Thanks, but this vBios is not suitable. I need to Alienware.
-
Sorry didn't know vBios were manufacturer specific...
Have you tried contacting Alienware/Dell directly? -
Tried it, but in Russia the problem with technical support Alienware/Dell.
-
Ill be able to upload it in 3 days if its not to late.
-
You have a vBios for R9 M290X Dell/Alienware and Clevo?
-
darkydark
Excuse for importunity, but be kind, in addition to the vbios 8970m make a dump and share please vbios from Firepro M6100.
Actually, I'm very grateful owner Alienware 17 or 18 with switchable graphics (R9 M290x + HD4600) for the dump vbios M290X.
How to:
1) Run http://us1-dl.techpowerup.com/SysInfo/GPU-Z/GPU-Z.0.7.9.exe
2) Choose from drop down list (bottom of the program window ) M290X / 8970M
2) Run render test (question mark)
3) Push save bios button (save to file) -
You have the original vBios R9 M290X for Alienware?
-
An owner of aw17 from another forum will dump it for me.
I did try to dump vbios of my m6100 with gpuz 7.8 but no dice, will try later today with 7.9 -
Don't forget to share with me. Thank you.

Do you still need this vbios M290X?
-
Yes, I need it. You have a laptop it is the video card? If not difficult, and you have the original vBios for R9 M290X, save it GPU-Z and give me. Thank you very much.
-
Please let me vBios R9 M290X with your AW18. Via GPU-Z.
Thank you. -
I have AW17 R9 M290X . I can send you the vbios from GPU-Z, on meile?
-
vBios I sent to your email.

And what happened to your graphics card that you need the original vbios?
-
I have two R9 M290X, but GPU-Z displays them as HD 8970M. What shows do you have?
-
I have one R9 M290X ,GPU-Z shows me AMD Radeon R9 M290X .
Attached Files:
-
-
you have two Other Drivers one catalyst 14.7 beta and it is shown HD8970
On the driver from dell have shown R9 M290X
driver catalyst from amd website, show you a different model. I have the same, driver from amd website shows different graphics card
the official driver from the website della shows correctly model R9 M290X -
You have such driver on the video cost?
Driver Details | Dell US -
yes I have this driver Video_Driver_D24NC_WN_13.251.3_A02.
how to install the driver catalyst 14.4 or 14.7 is also have another card model shown in GPU-Z -
Put this driver and see in GPU-Z.

The two cards are identical so some things may get confused.
-
hi, i have msi GX 60 detroyer CC and i have E16FKAMS.D0K bios version . but its block my gpu to 900mhz
i want good bios please to be 1250mhz -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
To be honest with that cpu it's not really worth it unless you have an engineering sample cpu that's unlocked.
-
So I got confused. Standing in my laptop 2 x R9 M290X, and GPU-Z shows 2 x HD 8970M.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Yes like I said since there is no physical difference between the two detection programs may have issues.
-
Same thing can happen using CPU-Z with some CPUs. The detection and monitoring utilities are good, but they are not perfect.
Another way of looking at it... if it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, quacks like a duck... it's a duck. An 8970M is, in fact, an R9 M290X.Ferris23 likes this. -
Not happy that I paid more for R9 M290X, and got the HD 8970M.
-
LOL.. They're the same thing exactly.. Just the name is different

