Just wondering if there going to bring back the 18.. or some thing equivalent.. I feel as if i was hung out to dry on this 18 and lack of support and no follow ups lol.. they waited there sweet time dealing with the issue i have been having.. I wish they would offer us a desktop top replacement in place of these 18s... but alas i didnt get a call back and when i would call in they told me to wait for the call back haha..now my warranty is capuut.

Doubt it, lol. Even if they did, it would still be soldered junk. If the Alienware 17 R2 goes up to $2799 for a single 980M, I imagine the Alienware 18 would be well over $3000, probably up to $4000. That's a lot of dough for a couple years of gaming. The value pretty much depreciates as fast as Moore's law works for performance. They'd also probably give you a 240W PSU with it.

They better be working on some 18 inch laptop...
-
They're probably making a tablet, lol. They already have a console.
Imagine a thicker iPad with an Alienware logo on the back instead of an Apple.

@Mr. Fox,
Don't forget the Alienware Graphics Amplifier to hook up to your tablet!
Probably through some adapter you plug into the mini-DP.

Aren't you guys forgetting about the "All Powerful" fastest gaming wrist watch in the UNIVERSE!!!!!!
(Obviously, it is thin and light, has components you cannot change, is made of plastic...therefore, it should appeal to absolutely everyone........Speaking of the GA, I believe there are also plans in the pipeline for a new backpack so you can strap your eGPU to yourself - along with 3 car batteries - for that full power 'on the go' mobile experience. Actually, I shouldn't really divulge this here, but there are 'top secret' plans for a Tri-SLI eGPU setup so you can use said backpack/eGPU's/car batteries, but the Dell marketing/engineering folk are a bit worried that one then might resemble a Jihadi suicide bomber, so it's not been signed off just yet......).

Actually that's exactly what the Dell rep said to me. 180w is enough for single gpu, while the 240w is exclusively for the dual gpu machines.
Also, they will BGA your components onto your forehead upon purchase. -
Really? lol.

Dell are so full of **** nowadays... BTW this thread is making me LOL too much.. Stop it guys

I would like to see they bring a borderless display, just like the xps13, to Alienware.
-
A lot of us loved the edge-to-edge display and still do. That would not be something new for Alienware. It's awesome, produces a nicer image and is aesthetically superior. Some people whined and moaned about it being too glossy, but that was a valuable distinguishing feature of Alienware laptops that went back to the first models released after Dell purchased Alienware. It wasn't until the last product release that they introduced the ugly display bezel. You can have it back with a slimy touch display on the new models.
-
personally prefer matte due to ease of replacement
-
Would love a 17-18 inches gaming laptop with OLED screen with replaceable parts. That's all I want.
-
Why do you want OLED? Newest screens are nearly perfect and AMOLED screens are too colorful for me
-
LCDs can produce good blacks (most games are dark oriented) unless you lower the brightness to 0 while in daytime, and doing this reduce the saturation of the colors. OLED is highly saturated, I agree on that, but it is nothing that cant be fixed with some calibration. Also, we might take advantage of the lower response time and higher refresh rate of the screen.
-
I dont think Oled would be a good idea for a windows system. I can see that start buttom burned into the screen already
-
Agreed.. Screen burn in problem is going to happen for sure with it and the windows start button
-
Maybe then fancy screensavers will make a comeback
-
Solid black is my favorite screen saver. It never clashes with whatever color slacks and blouse I might be wearing.
-
Then the entire OLED screen will be burned-in
-
Im satisfied with my current screen in M18xR1. It's Samsung 184HT. Don't need OLED

LOL, that was more sarcastic humor than it was an insider view. Clevo has plenty of worthless castrated BGA garbage like all of the other guys. Thankfully, they still have a few alternatives with sockets and slots, hence my jab at Alienware for not offering such options.
I'm not aware of any new dual-GPU beasts. They have the single-GPU Batman laptop with a desktop Quad-core that is a nice alternative to BGA, but not really any better in terms of specs than any other laptop with a mobile Extreme CPU and single MXM slot. Unless they release a dual-GPU successor to the P570WM updated with a X99, and 5th Generation desktop hexacore and octacore K and X CPU support, Clevo won't actually have anything to offer that I care about. I'll stick with my M18xR1/R2/18 and P570WM until then, or switch to desktop. I won't downgrade to anything BGA or single GPU... unacceptable. -
the msi rep said i should check out the gt80 i believe its called.. said its all upradable with an awesome cooling system.. but who knows..
-
The GPU's are MXM, but the CPU is BGA.
-
It has a crippled low-TDP CPU welded to the motherboard. I looked into that machine when details were first released and quickly concluded it wasn't what I was looking for. There are very few notebooks left any more that I find acceptable. Almost everything available is something I view as being a piece of trash, and even those few that are acceptable leave something to be desired. Nothing really matches the quality of the M18xR1/R2 and Alienware 18. The only thing that actually performs better is the P570WM. I really like it a lot and have no regret buying it, but there are several things about it that are not as good as the Alienware SLI beasts. I'd rather keep running one of these legacy beast machines than make such deep compromises in both performance and quality with BGA notebooks.
-
Just One BIG disadvantage. P570WM is not 18.4 inch
-
I don't really see that as a disadvantage.. Personally I see anything less than a 120hz as undesirable. Yet it's a possibility on the Clevo's with SLI that can actually muster up 60+ fps for it to make sense unlike the older single GPU AW17's with 120hz panels.
The laptop market is indeed looking bleak though. It's going to take something pretty special to make me come back from a desktop as my primary now. Which is sad.. It shouldn't have been this way. I'll probably never go AW again based solely on how they communicated (lack of) after reaching out and engaging our enthusiast community here.. And based on them not supporting anymore and likely blocking upgrades, ridiculous after investing in such an expensive machine. All we got from them was a bunch of lip-service about them hooking us up with a BIOS update and 'let's work together' insincerity. So I voted with my wallet..
Clevo is all there is now. I hope they release something as overkill and serious as the P570 down the road. I also hope MXM or non bespoke replacement GPU modules have a future too.Last edited: May 14, 2015 -
Dell, "a thing of the past" It will always hold a special place in my heart, once i gain the give 2 sh!ts to replace my warrantied 980m i might fire up that old machine once more, but until that day it still remains only running off my 3920xm for tablet work....

