Hello all, I am an OTR commercial vehicle operater (truck driver) and I plan on buying a decent gaming laptop sometime in Feb. This lappy would be strictly for gaming, surfing web and email. I have my heart set on getting one of the AW lappies. My question is let say I get one at the base config.(due to cost) and I decide maybe 3 months from now (I mean from when I get it) I want to upgrade. Is the CPU, GPU and RAM all upgradable? Or would I have to buy a whole new system? Couple the games I plan on getting is Crysis, COD4 and COD waw. I also play a little WOW. I'm not too concerned with the portability issue due to the fact that I won't be lugging it around much accept taking it from my personal vehicle into my truck.

HDD and RAM are a piece of cake to upgrade, you don't even have to do it through AW. you can get the stuff from sites like newegg.com and install it yourself. that way, you'll save a truckload :)D) of money. the best you can upgrade to here are 8Gb of RAM and 500Gb hard drives.

as for the CPU and GPU, both are upgradable as well. however, if you don't go through AW for this, you will lose your warranty. right now, the highest upgrade possible are a Core 2 Duo CPU with 2.8Ghz, and the Nvidia 9800m-gt w/ 512mb respectively.

AW lets you choose screen, OS, RAM, HDD, GPU, and CPU. what more do you want to customize?

Well, my eyes were set on either the m15x or m17x but now the m17 came out and it is making my decision even harder. I like the price of the m17 but not sure if I want ATI gpu's. I really would like the sli technology if it is worth the extra dough if you know what I mean. I also see that the m17x has an option now for 256 gig solid state hd (128 x 2) which would be great too. I like the portabilty of the m15x (even though it doesn't really concern me) but compared to the m17 and m17x can it compete as far as performance. I would really like to be able to play high end games. Unable to play the newer titles on the crappy Compaq Presario 6410NX desktop that I have now.

I deleted many posts due to trolling. It's not going to be pleasant for the trolling members if I have to delete posts from them again in this forum.

Hoffa J - sorry for the inconvenience.

Well I thought part of my post was constructive but oh well. Anyways...

I would recommend the M15x if you want to go AW. You said you are a truck driver and having the battery life of the M15x with the smartbay would really be beneficial if you are going to be using it that way.

There shouldn't be anything to worry about with the M17. Xotic PC sells pretty much the same notebook minus the lid and the rubber coating so you can always look at them if you want. I think the M17 would be good as I have the M9750 and the build quality is really stable and the M17 is pretty much the same thing minus a few changes in the chassis.

Agree with Stone, Just can't top that smartbay, it's phenomenal, not sure if the m17x has Smart bay or not, but the portability is the number one reason I got the 15. Also the price of the 15 is cheaper than the 17x.

The m17 is probably the best bang for your buck, but that thing is enormous, I owned it for a few days, and it just didn't work for me.

EDIT* Hey Chaz, Sorry for aiding the trollers.

The m17x has Smart Bay as well, but it can only accommodate another hard drive and not another battery like the m15x. The reason is because power draw of the system is larger than what the SmartBay battery can provide.

You two ^ were not the trolls, don't worry.

Hoffa, are you planning on using the laptop when the vehicle is in motion, like for GPS tracking or something like that?
If you are, you should look into getting a SSD. I know how bumpy a ride in a truck can be. I have an older Pete, and the vibrations can kill a mechanical drive pretty quickly.
If your just using it to chill after a long run, than a standard mechanical drive is fine. (As long as the cab doesnt shake when the engine is idling) My Cat C15 loves to rock the cab at idle, which would eventually take a toll on the harddrive, so just be aware of the vibrations.
Otherwise your options are pretty upgradeable. usually the only hard think to upgrade is the graphics card, but everything else is pretty easy to upgrade.

No i don't plan on using it for GPS, just for on my 10 hr break or long waits at customers. I don't usually idle my truck very much to save on fuel for the company. Battery life doesn't concern me due to the fact I will probably have it plugged into a power inverter when I'm using it.
