    AW m17x or other?

    Hello everyone.

This is my first thread on NBR so be gentle. :)

Anyways, assume money is not an issue up to somewhere around 7-8k. With all the assumptions and speculations in mind involving supposed deals made with Dell and the stalling of release what should I go for?

I really would like an Alienware now that I have the money for it, but I am also impatient. On the other hand I have attention deficit disorder so the shiny sexy chassis of the AW m17x would put a big smile on my face.

I have read through a moderate amount of threads in the past month and as time goes by I am only getting less enthusiastic about waiting for the m17x since I do not even know if it will be released at all (would suck waiting for something that might never come out). So I would love to hear opinions of the members here about what I should do.

Hold out for the Alienware m17x with full options, or go with another manufacturer?

Thanks for everyone's input in advance.

The M17x is the best 17" notebook ever in my mind. If you have the patience to wait for it, then do it.

Thing is I can be patient if I have to, but we don't even know at this point if the m17x will ever be released.

As far as Voodoo goes. I haven't heard anything about them since their graphics cards were the s***. So I will look into that, but if I see the majority of people here saying wait for the m17x I will probably do that.

EDIT: As far as what I will be doing with the laptop...well...

I play a lot of games and my work involved the computer but nothing a cheap computer could not handle. As far as the gaming goes... I play more games than most professional gamers so assume that I will want the best possible specs on my computer.

Just started looking at Voodoo and I don't think I am going to go that way. They overprice a lot of their things. I might have a lot of money, but I did not get it by spending too much on things that are not worth it. Just the paint on it varies from $673.60-1077.75 CDN (which is worth more than USD). Ridiculous.

Yeah, voodoo isn't good. Last time I checked they weren't even offering the 8800 yet they were still charging an arm and a leg. If you need a laptop now, get the m1730 from dell. The specs are the same as Alienware. If you want the best looking 17 inch laptop, wait for the Alienware. That's pretty much what it boils down to...

I heard some bad things about the dell about how they skimp on the buying of their parts, and also about how hot the laptop itself gets. Not to mention how big it is. I might as well try to carry a desktop, monitor, mouse, keyboard, and a generator around mirite? :)

If you want THE BEST NOTEBOOK in the world, the Sager 9262 is actually the best one:
    -Quad Core CPU
    -SLI 8800M GTX
    -3 Hard drives
    -Awesome price

Voodoo doesn't overcharge. 1k for premium auto paint that is painted by 20 years of service is not overcharging. If you get a voodoo, there is nothing else quite like it. It will turn heads, and you will know you are getting premium quality at a good value when you order it.

No offense, but I do not want to "turn heads" with a laptop. Paying the amount of a base M9750 for a paint job is ridiculous. Like I said no offense. These are just opinions. I love you and I'm sure you love me back. No hating please :)

Anyways. I took a look at Sager and like what I see. Other than the shiny exterior of the Alienware I think I might be ok with the Sager NP9262 if the m17x is not released before so and so date (not sure when my head will essplode waiting).

Thanks for the input so far.

Man, the 9262 is the fastest around. Either way if I were you I'd wait and buy the M17x. It has a great look and it's quite light for a 17".

    Heh.

    1) An m17x, weighing in at about 8.5 pounds (according to the webby) is gonna weigh far less than any full desktop set with equal performance. If you want a powerful, yet mobile platform, a 17" is the way to go, no?

    2) Hot? Which laptop? The m15x does tend to overheat, yes... but that's in a 15" form factor. The 17" -should- run a little cooler, though I'm not sure about what'd happen with SLI 8800M GTXes.

Voodoo is a horrible PC company. They overcharge for everything and they don't even have the top of the line stuff. Really DO NOT buy from VoodooPC whatever you do.

Either go for. (In terms of how good they look in my opinion)
    a. Alienware M17x
    b. Falcon Northwest (they have top notch tech support if that is important to you. They don't have the 8800GTX yet though)
    c. Dell XPS M1730
    d. Clevo/Sager

Thanks Raziel I am looking forward to your review.

As far as AW m15x overheating, I did not imply that it got too hot. I was saying that I read that the Dell gets unusually hot.

As far as mobility I'm not picky about small things like weight. I'm a big boy I can carry a heavy laptop around.

As far as Northwest goes, I definitely want a minimum of one 8800. Might go for two who knows. Plus I am pretty good at figuring things out for myself so tech support hasn't really been needed for me.

I am looking forward to Raziel's Dell review, because as of now if I wake up and decide not to wait anymore for the m17x I'm going to go with Sager. It all depends on when that happens. :)

I recently called AW and asked about the m17x. I was told it would be released in Q2 around April or May and feature 8800s in SLI.

ahhh. well, the price should be all you have to endure to get the best when it comes to laptops. One should not have to endure corporate secrecy and ad campaigns to drum up business when theres no business to be done. The laptop marked moves too fast for this kind of waiting. You cant call something "the first blah blah", the "most state of the art blah blah", etc in the laptop world if it actually doesnt hit peoples hands till 6 months or more later.

I could see if in November, it was an announcement about something "currently in development" with some teaser photos and drawings and such, but were there not working computers at that event?

If I were the other companies, Id be pushing to get as close to the release of the m17 as possible with new machines. Cause other companies could definately take business away from AW after all this frustration in the waiting game and the m15x dissapointments people are having.

the minute HP releases the HDX with the 8800mGTX or sager comes out with a 20.1in with similar specs...im gettin that instead, unless alienware releases their m17x real soon. Heck, i'd be okay with the 8800mGTS for the HDX.....assassin's creed on 20.1in...max...drooool

    Hi guys,

I'd need your opinion about that:

As the m17x won't ever get released (if it will, it's not gonna be before 2months), and it won't be equipped of the new peryen processors, what's the difference (expect the case) beetween the m17x and the xps m1730. Which has the 8800GTX SLi, The 2.8 proc (which says "overclockable to 3.2", the blue ray drives, the 17" screen....

I actually got my laptop stolen and i'm looking for a new one, i got enough money for a good one, so the question is :

Is it worth waiting 2 months without laptop to get a alien_head on the top of my new laptop ? Or are they other specs that i should know about ?

    however, isn't that a "small" detail ?

I'm almost done choosing beetween waiting 2 month without a laptop and getting a penryen processors, or not waiting, and getting the exact same thing, without it.

I was just waiting for some opinions =]
