Can anyone please help me? I have seen an Alienware M9750 on Ebay for about £400 UK.
    Specs

    RAM: 2048MB PC5300
    Max Supported RAM: 4GB
    HDD (rpm): 120GB (7200)
    GPU: 1x nVidia 7950GTX 512mb
Optical: DVD +/- RW with Lightscribe Tech
    I/O: 4x USB, 1x DVI, 1x Analogue, Firewire, S-Video,
    Networking: WiFi + Ethernet
Op Sys: Windows Vista Home Premium x86 + Product Key
    Display: 17inches @ 1400 x 900
    Battery: 1x 6-Cell Li+
    Other: WebCam, HD Audio

I am really tempted to buy this for my sonfor Christmas but i am the first to admit i don't know much about notebook specifications. I want a notebook he can play modern games on, watch movies, use internet etc. I have noticed that this M9750 only has the single graphics card with the screen resolution @ 1400 x 900. Is this good enough to display good graphics and run games such as cod 4 etc smoothly or, am i about to waste my money on something that isn't going to be able to cope. I know there are much better spec 9750's out there but this is looking much more affordable. I will be extremely gratefull if people could help me out here. Also will he be able to burn cd's/dvd's on this. Thanks in advance.

Alienware computers tend to be a bad deal overall if not bought straight from alienware just for the simple fact that warranties are not transferable. If the laptop ends up needing service which it is highly probable Alienware will not be responsible for repairing. With that in mind it seems like a very decent laptop that could play good games if configured correctly.

I own an m9750 and it is quite capable of running most games smoothly with the 7950 gtx even without sli. I don't know what the exchange rate is now between the British pound and the US dollar but it sounds like a reasonable price for this system. And yes it will burn both cds and DVDs.

The warranty won't be transferable (if it's even still in effect at all), but this seems to be a pretty good deal for the price, even not considering that it's an Alienware (which makes it a bit better of a deal, as Alienwares tend to be a bit more expensive than the average laptop). I have less powerful video card (it has about 60% of the power as the 7950 GTX) that can still handle Call of Duty 4 pretty well, so the 7950 GTX will definitely run it smoothly. The other specifications are pretty good as well - not top-of-the-line but certainly good to run anything out there today and run it decently well. And as Loggie said, it will burn DVD's.

I'd say, especially if your son wants an Alienware of M9750 in particular, go for it.

fusionsenses, what do you mean? As far as I know, Alienwares have decent reliability recently. I see no reason to believe it would break down particularly soon.

Thanks so far everyone. I'm willing to take the risk on reliability. It's the specs i'm concerned about.

nope, i have m1710 with 7950 gtx, I need to turn down resolution to play without too much frustration. But if you want to play competitively, then 7950m gtx is barely enough. Now i am using x300 9700 gts, this is enough at 1440 resol.
