I was thinking on get one 4gb module to get 6gb together right now I have 2gbX2 sticks total of 4gb but the price for the module is 450 dollars  is worth that much for the performance I can get or not?

no it is not worth it. Unless you are running very specific applications that you would already know about, you should never need more than the base 4 GB of memory

Probably not for gaming. It may be cost effective if you do a lot of rendering (3D apps or professional video editing).

If anyone ever asks this question the answer is always no. You would know if you needed more memory.

I haven't seen more MEM use then 3.x at the moment, so my guess would be that 4GB is more than enough. And if you dowant to upgrade, just wait.

But it's a bit dependant on what apllications you are running.

Aye, I could actually use 8GB right now for some of my applications (with certain combos Im pushing towards 5GB just from a combo of two of them!); but AT THE MOMENT, 4GB SODIMMs have a massive price premium. Once they're reduced in price I'd actually recommend it, not only if you become more demanding on your PC, but also because Vista/Win7 superfetch will actually use it to enhance your day to day experience, and I know I will look in this direction if it becomes viable during the lifetime of my laptop.

use of a good ssd will greatly reduce the benefit of something like superfetch (it will actually need to be disabled for best ssd operation)

Actually, I'd disagree with that. RAM is still vastly faster and more responsive than an SSD (SSDs typically have a response time of approx 0.1-1 ms, whilst RAM is on the order of 10-100ns), Win7 release (as in not yet) is meant to incorporate some tweaks to better utilise SSDs in this regard, and in general. Not using unused RAM is a waste of capacity and capability, as well as being a massively good idea for traditional HDDs.

Superfetch is a supplementary technology, and there is no real reason it should be disabled; it's one of the best things about Vista/Win7

oh, I may be wrong but I thought super fetch was one of the programs that caused unnecessary stress on the ssd (extra read cycles)

I am still new to SSD's (don't even have one, but am planning on one)

It could increase read cycle usage, but then the read cycle average lifespan on a good SSD is pretty damned high these days; you're talking several years of 24/7 constant usage IIRC, a far cry from the early models or some USB drives; only reason Im not getting one is I'd prefer to wait until the tech is a little more mature; and prices have dropped.

    gotcha

The dell 256 GB ssd (same as corsair p256 but much cheaper) is close enough to a reasonable price and size that I am very tempted haha, as soon as I can afford I am gonna get one

I cant remember which SSD Dell use, but I believe its a model running off the Samsung/Corsair controller, and is actually pne of the better ones. Just too expensive for me to justify right now or I'd have considered a 2x SSD RAID0 setup (which would have flown).

yes they are both all samsung internals - corsair just puts their label on it (much like dell is)

I am looking at 1 ssd and 1 500 GB drive. RAID is overkill for me and much more expensive

I dont think Dell make much of thier own stuff so thats not exactly surprising they rebadge haha

Im looking forward to SSD becoming cheaper though; I mean faster; quieter and more shock resistant drives definately have a place :)

Seriously how many threads have this questions, this forum should be giving out warnings for new people to learn how to use the search function. Or get some mods to group all the threads together.

It's always going to happen. Just have to be patient and accept it. You know how many times I've had to repeat the same response to a given topic in the XPS M1730 Owner's Lounge??? lol. *sigh*

hey BatBoy while you are here, wanna head to this thread and see if you can help this guy mod some nvidia drivers to add 2560x1600 res support for the GTX 2XXm cards. You are someone I have seen to be competent at driver modding :)

He wants to drive a 30" Apple display using M17x (can this be done? - needs dual link output)

M17x have display port so you can use it natively or buy an adapter display port -> DVI-D.

And i think that the HDMI in M17x is 1.3b which let you use an adapter HDMI -> DVI-D (not sure if the HDMI is the 1.3b one btw).
