After looking at a ton of laptops, reading a ton of reviews, and trolling the Alienware forum :p, I think I've finally decided to get a m15x eventually. I would definitely have enough money saved by the end of the year to get a XPS M1530, but I've wanted an Alienware for so long, that it'll be worth working a lot harder to save up double the get a m15x with at least a 2.5GHz processor and the highest end video card that Alienware offers (8800M GTX, 9800M GTX, or the 9900M GTX). I looked around the forums and didn't see anything about the 9800M GTX and the 9900M GTX. The 9900M GTX will probably last a good 2-3 years with most games maxed, and just Penryn would be fine if it had a 9900M GTX.

We're paying for the best in 15", is Alienware just going to skip every other generation of video cards or are we going to get the 9800M GTX, and later on, the 9900M GTX in the m15x?

I'd have to look into my crystal ball....

Unfortunately, the 9800M GTX mobile gpu hasn't even been announced, let alone the 9900M GTX - so anything is speculation, as far as I'm aware?

NVIDIA announced the 9800M GTX. I'm pretty sure that they announced the 9900M GTX, too.

The Toshiba Qosimo X305 had the 9800MGTX spec'd in with a release date of July 14. They have since removed the reference to the 9800MGTX and delayed the release to September...

I'm just curious as to whether Nvidia's ability to meet the original date of mid July had anything to do with Toshiba having to revise their website.

EDIT: BTW that is one fugly but fast gaming laptop.
EDIT2: Second Link for Qosimo x305 with 9800MGTX mentioned on Toshiba site

    9900 gtx = gt 280 = 9800 gx2
that desktop version and only been announced few weeks ago.
power consumption of 9900 gtx ~230W
    power consumption of 8800m gtx = 35W
so don't expect to see it on laptop in 1.5 years

i second nirvana's thoughts on the qosmio...

anyway. apparently, both 8800m and the 9-series will utilise the same MXMIII-HE slot, so theoretically, upgrading will be possible. then again, that's what AW said about the m9750 and the 8-series cards too... ;)

Ouch! Well I hope we can upgrade.. Then again I guess maybe because of the DX9 in the 7xxx and the DX10 in the 8xxx is different taht might of caused a fuss.. The 9xxx is DX10 also so mayeb we're in luck :)

also if the m15x if having heat issues with the 8800gtx then the 9900gtx will have far too many problems

Alienware never offered an official upgrade, but it should be possible if somebody wanted to try it ;).

BTW, in case anyone's wondering why I finally decided now, the only thing holding me back was the price. I could have got one when it came out if I didn't get my desktop, but I wanted something that'll be able to max out anything that the notebook I eventually decided on can't, and 15" was too small for me to have as my main. I know by the end of the year, I'll have enough money to get any other 15" except the m15x or a MacBook Pro. The 8600M GT or the 9600M GT won't be enough for me, so working harder to make more to get the m15x will be what I'm going to try to do.

As much as I like Apple, and the MBP was my first choice for a notebook until the m15x, the MBP is one of the most overpriced notebooks out there. I could get a Dell with the same specs for about half, or the m15x with an 8800M GTX with everything else stock for the same price as the MBPs start at, $2k.

You can also get a free iPod Touch/Nano now with the MBP (after a mail-in rebate actually) if you're going to college this fall.. Hehe

Just thought I'd drop that in there ;)

Don't mean to be making you think twice about the m15x, though I don't think there's much chance of that :p

How much slower is Windows on Bootcamp compared to Natively on a PC?

You want performance right ? Then the 8800 is the way to go ;) !!

The speed will be exactly the same as a native PC. Keep in mind the the 8800M GTX will be three times faster than the 8600M GT, though.

1.3", 7 pounds is a lot thinner and lighter than most people think. My dad has a 1.6"-1.7" thick, 8 pound 15" Gateway and it's not too bad of a size.

eh.... don't bet the house on it. I would think the laptop would melt after a few min with it considering the already considerable problems with 8800gtx. And if you read the clevo forum, you can see that the 15 incher from clevo won't even do 9800gtx due to "thermal budgeting"

how do you know? right now, there's no information out whatsoever... for all we know, the 9800m gtx could be using a 10nm die, and output only 25 degrees celsius of heat...

8800m gtx is in m15x and clevo M860tu.
9800m GTX got being in m860tu because of too much heat.
=>9800m GTX heat =higher than 8800m GTX heat.
    strugling m15x with 8800m gtx --> 9800m GTX heat = fondue m15x

Its not that hard to comprehend.

