disappear and reappear on AW's configurator.

FWIW, I think they are having supply issues and decided to drop it from certain regions. Just my opinion, of course :)

Just to let everyone know what's happening with the 4850s - I finally got through to someone this morning, and my order is all fine and has 4850s as far as the guy could tell, but he also said if they had been removed from the page, Alienware was probably making some alterations to the system? I have no idea what he meant by that, but could be bad news for you guys waiting on upgrades!

Yeah - just a bit of a bummer I have to wait until the 24th for progress as Alienware have RAM stock shortages :( i'm hoping everything will be fine then! It would be nice if I could get it before college on September 1st (ordered on the 11th, so fingers crossed)

Pft. Well I took a chance and called AW to check if I could upgrade my vid cards and the lady said I could so I ordered them and when I got my confermation email, the cards were for a desktop and she also had my billing and shipping address wrong. So I'm the phone as I type trying to get it straightend out. Sheesh
