    I was wondering if a 9800M GTX from a Clevo will work in a M15x or M17x...

    I have no idea, but you guys should know better. Thanx.

    The card needs to be MXM 3.0 to work. I don't think there was a MXM 3.0 version of the 9800M GTX.

    But didn't the M17x or 15x carry the 9800M GT at some point?

    The Area-51 m17x can utilize the 9800M because it has an MXM 2.1 socket, the All Powerful M17x has an MXM 3.0 socket. You're getting the m17x mixed up with the M17x.
    The All Powerful M17x only ever came with the 9400M (integrated) and 260 or 280 and now 4870 wannabes.

    I see, I've always found the naming scheme of Alienware a bit confusing.

    So the Area-51 m17x will can use it and the Area-51 m15x ? Even if it is taken out of a Clevo laptop.

    I know the 9800 GT will go in the Area-51 m15x, but I'm not sure about the 9800 GTX.

    I there was 0omeone on this forum who managed to put in a GTX in his m15x ... although it was getting rather hot.

    Any GPU that is MXM 2.1 should work in a MXM 2.1 laptop.

    Sli MXM 2.1 GTX 280M is impossible, because there's no Sli connector. But Sli 9800M GTX could work in the older Area 51 m17x. The GTX 280M does work in the older m15x, but runs very warm.

    Alright, so I will assume that the 9800M GTX will work in SLI in the m17x and in the m15x as well but with some heating problems. Alright, thanx.

    just to add to this thread. The 4850's from the m17x won't work in the M17x. tested for the hell of it. Can't install them but the machine does boot :)

    But isn't the 4850 -> MXM 2.1 ... aren't the connectors physically different as the M17x is MXM 3.0?

    Actually, if you provide me with the latest BIOS for the m17x and the m15x I will post here the exact video cards that work with these laptops.

    Ya got me. I don't know. All i know is in our repair place we had dual 4850's which i thought came out of an older AW machine. I threw em into an M17x chassis and not a chance would they install

    Just a heads up...the GTX 260m is just a 55nm of the 9800m GTX (which is 65nm) that has 1gb of ram vs 512mb (so pretty much they are both just g92 with 112 sp's)
