    Hi there ;)

My 2 sli cards are dead So I decide to buy a new card for my M17

Alienware support told me they can not sell me any graphic cards for my laptop but a 8700 gt should be run on it

...I found one on ebay and now the question is :

Do I need to do something for my 8700 gt to be recognise by my M17 ?

    Thanks for your answers ;)

It should be a direct swap provided that you have the SLi cable already and everything.

Unfortunately not... I do direct swap ( removing 2 defects cards first )
I plugged in the new one, power on M17 and still have a black screen even for BIOS...So I'm a little bit disapointed... any idea ?

    Thanks ;)

You bought only one to replace the 2 right ? If so, Check the socket you put it in and try it in the other one, I'm pretty sure the M17 supports 8700GTs...

.... Card only can be put in one socket (left)

Can't plug it in correctly on the second.... too large ;( I need to cut and not really ready to do this....

Really, you should have just waited for a 3870 to come up on eBay. Or for someone here to sell theirs.

Actually here is ma original configuration :

    9750 NVIDIA 7950 GTX 512MB DAUGHTER TL R1

    9750 NVIDIA 7950 GTX WITH 512MB PARENT

So 8700gt is the only one working with my actual M17 series ( alienware support told me... )

if its an M9750 then the bios DEF supports the 8700gt. it sounds like you make have a Defective card. i agree you should have waited for 3870 its about 2x as fast as the 8700gt, i think there is one for sale in the Marketplace if you look.

Ok...I m sure you right guys.... It was the last chance for this laptop before it go to the trash can.... So I decided to buy a "low" card to see if it can boot again without this f*** black screen... that's the reason I bought a 8700gt ;)

It's an M17 and thats the theory i was going on, The M9750 did so i'd have thought the M17 would have, I'm inclined to say its defective too.

FYI - In the M9750 when you turn it over the Master/Primary/Daughter Video Card Goes into the slot on the right/middle NOT the left. If your still confused, not the one which shares the CPU fan/heatsink.
If your replacement card does not fit into the slot then you have bought the wrong MXM type replacement. Alienware should still be selling 8700GT's for it so I would pester them about a new one.

Thanks Simonpoulton in fact yes now the card is in the right socket and for the alienware support the answer was " actually not available " and guy at support seems to have no idea if it will be available before 2012...lol
