just cheked the website and hey it's true!!
this is on the m15x, i7 x40 cores replacing the x20's with the same price as the previous x20's, so bye bye i7 x20 cores
The Dell Online Store: Build Your System
it's faster than we though
just want to know how does it differ with previous x20's and how about the performance??
-
Wow...
/10char -
is this better? and if so by how much?
-
Well it's 130MHz faster than the 920, so not really a massive improvement. Not worth getting one if you already have a 920.
-
Did they release a new bios for the M15x to support the 940xm? With the current bios the M17x R2 works with a 940xm but runs at 920xm speeds.
-
The M17x is not updated.
yup, it's just a refresh, unless you have an 7xx or 8xx and wanted to upgrade to a 9xx there's 0 reason to upgrade within the same series of cpus. Except in synthetics there is almost no performance gain here. -
Corrected - was looking at a different page
same thermal profile as well, and they do run a little faster
i7-940XM 8 MB SmartCache 2.13 GHz 55 W DDR3-1066/1333 MHz 4 Core
i7-920XM 8 MB SmartCache 2 GHz 55 W DDR3-1066/1333 MHz 4 Core -
just figured out that i7 740qm has the based 1.73Ghz such as the i7 820qm, the difference is on its turbo boost and of course the cache, does it means 740 is almost as fast as 820?
-
what? No, that's not true. It's the same manufacturing process, the same TDP. It's just 130mhz(which is nothing, which is why they're the same TDP) clock speed update. Nothing else. The pages for the 720 820 and 920 are identical to the 740 840 and 940 with the exception of clock speed , price, stating that Intel® Demand Based Switching is not supported and core ratios.
They're clocked a little over 8% more than the previous processors, 8% isn't going to break the TDP they were previously. -
Wow...I'm glad I didn't order my M15X earlier!
Also...why no i5-580m? I thought that would be released with the i7-x40s... -
i sent my r2 backm and im waiting till theres anew m18x in summer/august or a 40xm processor / 480 gfx cards then ill order =)
-
none of which exist except in the fantasy's of users in these forums, except the processors.
-
I wish they would have said something at E3 or even Computex, but nope nothing. Im about to pull the trigger and get me an M17x. I mean 2 5870s, 6 gbs or ram and an I7, that should be good for atleast 2-3 years, and that point im sure ill make a VIDOCK or something
-
I'm in the same boat. Although the m15x's just got the x40 series of processors, so I don't see why the m17x's should get them soon. Although, I really torn between just pulling the trigger now or waiting until I can get the 740 instead of the 720.
-
I'd just wait, I can't imagine it would be very much longer. That being said, 130mhz is nothing the write home about. It's not going to make or break anything you do.

Megacharge Custom User Title
Dell Canada is taking their sweet time with these chips. They aren't available for configuration here yet.
-
My only issue is I have a coupon code for $100 off that expires on June 30.
-
Relax, 100$ = 5-10min on the phone with a sales rep.
-
That may be the case. I've been e-mailing a rep who has been super helpful. I have the 10% EPP, the $100 coupon, and he said he could give me another 2% that "he had available to him". I think that seems like a pretty good deal, yea?
-
That's a great deal. I'd go for it.
-
Before his 2%, my total before taxes is 2575.

I think, you could still get it for less. I'd target a 2k if ordering through a rep.
-
So, do you suggest I try calling a rep? I'm working with a guy from Team Blackhawk right now who's e-mail was listed on this forum as getting major discounts.
-
15-20% off retail @ dell.com (not the epp site) is a big discount. 2% is not..
If he's already giving you an epp discount, the base is 10%. -
Well, then the discounts I'm getting are good then. Because I'm going through EPP, getting that 10%, getting an additional $100 off AFTER the 10%, and then 2% off that total.
-
Does anyone here have one of these new ones in a m15x? if so does it throttle? Please advise. Thank you.

shirleyfu
Has benched the 840 .

sub 13s in wprime? hmmm.. he must not throttle at all. which is strange since he's above the 74C Intel throttle limit.
-
Seems like that, On 100% load temps were 88c.Seen a QS today on ebay for $358 which is reasonable .

Bench for 940.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/har...market-upgrades/494826-benmarks-i7-940xm.html -
Looking at the price diff, they charge an extra $100 for the 940XM over what the 920XM used to be?
And some of shirleyfu's pic's don't load in the 940XM. (the 06 scores I think). -
Shirley got 23k cpu for vantage. That's impossible with the m17x because of the intel throttling.
-
Physx enabled
-
Ah that's right, good point!
-
That score is wrong then! Thank god... I was getting afraid!
-
I really wish they would repair the throttling issue. I am wondering if Alienware like Dell is adopting the mindset of selling broken PC's to customer and just waiting for lawsuits years later...
Anyways going back to x40 cores, I believe next week they will be available. -
I hope not... I realise prices for Alienware's have dropped immensely over the last few years, but that doesn't.. no it shouldn't allow them to skimp on Quality. Don't lower the price then dammit.
-
The processor throttling? It's a built-in feature, it's not broken.
-
Yes I know but they should fix the fact that they sell a PC as overclockable and yet we can barely reach 5% OC due to the throttling issue.
-
The only way to do that is to allow it to go beyond it's thermal limits. Guess what happens when the average Joe (no pun intended
) starts playing with OC'ing.
-
+1
There will always be a limit for safety reasons -
none taken
-
Any word on the x40 being available in the M17x?
-
no, but i'm waiting for the exact same thing. i just ordered my m17x on the 29th... so i'm trying to decide if i ask them to change the 720 to the 740, since they are the same price
