So far no complaints, I'm not a huge guy (just around 135lbs) but carry it in my backpack every day to and from work ( 1 hr of walking time in every direction).
But the cooler won't fit the backpack with all the paperwork there. So this is frustrating...![]()

Dude, it's time to give up on the AW and get a G73.
I'll be watching closely what Asus do with the 15" or 16" chassis. If they deliver a G73 like revision of their smaller chassis I'll bite. -
Even within the thermal budget of their current D900F you can fit 5870X2 + some 90W CPU.
-
You have too much money.
-
-
I'm just too excited to have a Clevo system.

Plastic, WLED w/poor angles, keyboard lag issues (since the G50), and hot running GPU? No thanks. Have fun with your Asus, you'll come running back after you experience the "joy" of Asus for a few weeks.
It runs hot but it doesn't affect day to day use. The problem is that the AW overvolt option is useless due to the heat generated and a lack of TDP limit remover. Not that a 920xm really needs much overclocking, it's fast enough as it is. It would be nice to have it for some e-peen contests but whatever as long as my games work that's all I care about. For gaming the most important component is to have a cool running GPU and that's where AW does very well. OC'ing the GPU is usually needed for additional gaming performance and I wouldn't want that vital component running hot like it does in the G73 because then you end up with less OC overhead. I bet Clevo and AW users will get better OC results than the G73 has been getting. -

With the system sitting on a targus chillpad (light weight and comfortable to use on your lap) with no active cooling from the pad itself, the idles are in the mid 40s. During games it reaches about 75C at stock clocks. With 5% OC it hits about 78-80C. -
So please keep your opinions as opinions -
Edit: Never mind the answer is yes. I can see it in the benchmark snap-shots. -
Im sorry to interrupt you, but the M17x is one of the greatest laptops of all time.
-
Good for you. My opinions ARE opinions (based on previous Asus experience) except for the fact that the G73 does have a hot running GPU, keyboard lag, WLED w/poorer viewing angles (according to drake) and is plastic. Besides, my dislike for Asus isn't something I hide. AW has it's flaws but I'll take those (and Clevo) over Asus anytime. Enjoy your rubbery toy -
I'd buy the Clevo W870CU right now if it didn't have it's own power issues. -
Any rumors of new systems that will be present at the upcoming CeBit?
We need some revolution here... -
Soviet Sunrise got around the power issue by picking up a 160W adapter with some minor soldering. Don't know if you'd want to go that route but he seems happy based on my convos w/him over steam. -
I have none of those issues except my GPU ran hot...
But it died :/ So i RMA'd it -

And the screen on the G73 is fantastic so not sure what the dislike is there. -
its not RGB once you go RGB you never go back!!!

I'm just trying to get some perspective of which laptops are actually working property in relation to their "all powerful-ness".
Joker, if money was no option you would go a M17x-R2 hands down?
I've also noticed you've received the bios patch that fixes your AW 100% (or 99%). -
-
I know you aren't the only one, but I still think it is isolated.
Meh. I am just happy I got one RIGHT when newegg sold out. So Wednesday it is -
-
Of course I'd go for the R2 and I did. There's nothing else on the market I'd choose over it. My second choice (if I had to make one) would be the Sager 8760 or Precision M6500 (more likely the precision). -
-
It's been an Asus issue for a long time. I had it bad with my G51 while others said it wasn't as bad for them. I read up on the workarounds and one was to disable the trackpad and remove the synaptic driver. It worked to an extent but it still wasn't satisfactory. It seems you are having the same problem now. -
Why not get the M11x and the Asus for the price of the M17x
-
Because then you'd be stuck with a psuedo netbook and a cheap plastic/rubbery Asus. -
-
I talked to another tech who has bought Asus systems in the past and he told me the same. It's a common Asus issue. I can try calling Asus and see if they would agree to send me a new keyboard but who knows if they will do it or if it would help. -
Long time lurker, first time poster, etc, etc
Been trying to make this decision myself. One thing I have searched for, but can't seem to find a good answer for regards the heat and fan noise of the m17x-r2. Joker I noticed you mentioned a cooler for using the m17x on your lap. Is that a good to have or must have when using this laptop?
I have also seen that someone said the m17x was loud when under load. How loud? I had a m1730 with 8800gtx sli which died, how does it compare to one of those? For that matter how does the heat compare to one of those?
Build quality is important to me, but I game sitting on the lounge so I can pretend I am spending time with the wife... so I need something that can be used on the lap and won't be annoyingly loud.
-
The M17x CPU fan gets quite loud under load. The GPU fans not so much because they 4870s run cool for the most part. The system needs a bigger copper sink for the CPU but the way it's designed (CPU top side) there's very little space to work with.
-
I assume with a i7 720, the cpu fan would not have to do as much work? And so would be quieter?

It must be quite the hoover if that's the case....
