Wow, I didnt know you guys were having an issue with the HDMI audio, or I would have pointed you towards those to try myself.

My basic understanding of the situation is that ATI recieves the drivers after Realtek release them from internal testing, perform some small internal modifications then bundle them with thier Catalyst. Due to ATI usually focusing on stability for these, I tended to find the realtek drivers were usually a little ahead of ATI in terms of functionality etc.
It USED to be the case you HAD to download the drivers for Realtek, as there wasn't sufficient demand for ATI to package them together, so out of habit I was using them all along with my 4870.

I've heard they've now finally fixed the ATI HDMI audio DX10 issue (broke at about Cat 8.6 IIRC), however Im not sure whether thats with ATIs release, or the realtek release (not to mention my source was a 5870 user, not a 4850/3870 user, so he's using marginally different hardware.)

Those 3870s should be capable of 2.0 LCPM, DD and DTS. Anyone with 4850s should be able to output 7.1 LPCM, DTS and DD. Eventually the 5-series cards will be able to do DTS-MA and Dolby TrueHD as well, as they incorporate the fixed protected audio path, which the 2/3/4 series lacked.

Just be aware it may not set to default automatically, so you may need to change your default audio output!