The 9800M GTX will need 44W+ , so the m15x won`t have it.
It just won`t happen, it still has issues with the 8800M GTX.

i dont know why they dont get this. Its not like they can do a bios patch to fix it like they did with the 8800m GTX overheats. you cant make fans go faster than maximum.

PS. how about a new avatar car eleron? lets see what you can pull out of your sleeve.

The m15x cannot take the 9800M GTX, unless they do some major changes to the mobo,and/or add another fan.

Instead of all these fancy upgrades, I think we should really ask for a new cooling system and a sturdier hinge/lid that won't break after 6 months of use.
That yes... would be an amazing change. Will it ever happen? I can almost bet ... it won't.

power draw is fine as the m15x has the MXM-HE/IV slot which gives that extra power. it's just the heat, as others have said.

you could put a 9x00M GTX in your m15x and make it work, just don't be surprised if it only works 5 minutes.

Power draw is directly proportional with the heat it emanates.
More power it needs , more heat it outputs.
I mean, the 8800M GTX needs 35W and already places the m15x close to water boiling point.

all this asuming that the m15x will never get the 9800m GTX or 9900m GTX is based of the m15x never getting a cooling upgrade/fan speed bump.....

its also based off the idea that the m860tu has a more effective cooling solution than the m15x.. which it may very well not.

    time will tell.

my guess E3 2008 will be where nvidia launches all its High end gaming Gpus for the next year or gaming.. lets hope we get some good stuff..

Like CPUs. The only way the high end GPU will be Faster is die shrink. Which will let the Gpu run Faster and Cooler with Less power. With the M17X I think it would handle the Dual 9800m GTX or 9900m GTX. Becuse the space between CPU, GPU and Ram.

well due to past history of both alienware and clevo, i expect no overheating from clevo and no upgrades from alienware. (they may bring out a new laptop though ^_^)

oh, and didnt E3 stop? its more of a private thing now, not a public thing. (thats a convention a dreamed of going to for a long time, then they close it when im independant!!!)

Actually, Nvidia will have their own gaming event this August in San Jose.

    Its called nVISION 2008.

E3 was nerfed after 2006, so do not expect too much stuff during it now except for game development news.... not much hardware.

Can we at least get the 9600M GT to start the system with? Now that I'm finally looking to buy one, $2500 is a lot to spend for an 8800M GTX 15" notebook, especially since I got my desktop. Spending around $1900 and adding an 8800M GTX a little later on would probably be the best idea for me. I want a laptop by around the end of the year and I don't want to make any compromises, so I'm going to try to find a way to work this out.

I would recommend just getting the basic config for now and smart bay drive for mobility. But, try to get the best processor you can right now, so that you don't have to send it in for upgrades. The GPU you can upgrade yourself once you decide to.

9800gtx uses the same core as the 8800gtx so in essence it is a oc'ed 8800gtx, so it is very unlikely that it is utilizing a different die build

Got this answer from the Customer support bout the 9800m GTX

    Dear Alienware Customer,

    Thank you for contacting Alienware.

Of course, Alienware constantly looks into offering the latest perks offered in computer technology, especially in improving the efficiency of systems currently offered.

However, we unfortunately have no definite information just yet regarding the approximate time frame for future availability of the Nvidia 9800m video card for our Area-51m Mobile Systems other than the fact that it is currently in the research and development stages.

Like any other Alienware system offered, these new components go through our extensive testing process for quality control, for compatibility and optimum high level gaming system performance. Please rest assured that as soon as it is available, it will be on our website as well.

When new technology comes out, usually the price of the slightly older technology drops but the effect may not be an immediate one so we are unable to tell you how much the price will be affected and when as the technology market prices are always changing.

If you need further information, please do not hesitate to contact us.

So looks they are investing the possibility of having a 9800m in the mx15

    That's true.
But think about it, unless they release a new laptop any time soon, and they won`t, the 9800M GTX might make it into the m17x.
Honestly, I don`t think the m15x will see it though.

the m17x does seem to have a way higher chance than the m15x ever will of having a 9800M GTX in it. if the clevo M860TU cant even take the 9800M GTX in it im sure the m15x isnt going to do much better. I would say if anyone is still hoping for a 9800M GTX M15x to just give up hope. The chance of the m15x even getting a 9800M GTX is pretty close to 0. Even if the option becomes available i bet it will turn into the extreme processor disaster. imagine having the extreme processor and the 9800m gtx in the m15x. you will have some of the slowest performance with thie most fastest parts available. :D at least theres hope for the m17x to get the 9800m gtx.

That might not be a done deal either.
I`m awaiting m17x reviews, that might give us an idea of how it handles heat.
