If their specs are right, you can now buy the M17x on Bestbuy.com for $325 cheaper than Dell.com.
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9383758&type=product&id=1218095797767 via a bestbuy post here, thx Nacr05.
$2099.99
Intel® Core™2 Quad processor Q9000
4GB DDR3 SDRAM
DVD±RW/CD-RW drive
17" WXGA+ widescreen display with 1440 x 900
500GB Serial ATA hard drive (7200 rpm)
Dual NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M graphics cards with SLI technology ????
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium Edition 64-bit operating system
If you are going for base SLI config M17x, this is a cheaper way to go IMO.
Here is the same config on Dell/Alienware:
**Edit: It seems either a deal or typo on the specs.**
SLI (Front Page)
vs
No SLI (Tech Specs)
But being Bestbuy and all, and the pricing i'm leaning towards the Single GPU.. Even with a single GPU, Q9000, 500gb HDD its cheaper than Dell's pricing. -
Stuff like this is why Circuit City went bankrupt and Best Buy is still hanging...
nice find btw! -
It was posted a while ago in another thread :/

Well this is good news, means I can go see one in person in a store.
Im ok with the ram/cpu but I would want the dual 280's and higher screen resolution though. -
I was thinking the same thing, but it seems available online only atm.

1920 and i would be happy

If you look under specs it says Single 260mGTX and even on the front page it says 1gb of video memory and we know they love to say it has double the amount even though we know its not usable . So this could be a single card machine in which case its not really a great deal.
-
It is a single 260 (see pic)
And it's not a good deal... I got mine for $2075.Attached Files:

i just noticed one more thing, it says Card's as in plural lol
and technically they are 2 single cards IE not 2 cards on one board
. Just havin some fun but there wording is all over the place , its making my head hurt .
-
There's now way that BB, of all places, is going to just cut $400 off the price (BB is the most expensive electronics retailer in the US).
Sorry, not buying it for one second...... -
The pricing is way more in line of a single card machine that is for certain. Only good thing to come of all this is if they ever carry them in actual stores then people can see one first hand . Bestbuy also carries quite a few items that never see the retail level so it may be a web only thing in which case there just being built to order from dell .
-
We can't be sure -
Post Updated,
Q9000, GTX260, 500gb HDD, 1440x900 = Dell:$2124 / Bestbuy:$2099 -

-
Lets face it though for that machine a Single 260mGTX is nothing to get excited about for 2k+ . Other machines that can only house one card is one thing but having this machine so stripped down does not sound like much fun

But at least the GPU's in the M17x are upgradeable though, so if you buy it with a single 260 you are not stuck with it. When the 4870's arrive or the GT300's the M17x will be upgradeable to those cards.

It is safe to say the MXM standards wont change for at least another 2 or 3 years, after all they just came out, and also type "b" is top of the line for MXM 3.0, so it should be fully compatible with all the big cards coming out over the next while (4870's GT300's etc).

Actually to be technical Brunoroc posted his Best Buy post at 1:11 PM my time, and Ripfire posted his at 1:17 my time, so technically Brunoroc DID post his first.
And I'm sure this laptop will be Best Buys best seller no doubt lol. I'm sure they will be all sold out by today, it just sucks they are not offering 1920x1200. -

Well, I've always been a paranoid one about upgrading video cards in laptops and with this model I have no worries at all about it, at the very least I'm sure I'll be able to get two 4870's in here and I would be very happy with that.

Back to best buy, any chance they will get some different configured models in? -

I'm actually kind of disappointed that Best Buy is selling the M17x, IMO it kind of cheapens it a little bit, if you know what I mean.
-
What's the difference?
I mean, anyone can order one from Dell.... -
i think its great more people = more support and help tweaking ... but the people who buy gaming laptops from best buy .... not USUALLY the smartest of the smart
-

The geek squad at best buy don't even know anything about computers half the time lol, but I guess I see what you mean by more support. BTW sleey0, did you send your M17x back?
-
I need my comp for school but still have my desktop to keep me occupied until then.
Honestly, I don't want to part with the M17x - it has been a blast to use. I guess since I wasn't waisting any money by returning it I think I should wait (ie they didn't charge a restock fee and ALL shipping is covered).
I dunno.... Just a gut feeling -
-
I am going to Florida for a month (July 8th) so I want to unplug as much as possible while I'm down there. Spending time with my family whom I don't see very often is what I really want to do so I figured, heh, why not wait another month.
I just want to wait a little bit longer to give myself a chance for 4870's.... -

Another watered down version of good notebook. Comparable to the G51, but with the quad and DDR3 memory. Dual 260M at the overview and then single 260m in the specs? Come on. 280M is so much better.

Nah you should keep it man, your next P8600 may not get up to 3.0ghz lol. I contemplated waiting for the M17x as well, and decided to just get it now and upgrade the cards later, you should be able to sell your GTX 260M's to a couple people looking for a second one for SLI at that time without problems, then you can use those funds to buy your dual 4870's from Dell. But then again maybe you should ship it back then you can order your next one with 1920x1200.
-
BB is where Joe Sixpack goes to shop and, unfortunately, would snap it up without even looking at the specs (just for looks - FTW)
-
GTX280M so much better?, whats your parameter to say this?.... c'mon.
-
-
I know - I have been following that thread since day 1.
For the money, I would rather put it towards newer(ish) technology. The G92 has been out for a LONG time and, while still great for gaming, is getting quite long in the tooth, so-to-speak.
Anyway, just a personal preference for ATI..... -

Alienware designed the M17x to be a good performing laptop even with the base config. Don't forget the GTX 260M is basically a 9800M GTX so it is a pretty ridiculous card, let alone having two of them or the upgraded GTX 280Ms. So yes, while the Best Buy version is not unlocking the full potential of the M17x, it will certainly be fast enough for just about whoever buys it. 4GB RAM, quad-core, GTX 260M . . . sounds pretty good to me. The only disappointment is the screen resolution, but then again we're talking about Best Buy here.
-
-
I think BB usually sells base model Dell notebooks (Studio XPS line comes to mind) right?
-
my question is, do you still get the dell/alienware support, or is your only option to but the geek squad warranty and hope they dont mess it up if it breaks.
-
Chaz you beat me
Besides you said it best.... the 260 gtx is no slouch it lays L4D maxed out and any other game out right now maybe it isn't 10% faster like the 280 but o well -
-
If it came with Wuxga it would be a great base model to start with thats for sure.
AW M17X on BB !!
