Has anyone else got a crack like this:
http://www.mypeasinapod.com/m15x.html
I don't even know how it happened, It just appeared.
Would this be something covered under warranty?

Um, with all the issues the m15x has been having for others, call them up and get it fixed/replaced. Demand it since cracks are a common problem.

This is not a hinge crack, It is in an odd place, I was on the phone with AW for 2 hours and 41 minutes. First they said it was going to cost me 299 for shipping, but then the guy said he would cancel shipping charges after I told him just how many people were having problems with cracks.
-
that is NOT normal and that was caused by you or someone with your laptop
I HAVE SEEN NO CRAcKS like that since i have been on here.... -
Unless that laptop is even poorer quality than i thought it was, you couldn't have done that through 'normal use'
-
its not members here have owned theirs for a 8 months and have had no issues
-
while some owners have had viable complaints and issues, not everyone does.
i agree the m15x was not the best unit AW ever put forth, but mine has worked well and is of high gaming quality when i LAN it up or go to others houses to play MMO there.
to the OP: good to see you back steve....but i have never seen this issue before on the forums. this is new. -
aye i'm sure the large majority of the laptops are ok. I meant more that compared to the bad ones that have cracked this one doesn't look like it's the fault of the laptop
-
aha....ok understand the point you were making then....
-
You people would just blame the owner to not hurt the m15x's feelings. I think it could have been broken because of pressure... have you been lugging the laptop around?
-
it did not happen because the hinges in the m15x broke (which they didn't)
so obviously its the OP's fault whether he knows how he did it or not or what happened
EDIT WOW

Hey Ryu, Nice to see you still around, School has kept me away for the most part.
Really, I know nothing about how this crack got here, I also have had my laptop for 8 months, and this is the first crack I've seen. Except for the occasional rattling noise in the upper right hand corner by the 'delete' key, I have had 0 problems. They are sending me a new fan for that though.
What I think might be, is that, it is right above the gpu, perhaps excessive heat over time has wore it thin, cause the slightest bit of pressure to crack it. (tech support ran a gpu stress test, and the temp got up to 94 degrees Celsius) I have never dropped it, and am ALWAYS careful with it. I paid a lot of money for this, and I give it the respect it deserves.
That is the only thing I can think of, one hour it wasnt there, the next hour it was. -
damn gnomes ...
(sorry ryujin)
-
did the crack appear after or before they did the stress test then?
i am a bit confused as to the time frame here.
but keep us updated as a "just in case" for others if they get the same crack so we can see how your delima played out and was dealt with.
GL steve.
Moo: lol no worries... -

No the crack happened first, I was just saying that I thought a 94 temp was high, and if it gets that high often, it possibly could of been wearing away at the plastic.
-
yeah 94 is a bit high...(at least to me)
do you happen to use a cooler? -
Considering your GPU got that hot, I think it would make sense that it could have caused the plastic to deteriorate and eventually crack. Especially if the heatsink is right under that area.

people, don't forget, it is a plastic part and this happens.....
The polycarbonate (read: plastic) macbooks were plagued by this (I think that is part of why they are ALL unibody aluminum now) -
There could have been a crack in the chassis all along but on the underside of the palmrest and when running from hot to cold over a period of time it just eventually split . That could happen in anything quite frankly and we all know the plastic they used in the M15x was not exactly grade A material.
I spoke with the tech the other night and we got to talking about all the machines alienware has had issues with and of course the M15x came up . He told me they get calls every single day for broken hinges and not just one but multiple . So im not surprised in the least bit to see it crack like that . Might be out of the norm from the hinge crack issue but im not surprised.
I also vaguely remember people having cracks around the Network jack port ? . i dont think these issues are all from being careless like so many have stated in the past . Many people spend good money on these machines and pamper them to death and they still broke. -

Don't get me wrong, this is a great laptop, I have no regrets getting it, and I would get it again. It's just strange that it cracked there without any explanation.
Regardless AW is working it out with me, and the most it will cost me to get it fixed is about $100, so I wont complain.
AW m15x crack by keyboard :(
