    hey guys,
ok so im selling my m15x so i can get an alienware desktop and im gettin the new core i7 @2.66.
im having trouble deciding on 6 or 12gb of ram.
is 12gb just unnecessary? also saw somewhere that having 12 can cause problems when overclocking the cpu?
i would like to overclock the i7 to maybe 3.2 or something.
    what are your thoughts?
    thanks

12gb is ridiculously overkill. 6gb will be more than enough.

Unless you're going to be using virtual machines, 12gb of ram is highly unnecessary. Even with 6gb, it is an overkill for most gamers.

if money is not an object and status is..get the 12....i bet you would then be the only one on the block with a 12G AW system for sure.... :D

Wow, if you do not see money as an important factor, get the 12 GIGs, though I wonder how you could ever use 12 GIGs sans Virtual Machine.

I myself would go for the 6 because:
    1- I'm sure 12 is very expensive ;)
2- The speed of ram is more important than the ammount.

In the futer more ram will be necessary but currently not many programs/games can take advantage of that.

Getting 12gb is a total waste of money if you are not using every bit of it, even if you dont buy it from AW. And right now you wont even use all the 6gb either.

The machine will be old well before you find that 12gb app.

Also is using 12 gb possible?
As I read in other news that the max you can get is like around 6.7 gb in 64 bit windows because of chipset limitations so how can one use 12 gb???

    He means ...
    "will it work?" => Yes
(he also means: it's not a windows problem its a chipset problem^^)
    ... go with the 64bit windows and your m15x (or m17x ... a.s.o) will give you 12gb^^

    Am I right whizzo?

    Greetings
    Julian

First of all, the OP is talking about a i7 desktop not the m15x or m17x.

Secondly, yes the maximum RAM that can be used by notebooks is 6.7GB due to a chipset limitation. Who said that applied to desktops?

Also, the m15x or m17x can't even have 12GB, julian. 64 bit windows can theoretically use 128GB of RAM, while 32 bit can use 3.2GB (barring chipset problems of course).