17.3" actually, it's just the weight makes it feel like a 20" machine lol. -
Honestly, there's not enough variance between 17" and 18" that I even notice the difference in screen size at 1080p... not a big deal as far as I am concerned. At higher resolutions, like 2560x1440 and beyond, the 1 inch decrease in screen size has more of an impact on viewing comfort and clarity.
The P570WM doesn't feel bigger or heavier than my 18" Alienware machines, and none of them are what I would consider "too big" or "too heavy" by any means. That's part of what makes them so desirable. Of course, brute force is the main reason they are so lovable and awesome.
Riddle: What did the big daddy dual-GPU laptop say to the single GPU baby-girl crippled BGA laptop?

Off topic, but this has got to be the creppiest line I have ever read on this forum. Brrrr....
On topic, uhhh.... okay, just to wrap my mind around this, people in this thread want Alienware to make a true DTR again, yes? Because Alienware currently seems to intend on making gaming laptops, not gaming DTRs. -
Alienware 2015 is not for true players that want heavy DTR killers
-
Ah, well, good then. Alienware no longer making real high performance machines with sockets and slots, and only offering BGA laptops is really super creepy, too... so, mission accomplished.
As the song says, either work hard or might as well quit... -
Alienware right now, is just a fancy laptop. nothing of Alienware can compare to their competitor - the specs, the upgradability is really worst right now.
If you really love Alienware, just don't buy it until Dell can realize that what Alienware suppose to be. -
I don't mind fancy. In fact, I really like fancy a whole bunch. But, being a toothless and de-clawed lion really sucks.

The new models do at least have a very good battery life, if the dock starts performing well that will open up avenues for a lot of people.

People don't buy gaming laptops for battery performance.......
-
Unless the gaming laptop is small (13.3" to 14.1").
-
Then that raises a question of whether it actually qualifies as a "gaming laptop" or just something that does not fail miserably at playing games. Small laptops with battery life being a primary goal are totally fine if that is what the end user actually wants, but it still carries some significant compromises that are tough to ignore. Where performance is the primary goal, battery life quite frequently is not something that weighs heavily on the mind of the gamer or performance enthusiast. Some actually do not care even a little bit and view the battery as being more of an accessory or a built in UPS. *raises hand*

I wouldn't even care if there wasn't a battery at all. I've never gamed on battery. I just want a decent DTR.
TomJGX, Rotary Heart and Mr. Fox like this. -
It's nice having a battery so you can unplug, move to another room, and then plug back in again without restarting. I like that feature a lot.
The defective designs that are being employed where some laptops must have a battery installed to achieve expected performance is insane. Laptops should not be dependent on battery power to run at full performance. They should run exactly the same with no battery installed. This is a truly grievous engineering flaw, and the architects of such an abortion are just nuts. They need to just design the suckers from the ground up with an adequate AC adapter and stop playing silly games.TomJGX, steviejones133 and TBoneSan like this. -
unless they use it for different purposes as well other than gaming
alienwares typically have pretty decent battery lifeMr. Fox likes this. -
Yes, they sure do, which kind of underscores the foolishness and futility of the quest. My M18xR2 gets between 4.5 and 5 hours on battery running on IGFX. I think I have actually needed wanted to run it on battery power for that long 3 or 4, maybe 5 times since it was brand new... about twice a year, LOL. The rest of the time it has been plugged into a wall outlet. If 3 to 5 hours isn't long enough, an honest to goodness gaming laptop isn't the ideal tool for the job.

People tend to purchase V8 fat and heavy cars and then start crying because of the MPG. Is the same thing with laptops...
I know someone who have an old Alienwaer M15x and he complains about the battery life of it, but he always have the leds on, high performance option and screen brightness to the max...TomJGX, steviejones133 and Mr. Fox like this.
