This was brought up in another thread. Can you replace the 9800gtm's with the 9800gtx? I thought the gtx was a desktop card. The m17x manages heat ver efficiently. Will these cards work?

I'm guessing whoever it was who mentioned it failed to include the M in the 9800M GTX.

....ha ha yeah, but will they work? Is it a worthy upgrade, or should one wait for the 280?

The cards work, but they'll only fit if bought directly from Dell.

REALY!!!! Thats interesting, a forum member has in sig that he has 9800mgtx with 1gig memory, is he adding up two 512 and getting 1 gig. Or is each card 1 gig? Are these cards worth it?

...so that has got to be a performance boost. Is anyone aware if there will be a heat issue with these cards and the m17x? Im guessing not but, i'd like to know for sure.

M1730's GTXes work in the M17X?

GPU RAM is not particularly useful as an indicator of performance in mobile cards.

The GTXs are about 15-20% better than the stock GTs.

Great info, BUT will they work in the m17x??? when im not on a patrol im usualy watching a Blu Ray or playing a game, the video cards rarely go over 75 degrees, so I know it has good cooling, but can it handle the heat of more powerful cards??

    You stationed overseas?

Anyways, you might want to contact alienware. They'll be able to tell you if they'll fit, if they're too hot, if their bios will support it, ect.

Hello usmc1488, the m17x notebook currently supports the NVIDIA GeForce Go 8700M GT (Opt. SLI), 9800M GT (Opt. SLI), or NVIDIA Quadro FX 3600M but not the 9800M GTX cards. It features 512 Mbs graphics memory with one card installed and up to 1 GB combined graphics memory with two cards installed (SLI); both cards need to be the same. If you have a 9800M GT card in the system, the daughter card needs to also be a 9800M GT.

We offer two knowledge base articles that will assist you with replacing/upgrading the graphics cards in your m17x via our
AW main support page at- http://support.alienware.com/Support_Pages/Support_Area.aspx.

1- Article 5686 titled: How do I reseat or replace the Master Video Card of the Alienware Area-51 m17x mobile system?
2- Article 5687 titled: How do I reseat or replace the Slave Video Card of the Alienware Area-51 m17x mobile system?

You may also use our support page to contact our support agent via My Hive for upgrade assistance or contact us directly at-1-866-287-6727, option 3, then 1 via phone or [email protected] via email if you are overseas.

    Enjoy your m17x!

The M1730's GTX's DO NOT WORK IN THE M17X!

Dell, don't use MXM they have a special connector which has 2 GPU's in 1 board and connects it directly to the Motherboard.
