Alright, so did anyone get the Alienware email advertising CES?

I think it's Sandy Bridge M11x and the rest of the M1Xx line-up. We should start with another thread on this. ;)

Saw that, but IMHO the 15 and 17 will see an update before the the m11x will. The first SB rollout will be quad core with the ULV following thereafter.

I threw it out there because of the "skinny" part. I didn't think of anything else.

    M15x.

Sandy Bridge ULV won't be out until after around March so that rules out M11x, and even in relative terms you don't describe an M17x as skinny...especially if you're hoping it will house two potentially 100W TDP GPU in SLI.

I don't know if the "Bad- REDACTED" part is good or bad...

And I just noticed that the Alien-head has an Alien-head inside similar to those on the lids of their laptops.

Also, why is the domain pcworld.com?

Is there really much mystery left? We already know what the M17x-R3 is going to look like and the benchmark results. Guess that leaves M15x/M11x and I doubt they will get anything exciting. I don't even know if sandy bridge will really outperform a 920xm/940xm chip that has the benefit of Throttlestop since those can perform at desktop CPU levels and give locked mobile chips a sound thrashing. Just for reference, an unlocked 920xm using Throttlestop at 100 TDP is 2x the performance of a 720qm if not more. I don't expect sandy bridge to provide a similar boost in performance. I am quite interested in the Geforce 500 mobility series and if nVidia follows what they're doing on the desktop level, they should outperform AMD. The Cayman 6950/6970 desktop card was a big fail vs GTX 580.

Barts wins vs. GF104. Particularly in dual GPU configs.

GTX 580M does still have a chance though since it might be rated at a 70W TDP without the memory. Though that would lead at least me to think it's not a card you'd find in a thinned down M17x.

After seeing the benchmarks for the M17x and Sandybridge it got me thinking
Will the next gen M11x have a dedicated GPU?
Scoring over 16000 in 3DMark06 with just the integrated Intel HD Gpu is pretty amazing.
Maybe I got too much free time on my hands but I've had this rattling in my head, all you need is SandyBridge and NO dedicated GPU!
It would be about twice as powerful while only needing to power the CPU.
That would mean thinner and a more compact profile while still having decent battery life.
    Makes sense to me :)

My thoughts on this matter is that only an M17X R3 will be presented at CES thus the huge. Skinny I think because it's possible that the PC is thinner. The other words just mean nothing. Alienware is known to use big words for no reasons... Remember the hummer thing...

What about an ultra-thin 13" gaming laptop? Even if that isn't released, a M13x with M11x internals would be great because the M11x has such a huge bezel around the screen that the screen should be bigger than 11.6".

Do you REALLY think this is possible? The desktop version of the Sandy Bridge IGP performs like an ATI 5450, I don't see any way the mobile version is 4x as powerful.

I'm with drfelip on this one. I suspect that was actually a GTX 460M with some form of switchable graphics. The score is about right for a GTX 460M if you look at the CPUs in each benchmark, and account for how they affect 3dmark06.

I agree. That M17x R3 had switchable graphics so 3D mark only recognized the integrated chip. This happens with the current M11x. Some programs like windows experience score and 3D mark only see the integrated yet it scores like 8000+ 3Dmarks.

I think its going to be the M17X, cuz if you saw those pictures of the new M17X that surfed the internet a while ago, it showed a red slimmer M17X with HD 6900M series card/s and sandy bridge.

NBR's review of the ASUS G73JW-A1 scored 13,264 in 3DMark06 with a single GTX 460M and an i7-740QM.

According to Anand's preview of Sandy Bridge the new arch could perform 10-17% better per clock than the current arch....making the i7-2720QM faster than the i7-940XM at stock.

If you're still skeptical that a faster Sandy Bridge CPU is producing the extra 3K points in the heavily CPU-influenced 3dMark06 you can consider also there's reasonable evidence in the leaked photos to suggest that the 3dMark06 tests were ran at a lower than default resolution.

That sounds about right. If it was SLI GTX 460Ms it would be much higher than what it was anyways. It would get around that in Vantage.

I can't wait for decent mobile quad cores. Clarksfields run too hot for my tastes.

Yea but will Sandy bridge CPU's be throttle stop compatible? Or will there be other overclock options? Will it be TME locked, or only 5% overclockable? If not, then I wonder how the SB CPU will compare to a 920XM. The i7 XM CPU's have amazing overclocking capabilities now as is. Just wondering what the capacity to overclock, and capability will be like with SB.

Unless Kevin builds in support for SB, I wouldn't count on it working. They'll likely be locked down even more so than the current i7s. Johnkss mentioned that the SB desktop chips were not faring very well due to some limit though I haven't read up on that yet.

Same, I'd pick one up too as long as they make the actual notebook bigger than the M11x as well. I'd need a bigger keyboard to be comfortable typing with it.

There are K and S sku's. Not sure where he got his facts since he didn't quote anything. The K's are unlocked and the S are performance based and seem to fare pretty well according to this The Sandy Bridge Preview - AnandTech :: Your Source for Hardware Analysis and News.
They're using an I5 Sandy to compare to a 980X. I would have liked to seen a higher end Sandy.

Man I really hate to be Scrooge in this thread, but it makes no sense to build an M13X when they have the M11X already on the market. Personally I like the idea of a 13" AW, but it's not fiscally responsible.

I don't see it happening either, especialy if you know a decent m11x (i.e. with the core i7 cpu, 4gb ram and 500gb hdd) costs as much or even 100-200€ more than an m15x (also with a core i7) here in belgium.

It's not the first time a thread like this gets replies on how it is financially, or strategically unfeasible for Alienware to introduce another model of some x size.

The same thing happened before the M11x was released. A lot of people here were saying the same things that are being said now about a potential M13x.

I'm not saying that it will happen, all I am saying is that nothing is out of the question for these guys. If there is a market for it, I'm sure they are looking into it.

    They should just release a M11x-R3, M13x, M15x-R2, M17x-R3, M19x, M21x & M24x so people can then wonder why there is no M32x yet. :D ;)

Seriously though, I would like to see a number pad on the M15x line, full size keys on the M11x line, more color options & cosmetic options for the back of the screen that are similar to the pre-Dell skullcap & ripley.
