9800GT now available on m15x

its not that special since the 9800 is basically a rebranded 8800. you wont notice a different with games using the 9800 over the 8800

 

Yeah I know that, just wondering why they made the switch, since it is only rebranded.

 

Great!!! More fuel for 'Alienware'... How about they lower their overall pricing by about $700 and we can talk?

I can just imagine the ridiculous pricing & advertising now that they have a 9 instead of an 8... even though Nvidia's 8=9

 

The reason that they changed it is because of marketing. People who do not know the difference between the cards will see the larger number and want this one over their previous one, and so Alienware will seem to be on top of things in this respect.(keeping their gpu's updated) Thus making the m15x seem on top of the competition oven more.

 

the 9800M GT was always out on the M15x...

It's just that it was named differently

 

What would one of these cost if I wanted to upgrade? (not likely but curious) and what would a used 8700 sell for

 

i think 500$ from AW. the 8700m-gt might sell a 100 bucks, maybe a bit more.

 

This has probably been addressed somewhere, but why was the 8800GTX rebranded to the 9800GT in the first place??

If they are exactly the same thing, with basically no changes, why would Nvidia bother changing the name aside from confusing everyone as a very bad marketing ploy?

 

maybe they were behind on developing the 9800m-gts and -gtx (the "real" 9-series high end cards) and wanted to get a high-peformance 9-series card out quickly... so they just took the last (8-series) high-performance card and rebranded it.

Yea probably...It will cost a fortune because the 9800gt is sooo much better than 8800gtx...

I mean it has like 2x the speed, shaders, and all that other gibberish...

 

Its because that marketing ploy worked the other times, and now it WILL work again as evident through some posts in this thread

 

So that's why the 8800m GTX option is gone .

That's a bit of a cheap marketing ploy IMO. I mean, playing on people's ignorance of GPUs by rebranding them. Ah curse the Nvidia naming scheme! lol Unlike some other things in life, you as a consumer wouldn't know you're getting a rebranded 8800GTX unless you were actually informed on the subject(ex: reading articles or such) because at first view you wouldn't notice anything(since the GPU is kind of inside the computer lol ).

Btw, is AW at least charging the same price for a 9800M GT upgrade as it did a 8800GTX upgrade?

 

i believe so, many ppl just called in to get it changed..so im guessing they didnt pay top dollat all over again
