was doing a config for shytes and giggles and noticed that AW now has 128G ssd as an available option for the drive.
question: i saw that vista requires 15G of space...is this for sure the amount it uses? can anyone validate this?
question: with the smart bay - will the read/write suffer as compared to internal hdd?
and still no black color option...lol

read/write will definitely suffer. we've discussed this before...

lol
i mean the hdd in the smartbay for this one whizzo....my bad - i should have stated better.
i know the ssd will suffer, but if the 128ssd stays internal, i was wondering abou the hdd read/write compared to internal. -
oh, right. well, i don't think you'd get much speed loss, because the HDD's much slower than the SSD. if it'll be a storage drive, it'll probably be a 5400 rpm drive, so it'll be even slower. i don't think you'll notice any speed difference.
-
ok - thx
now a bizarre question....
as far as applications....so as to not take up all the space on the ssd....what programs would you reccomend/need to be on the ssd?
(i.e. virus killers, firewall, as examples)
and which can be on the smartbay drive...
(i.e. itunes, etc...)
does this question even make sense? -
OS, games, programs on SSD.
music, movies, data on HDD.
i think that's how most people do it. -
then 128 seems a bit small - lol
but i do not cram my drive full of junk either... -
I could get by with 128. Once prices have dropped a bit more (I'll give it 3 more years) I will definetly pick up an SSD drive.

Somebody has expierence with this,
2 x non Raid 128GB SSD + 1 Normal HD as smartbay
or 2 x Raid 0 Normal HD + 1 Normal HD as smartbay
i am trying to figure out if SSD non Raid can be faster as Raid 0 with normal disks -
well, SSD's still have some shortcomings. beyond the exorbitant prices, the often-cited read/write speeds drop dramatically for larger files (>1Gb), and, most importantly, they lost a lot less longer than comparable HDD's.

How long do SDD last ?.... average...
-
O.K. everyone looking at the spec's of SSD's without firsthand knowledge continue to perpetuate false conclusions.
I work for the Dept. of Defence and am familiar with SSD's. Myself as well as many associates have been using them in the field for several years.
I have yet to see a single read or write failure due to the "much talked about" limited write cycles.
I would suggest that you never defrag an SSD.
In my own private laptop (M9750) I have installed two OCZ SSD's in raid 0 and I would never even consider using anything other than SSD's.
Often when you have a high end laptop it's difficult to make an upgrade that makes a very noticable difference, however this is not the case with SSD's.
Less heat, less power consumption, less weight, and a very noticable difference in overall speed.
Yes they do cost more but you get what you pay for.
I think this is one of those times where once you go SSD.................you never go back to mechanical failure prone platters again.
Again, take into consideration what people who actually use them every day and have firsthand knowledge of them have to say. You'll be glad you did.
Rob
It was stated that SSD's don't last nearly as long as platter drives. Could someone please verify this with firsthand knowledge?

problem is they're bloody expensive. the cost/capacity ratio is nowhere near reasonable.

They are expensive but if you can afford them you'll love them

i am thinking about getting 2 SDD from 128GB, but it's a little short on GB for me -
Hey vitotherm,
I would get two of the largest SSD's you can afford so you can have them in raid 0. With SSD's you aren't doubling the chance of failure like with conventional drives and raid 0 with SSD's fly!
I am not qualified to give advise about the smart bay drive but it sounds good.
I use a large external for mass storage and all my frequently used stuff on my SSD's.
I actually got two external drive enclosures for the two 100 Gig hard drives I took out when I installed the SSD's.
You will be VERY happy with SSD's.

Best idea is do some research on SSD drives. Just type in SSD Failure rate. Dell seems to have it hands Full right now. Not sure if it Ture It just Funny.
I will wait a year or more when they are 200gb or higher. -
ok rob - why would you never want to defrag the ssd?
seems like read would suffer if you did not? -
See hard disk have Disk that spin fast. And Write to any part of the disk to make them faster for download info.. SSD is a type of memory chips. So the software is put where it needs to be. So you dont need to defrag.

aha....kind of like always parking a car in the same garage then.
makes sense... -

Along with the mentioned less heat, less vibrations and no moving parts, this thing makes ZERO noise. None of that clunky access sounds we all got used to anymore, dead silence and sometimes I cant even tell if the computer is on or not!
Another confusion people have is that SSDs dont last as long as normal HDs...
well if you think that over 100 years is not enough, then yes it doesnt last very long, current SSDs last approx 140 Years at 5GB per day!!!
What people DO NOT realize is that the BRAND of the SSD do matter so make sure you get a good and reliable brand as performance does indeed vary between them.
Yes $/GB ratio is crap but I will never return to normal HD ever again.

Unless you need a lot of space like me
-
NAND flash has a typical memory retention of 100 years (20 years at elevated or max. temperature) and 100,000 erase/write cycles for high quality flash.
Seems to me that this would outlast any mechanical HDD out there. -
so can anyone find out the specs on the one AW is offering in its units right now?
-
i can not....and not sure how to locate this... -
Vista Home Premium... approx 16GB
Vista Enterprise... approx 18GB
Vista Ultimate... approx 22GB
I am including the pagefile.sys (default equivalent to your RAM size or your configured page file size) -
"We use SSD manufactured by Samsung or SanDisk. Which one you will receive depends on the item availability." -
I ordered an m15x a week ago yesterday with the 64gb ssd and the 120gb smartbay... I just emailed them saying I wanted to switch to a 128gb ssd setup instead. According to the status page they are still gathering the pieces to build the laptop, so hopefully theyll be able to switch and not delay it. You guys think it will delay the finish date? Think they'll let me switch? It would cost them $150.

now i wonder if it is single write/read location or multiple....
i read something about this and promtly forgot what it was...lol
AW now has 128G ssd option...