LOL... Already know.
I want the name R9 M290X, so I want to try different vBios. -
The problem with the mistaken identity could be GPU-Z, maybe not your vBIOS.
Have you tried using something else such as AIDA64, GPU Shark or GPU Caps Viewer?
Is the hardware ID the correct one for R9 M290X? -
-
Hmmm... will have to Google to see if the HWID is supposed to be different on R9 M290X. I suppose it should be because 7970M and 8970M are different. Did you flash your GPU with the 8970M vBIOS by chance?
Edit: if this information is accurate, the hardware ID is not even unique. If that is the case, it may be difficult for any software to correctly identify the GPU.Code:;----------------------------------------------- ;----------1303070036-12.102-130306a-154152E-ATI ; ATI Display Information file : atiilhag.inf ; ; Installation INF for the ATI display driver. ; Copyright(C) 1998-2006 ATI Technologies Inc. ;----------------------------------------------- ; ; Driver information ; [ATI.Mfg] AMD6800.1 = R576B, Vendor ID: 1002 Dev ID: [COLOR=#FF0000][B]6800[/B][/COLOR] SubSystem ID: 01241002 = "AMD Radeon HD 7970M" AMD6800.2 = R576B, Vendor ID: 1002 Dev ID: [COLOR=#FF0000][B]6800[/B][/COLOR] SubSystem ID: 21118086 = "AMD Radeon HD 7970M" AMD6800.3 = R576B, Vendor ID: 1002 Dev ID: [COLOR=#FF0000][B]6800[/B][/COLOR] SubSystem ID: 21108086 = "AMD Radeon HD 7970M" AMD6800.4 = R576B, Vendor ID: 1002 Dev ID: [COLOR=#FF0000][B]6800[/B][/COLOR] = "AMD Radeon HD 7970M" AMD6801.1 = R576B, Vendor ID: 1002 Dev ID: [B][COLOR=#0000CD]6801[/COLOR][/B] SubSystem ID: 01241002 = "AMD Radeon HD 8970M" AMD6801.2 = R576B, Vendor ID: 1002 Dev ID: [COLOR=#0000CD][B]6801[/B][/COLOR] SubSystem ID: 21118086 = "AMD Radeon HD 8970M" AMD6801.3 = R576B, Vendor ID: 1002 Dev ID: [COLOR=#0000CD][B]6801[/B][/COLOR] SubSystem ID: 21108086 = "AMD Radeon HD 8970M" AMD6801.4 = R576B, Vendor ID: 1002 Dev ID: [COLOR=#0000CD][B]6801[/B][/COLOR] = "AMD Radeon HD 8970M"
This may also explain why Doctor JO could not find what he was looking for in this thread [ LINK].
It has been too long ago that I tinkered with AMD GPUs, but you might be able to mod your driver INF and change the name of the GPU in the driver from HD 8970M to R9 M290X. Just changes those lines with Notepad and reinstall the driver. (Have to reboot with DSE temporarily disabled during installation with W8.) This will work with NVIDIA, but I am not 100% about AMD... probably will work.
I found this inside of an AMD driver INF... looks like it is distinguished with a ".1" in the hardware ID versus a ".2" for 8970M.
See if this utility will identify the .1 or .2 in your hardware ID [ Download]. If your hardware is the .2 then you did get a pair of 8970M cards instead of R9 M290X. I suppose that it is entirely possible that AMD pulled a fast one and the only way to actually distinguish one from the other is based upon what the Catalyst package tells Windows it should call the GPU. If that's the case, I think that is deceptive marketing and AMD should be sued for it. But, also a positive indication you should be able to correct it by modding the driver package and reinstalling it. You probably can just replace the description in quotes in the AMD6800.2 line to read the same as the line above it, like this...Code:DiskId = "Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. Installation DISK (VIDEO)" GraphAdap = "Graphics Adapter" ATI = "Advanced Micro Devices, Inc." InstallDir = "AMD\CCC2\Install" DisplayUninstall = "AMD Display Component Uninstall" ATIR300="WDDM (R300)" AMD6800.1 = "AMD Radeon HD 7970M" AMD6800.2 = "AMD Radeon HD 7970M" AMD6800.3 = "AMD Radeon HD 7970M" [COLOR=#0000cd][B]AMD6801.1 = "AMD Radeon R9 M290X"[/B][/COLOR] [COLOR=#ff0000][B]AMD6801.2 = "AMD Radeon(TM) HD8970M"[/B][/COLOR]
Code:[COLOR=#0000cd][B]AMD6801.1 = "AMD Radeon R9 M290X"[/B][/COLOR] [COLOR=#ff0000][B]AMD6801.2 = "[B]AMD Radeon R9 M290X[/B]"[/B][/COLOR]

