    Hi,

I am based in the UK, just ordered a m17x with 675m. Because of the E-bundle, i cannot upgrade it to 7970m.

I am wondering how much does Dell ask for an AMD 7970m card? and how much it worth? Shall I just buy a 7970m and upgrade myself?

Of course different people have different view on this, please express freely.

    thank you very much.

Not sure about UK prices but in the US the 7970m is $150 less than the 675M. Buying one on it's own (if you can find it) is around $500 last I've heard of.

yeahh they did create E-bundle with 675m cosz they want to get rid of 675m card as fast as they can, even tho they did drop price for 7970M so you will not get option for it after choosin those bundles. As per my knowledge you will not able to change graphics card after placin order you will need to cancel ur current order then place fresh one.
By upgradin urself it will be easy but cost you to much say approx £500 includin all parts, But if you go with dell option then it will be just £180 with full warranty. If you are Nvidia fan then better to wait for next two weeks then you will get option for 680M (but price will be about extra £250 over current £675m)

the 7970 is double the performance of the 675 and is on par with the 680.

I think you may find it of benefit to have a chat with my rep. He arranges great deals of us in the UK and I am positive that he can configure a 17x for you with 7970m at a price less than what you ordered it for.

You can cancel your order you just placed and I can get you in touch with him. Send me a Private messsage (after you have made around 5 posts on the forum) and you could also have a look at my "money-saving" thread over here http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...system-accessories-please-contribute-88.html# to see how many people have saved. We could probably get you something like this:

    hey, guys

    thanks for all your reply.

I don't have as deep pocket as some of the serious members in this forum. My m17x build was really simple. with 675m, 1080p lcd, killer card options, the rest are basic. After e-bundle and 10% dmx discount, i paid less than £1200 for the machine.

do you guys think upgrade 3610qm to 3720qm is cost effective? how much difference it will make if I intent to use the machine for hd movie and Diablo3?

You won't see a difference. And the only 3720QM I could find to purchase on it's own was on eBay for about $300.

I cancelled my order just now. I think I will wait for an e-bundle with 7979m or 680m.
I will take the 3610qm CPU. In the end it is a i7! The most powerful mobile CPU I ever used is a i5 540. I think I will be happy.

When the warranty ran out, I may consider upgrade then.

Glad you found it of use. If I can help out, I will certainly do my best to help you get a good deal on something with a 7970m under the hood - if that's what you are after!

None at all, but one thing to keep in mind is that the 3720QM (and 3820QM too) have a partially unlocked multi by 4x over their stock value.
Meaning you can overclock the 3720QM to 4.0/3.9/3.8ghz for 1/2/3-4 core which makes it 700mhz faster then the 3610QM (which does not have that partial unlocked multi).

For $150 extra I think its worth it!

It still is not "worth it", unless you can justify the kind of application you'd use that would benefit/gain from the mere 700MHz clock increment.

    To each his own.
In my case an extra $150 for my $3k+ m18x meant an extra ~5% in price for 22.5% more cpu power. Definitely seemed worth it to me.

And I did say the OP would not see any difference at all for HD movie and Diablo 3.

I agree. When spending that kind of cash, it seems rather stingy to be so mean regards upgrading the cpu - especially when it does have additional benefits. The cost to performance ratio seems to be a no-brainer.

    + rep !!
