Is it worth the upgrade to a 1080p screen on the Alienware M15x? Is it possible to go back and buy it at a later or would I need to get it right now?

The upgrade will be more expensive later. If you plan on getting Blu-Ray do it right away.

I'm not really interested in Blu-ray movies and the like. Is it worth it for gaming?

If you ever use a 1080p screen, you will never go back. If you are used to low resolution, 1440x900 is ok.

You can run games at 1080p but the higher the res the bigger the performance hit you'll take.

So you're basically recommending the 900p screen for gaming? I have a HDTV at 1080... I assume I could plug it in should I decide I need to?

Get the 1600x900 screen if your gaming for sure... While a single 260mGTX is pretty powerful you will be able to run your games at native resolution for far longer at that resolution..

As for hooking it up to your HDTV yes you can certainly do that .. You will just need a Display Port to HDMI converter which can be had fairly cheap if you look around....

I've yet to find a game that the M15x can't handle in full resolution on max settings, other than Crysis, which can be played on high (gamer) settings. MW2, Batman Arkham Asylum, Farcry 2, WoW and Grid all look amazing with no hiccups. Yes, you will get better framerates with the 900p resolution, but why do that when it will play at the full HD res? This is of course assuming you're going for the 260gtx and not the 240. And like so many have said, if you're going Blu-ray, then definitely go with the 1080p screen.

To the O.P you should just go for 1080p if you intenteing to upgrade it later on. I have another thread going on about atm about replacing the monitor due to a dead pixel. Unless you're installing it yourself, I wouldn't put too much faith in the onsite technicians to do a good job. Although I could be wrong about if you live in the U.S. But after my recent experience with an onsite techician, I'd defintely order any upgrades I need and have them assemble it in the factor in one go.