Still tinkering for changing the text in gpu-z seems a little extreme.
-
And where can I find it and edit with Notepad? I have searched and not found. Can I specify the path? Thank you.
-
Code:
AMD6801.1 = "AMD Radeon R9 M290X"
AMD6801.2 = "AMD Radeon R9 M290X"
I changed the name in Notepad, then the display driver is not installed and everything. -
I'm not sure since I don't have access to your drivers and hardware. There are several INF files to choose from and I don't know which one(s) you need to modify.
-
I am using AMD Catalyst 14.8 (WHQL 14.201.1008 August 12) driver. Help me to do the right thing. Thank you. +1 Rep
(Have to reboot with DSE temporarily disabled during installation with W8.) - how to do it? -
It has been so long since I used an AMD video card that I don't remember which INF to mod. You won't need to worry about which one if you change all of them that have your hardware ID in the INF to be exactly the same. Do like you did on the last attempt, but do the same exact tweak to all of them. The INF files to mod should be in the \Packages\Drivers\Display\WB6A_INF folder if you have x64 (if using 32 bit Windows, the W8_INF folder applies) and you should be good to go. All you are doing with the mod is changing what the driver is telling Windows to name the video cards. Most unfortunately, if you have Windows 8 or 8.1 any modded driver will fail to install while Driver Signature Enforcement is enabled (thanks to the Nazi control freaks at Micro$oft for this). This guy did a good job of explaining and demonstrating in this video.

Looks like two INF files in your driver package have your hardware ID in them. These two...
I see there is NO REFERENCE to R9 M290X found in the driver, so the reason your GPU is being called the 8970M is because that is what the driver told Windows to call it. Changing it should correct that problem.
It took AMD about 9 months to release a driver that had proper support for 7970M and other GCN video cards. I doubt they can or will ever fix this naming convention problem if the 8970M and R9 M290X share an identical hardware ID. It will be impossible for Windows to identify your GPU specifically and you will have to mod the INF every time forever if you want Windows to use the correct name. We have seen this in the past and it may never change. Apparently, AMD doesn't care about their video cards having the correct name in Windows and it appears they assume their customers don't care. Or, maybe they don't care what their customers think about it. For example, AMD has always called 6970M and 6900M the "6900M Series" and the only way to tell which GPU has been installed is to look at the specs in GPU-Z. This doesn't affect the function, but nobody really appreciates having their newer GPU (marketed with a new name) being called exactly the same thing in Windows as the older GPU even if they have the same specs.Last edited by a moderator: May 6, 2015yegg55 likes this. -
Thank you very much, I will try.

Thank you very much, you helped me a lot. As I understand it, while AMD will not add to the list of drivers R9 M290X, so we'll see how HD 8970M, or to put the old driver from Dell.Mr. Fox likes this.

Hi, do you think the BIOS with 4GB memory size and 1250mhz on memory clock will work in my R9 M290X -MSI GX70- with 2GB of memory and 900mhz -mem clock-?? PLEASE, anyone could help me? i want that clocks!

Here is a screenshot of my GPU-Z with my R9 M290X (stock BIOS), if you installed the Alienware driver and you have the stock BIOS, then it should display M290X
Additionally, if you did that, and it still doesn't show M290X, then try to uninstall the driver using DDU and reinstall again rebooting between the uninstallation and reinstallation of the driver:
-
That may work, but there is a great chance flashing that may soft-brick your GPU. I would not recommend experimenting if you do not have a way to revive the GPU if the flash fails or the foreign firmware makes the machine unbootable. This is very risky unless you have an M18xR1 or M18xR2 with an unlocked system BIOS at your disposal to fix the problem. MSI vBIOS is known for having compatibility problems with Clevo and Dell GPUs and vice versa.
