I ordered an Asus g51j from gentechpc a month ago and its finally arriving this Tuesday, and from the reviews and problems I see at the Asus forums I'm really stressing if I should return the Asus and get an MX 15 instead. My sister has an Discover Card so that means i get an 10% cash back + other various discounts on the MX 15 which is priced at 1,499(I plan on customizing it to around 1,800 If i return the g51j.
I know Asus has a major heat problem, but how bad is it compared to the MX 15 when playing Crysis/COD:MW2?
How long does the MX15 run for on battery?
What's this EEP discount?
-
2. On 6 cell battery or 9 cell battery?
3. EPP = Employee purchase program discount
-
The free battery, which is the 6 cell i think. -
There's no need to do copper mods to the M15x. It cools as good as a Clevo right out of the box. I had a G51-X2A and my gf currently has a G60vx and I think you should definitely switch. There's a very large quality difference between the two brands of notebooks and it immediately shows once you have them next to each other. -
copper mods are completely pointless in 99% of the situation .
K-tron explained it better then any one else. Unless there is a physical gap then its actually worse to add another medium the heat has to pass through -
Does the MX15 come with any free accessories?(backpack, head phones ect)
Now I'm really leaning towards the MX15
I ordered my Asus with an customized IC Diamond themal compound an an Intel wireless wifi card, am I still able to return it to gentech and get full price back?
I might actually save some money If I order the Mx15 with all the discounts and not having to buy an cooler. -
-
if you call and order you may be able to get something free
shipping, headset /..... who knows -
-
K-Tron was wrong. There is a quantitative gain by adding copper blocks to to a cooling system. You increase the surface area of available copper and it dissipates heat better. If you check the Asus forums, there's a huge thread dedicated to this and the numbers speak for themselves. In my case, the Asus G60vx load temps dropped from 92C to 84C by adding 16 copper blocks. You can't argue against those results. -
i am not refering to that kind of copper mod ....
my friend you are wrong
if you put a .1 mm copper shim to copper mod your CPU does the heat not have to pass throught that extra.01 mm of copper? What if that copper has more impurity's then the heatsinks copper?
if you add copper blocks like soviet did then yes the greater the surface area the greater the heat transfer
but no copper mod will help unless there is a issues with the cpu to heatsink already there -
He is MORE then aware that the greater the surface area the greater the transfer -
to the OP. I was in the exact same boat as you. I had ordered the G51J and began seeing threads of issues and such. I then looked at the M15x and it is by far better. A little more expensive but better. I just placed my order for the M15x. They wouldn't give me the headset and mouse free, but they did upgrade my graphic card to the 260m for free.
Hope it helps and welcome to the AW community. It is by far warmer and cozier in here than any other forum. -
I called gentechpc a while ago, they told me If i plan on returning the G51j, they would charge $150 for restocking fee since i spent 1,500 total even If I didn't open it, I'm getting it delivered by ups this tuesday. I feel like an retard now, I shoulda just ordered the MX15 plus i would probably have gotten it weeks earlier(took gentechpc 4 weeks to deliver it to me total)
IDK If I should return it now with the shipping fee + restocking fee T.T -
Not sure how much longer they will have it but I bought one today and you can get an Inspiron Mini 10v for 99.00 with the M15x.
-
if you do get it i would take a mini off your hands for 100$
-
It looked pretty sweet. The mini has XP, 160 gig drive, atom proc and 1 gig of ram. Also was wireless.
-
-
I'm going to call them and ask them If I can get some free parts or cheaper parts(i820 QM) and still get the mini for 99 WOOOT.
Any tips on what I should say to get a good discount? -
You will have to call. I just ordered mine today and got 10%, 3% and $50.00 off. Also got the $99.00 mini. You might have to try a few times. -

Work at a company that does business with Dell. My wife works for Disney. They will ask who you work for. If they ask for an ID number and you don't know it, just say you don't know and then tell them who you work for. It really is that simple. Student discounts are now handled here as well, I believe.

Just say that the only way you will order the laptop is if you are at a certain budget. So i said which is all true...my budget is $1500 before tax. I told them that the G51J had the exact same stats & came at a cheaper price. I than said, "it amazes me that the XPS has a better GPU which is not a premium gaming laptop while your front line gaming laptop is weaker and more expensive". I told them that if they were to keep the laptop in my budget with the item I wanted most then I would order then and there.
Done deal. Good game sir! -
I love my M15x, hands down best pre-built machine I have owned! It has no issues with heat (this is coming from a long time mac owner and old m15x owner) and will plow through any game you throw at it for a long time to come!
Unfortunately it doesnt come with many free accessories (though you do get a mousepad, hat, and stickers) but you get your return on the extra money spent by recieving a distinct and aggressive design!

What the OP and I were referring to was copper blocks. Hardly anyone has used a shim since there is little to no need. BTW K-Tron got banned because he was constantly talking down to other members in various threads that chose to use copper blocks. -
I'm having trouble calling them up right now, can anyone tell me the number to call epp in the U.S?
-
1-800-695-8133
-
Talking to epp rep now, he says i can get the headphones + mouse if i order it an a specific config at the price 1,590
-
Ok, I just finished talking an an Epp Rep, i got an 150 discount + AW Headphones + Mouse.
They told me if I ordered it at a specific config that would be the only way for me to get the headphones and mouse(it was actually the same spec I told him to build. but adding a adobe reader), also told me that the mini laptop was an special for black friday only.
I then told him to send me an email on the spec and price total, and it came up to almost 1,700, that was great with the specs i wanted, but then i saw the tax on that thing which is almost $160 holy , with an total of 1,850 which is more then i expected.
I would need to pay about $500 more in order to get it now, since gentech well charge me 10% for the restocking fee. -
It's ridiculous that Gentech wants to charge you a restocking fee for an item you haven't even received yet. You should leave them a negative reseller rating ( www.resellerratings.com) because in my view, they're trying to force you to keep something you don't want and haven't even opened. I'd understand if you opened and used it but that isn't the case. Ken Lee from Gentech is on the forums, PM him and see what he says.

Ok, I thought about it, was actually planning on getting the Asus g51j but due to epic failness on the UPS delivery I cursed them out on the phone and asked them to return it back to the previous sender.(Failed the 1st attempt because the ups guy decided to leave right as soon as he rang the bell then i filed a complaint to them, waited at home next day hoping the shipment would come, no one rang the bell and on my tracking it said that someone made an attempt already) F*ck UPS, Going to order an AW m15x and have it sent to my sisters instead now.
