    Hey folks,

Did a cursory look, couldn't find a similar thread. There's something in OCZ but it's not thorough.

So, many of us likely considered upgradability in our buying decision of the M17. I understand at this point it's all rumors. However, I'd like to hear from those of you more in the know than I. Thoughts on the likelihood that the M17 will take the 4k series ATI cards? Do you think it will be a simple swap?

If you know of any articles or threads, please link what you have. I'm sure we all would like to know as much as we can about this.

The possibility of slapping two 4870's in Crossfire in with my QX9300 has me up at night :D

it's definitely a possibility. biggest issue i see is the 4870 cards drawing more power and/or requiring different MXM connector slots. i seem to remember something about the m17 having two different MXM slots (one of them being over-the-top, so to speak), so you might only be able to use one 4870 card.

    all speculation though.
two HD4870s in crossfire, DDR3 RAM and a QX9300 definitely would be a beastly setup though :D

i think Chaz closed the last one because it was "purely speculation" :D

    i might be wrong though.

Well, it depends on how it's phrased. ;) This one can stay open.

    Thank you Chaz :)

    Any other folks with information/opinions/links?

I've scoured a few sites and can't find much. Can anyone confirm whizzo's point about differing MXM slots? That would be an unfortunate setback.

This is really why I decided to buy one of those refurbished p-7811's until the 4k ATI cards make it into the M17...then I'll be getting myself one :)

... or some good brandy ;)

there are four or five MXM slots right now... the biggest of which are the MXM III, and the MXM HE, the HE is the same physical size but has 2 extra pins. there's also speculation about MXM IV, but I don't know if it's been finalized or used yet...

the likelihood that they're not both MXM III or compatible, is slim, considering the immense bandwidth of the cards... I know they're both PCIe 8x in the M17, so the chances of at least one of the slots being MXM II is present.... MXM II is a physically smaller card than MXM III/HE but has the same 230 pins as the MXM III, so, in theory, could support the same bandwidth...

This is all speculation right now, since I don't have an M17, nor know anyone with one to really say one way or the other.
